Surgical treatment of tumors, epileptic foci or of vascular origin, requires a detailed individual pre-surgical workup and intra-operative surveillance of brain functions to minimize the risk of post-surgical neurological deficits and decline of quality of ...

Virtual reality (VR) technology had its earliest developments in the 1970s in the U.S. Air Force and has since evolved into a budding area of scientific research with many practical medical purposes. VR shows a high potential to benefit to learners and tra ...

Adopting the perspective of another person is an important aspect of social cognition and has been shown to depend on multisensory signals from one's own body. Recent work suggests that interoceptive signals not only contribute to own-body perception and s ...

We tested whether an experimentally induced change in the experienced location of the self by means of the Full Body Illusion (FBI) would impact high-level cognitive processing. In an implicit association task, participants saw a landscape where words, con ...

This thesis presents researches and experiments performed in collaboration with a psychiatrist in order to validate and improve the use of virtual reality in social phobia psychotherapy. Cognitive and behavioral therapies are strongly based on the exposure ...

The subjective experience of embodying an avatar when immersed in virtual reality (VR) is known to support the sense of presence and to help with the interaction in a virtual environment. Virtual embodiment is often thought of as the consequence of replace ...

Interactions between individuals and the environment occur within the peri-personal space (PPS). The encoding of this space plastically adapts to bodily constraints and stimuli features. However, these remapping effects have not been demonstrated on an ada ...

When performed at a high level, meditation and contemplative practices can give rise to altered states of consciousness, the study of which is key for cognitive neurosciences. Those effects indeed can help to better understand the underlying mechanisms of ...

Bodily self-consciousness depends on the processing of interoceptive and exteroceptive signals. It can be disrupted by inducing signal conflicts. Breathing, at the crossroad between interoception and exteroception, should contribute to bodily self-consciou ...

In immersive Virtual Reality (VR), users can experience the subjective feeling of embodiment for the avatar representing them in a virtual world. This is known to be strongly supported by a high Sense of Agency (SoA) for the movements of the avatar that fo ...

Functional magnetic resonance Brain Imaging (fMRI) is a key non-invasive imaging technique for the study of human brain activity. Its millimetric spatial resolution is at the cost of several constraints: participants must remain static and experience artif ...

Episodic memory (EM) allows us to remember and relive past events and experiences and has been linked to cortical-hippocampal reinstatement of encoding activity. While EM is fundamental to establish a sense of self across time, this claim and its link to t ...

Recent evidence suggests that multisensory integration of bodily signals involving exteroceptive or interoceptive information modulates bodily aspects of self-consciousness such as self-identification and self-location. In the so-called full body illusion ...

Vestibular signals are strongly integrated with information from several other sensory modalities. For example, vestibular stimulation was reported to improve tactile detection. However, this improvement could reflect either a multimodal interaction or an ...

In the context of cognitive and behavioural therapies, the use of immersion technologies to replace classical exposure often improves the therapeutic process. As it is necessary to validate the efficiency of such a technique, both therapists and VR special ...

Heterotopagnosia-without-Autotopagnosia (HwA) is characterized by the incapacity to point to body parts on others, but not on one's own body. This has been classically interpreted as related to a self-other distinction, with impaired visual representations ...

Background Immersive virtual reality (iVR)-based digital therapeutics are gaining clinical attention in the field of pain management. Based on known analogies between pain and dyspnoea, we investigated the effects of visual respiratory feedback on persiste ...

Hands deserve particular attention in virtual reality (VR) applications because they represent our primary means for interacting with the environment. Although marker-based motion capture works adequately for full body tracking, it is less reliable for sma ...

The ability to build and control exposure through a seamless synergy of interaction and narration is a strongly required feature of a new type of immersive-VR training and therapy system. This paper presents a practical approach for immersive-VR training a ...

Episodic memory (EM) is classically conceived as a memory for events, localized in space and time, and characterized by autonoetic consciousness (ANC) allowing to mentally travel back in time and subjectively relive an event. Building on recent evidence th ...
