In this PhD thesis, new imaging techniques have been developed in order to explore the physics of semiconductor microcavities. In these structures, composite bosons called exciton polaritons are the result of strong coupling between the cavity mode and qua ...

We optically excited the eigenmodes of an elliptic resonator in a semiconductor microcavity. Using a pulsed excitation, we created a superposition of eigenmodes, and imaged the temporal evolution of the coherent emission pattern. A semiconductor quantum we ...

We experimentally investigate the relaxation of spatially confined microcavity polaritons. We measure the time- and energy-resolved photoluminescence under resonant excitation and in the low-density regime. In this way, we have access to the time evolution ...

We image the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons in gold and silver thin films of 30 and 50 nm thickness, using angle-resolved white light spectroscopy in the Kretschmann geometry. Calibrated dispersion curves are obtained over a wavelength range span ...

We present the optical tomography of the probability density of microcavity polaritons, confined in three dimensions by cylindrical traps of various sizes. Collecting the photoluminescence emitted by the quasimodes under continuous nonresonant laser excita ...

Control of the wave function of confined microcavity polaritons is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically by means of tailored resonant optical excitation. Three dimensional confinement is achieved by etching mesas on top of the microcavity spacer l ...

We resonantly excite exciton-polariton states confined in cylindrical traps. Using a homodyne detection setup, we are able to image the phase and amplitude of the confined polariton states. We evidence the excitation of vortex states, carrying an integer a ...

We study the emission properties of confined polariton states in shallow zero-dimensional traps under nonresonant excitation. We evidence several relaxation regimes. For slightly negative photon-exciton detuning, we observe a nonlinear increase of the emis ...

We study the wave functions of exciton polaritons trapped in the elliptical traps of a patterned microcavity. A homodyne detection setup with numerical off-axis filtering allows us to retrieve the amplitude and the phase of the wave functions. Doublet stat ...

We present a novel semiconductor structure in which 0D polaritons coexist with 2D microcavity polaritons. Spatial trapping of the 2D microcavity polaritons results from the confinement of their photonic part in a potential well, consisting of an adjustable ...

We study an asymmetric double InGaAs quantum well using optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. The collection of zero-quantum, one-quantum, and two-quantum two-dimensional spectra provides a unique and comprehensive picture of the double well coher ...

Exciton polaritons have been shown to be an optimal system in order to investigate the properties of bosonic quantum fluids. We report here on the observation of dark solitons in the wake of engineered circular obstacles and their decay into streets of qua ...

Multidimensional coherent optical spectroscopy (MDCS) is an elegant and versatile tool to measure the ultrafast nonlinear optical response of materials. Of particular interest for semiconductor nanostructures, MDCS enables the separation of homogeneous and ...

The influence of magnetic field on confined exciton-polariton modes inside a semiconductor microcavity is discussed. The three-dimensional confinement for exciton-polaritons is achieved by the mesa structures confining the photonic part of polaritons. We o ...

We present the optical tomography of the probability density of quasiparticles, the microcavity polaritons, confined in three dimensions by cylindrical traps. Collecting the photoluminescence emitted by the quasimodes under continuous nonresonant laser exc ...

We report on time-resolved measurements of the first order spatial coherence in an exciton-polariton Bose-Einstein condensate. Long-range spatial coherence is found to set in right at the onset of stimulated scattering, on a picosecond time scale. The cohe ...

We demonstrate the potential of spatial light modulators for the spectral control of a broadband source in digital holographic microscopy. Used in a ‘pulse-shaping’ geometry, the spatial light modulator provides a versatile control over the bandwidth and w ...

We performed studies on microcavity polaritons trapped along the three dimensions of space, under resonant excitation on a confined lower polariton state. We observed various nonlinear behaviors as a function of the pump power, without any apparent loss of ...
