Cemented carbides are hard materials used for the fabrication of cutting tools. They consist of hard micron or sub-micron carbide grains held together in a matrix of a tough metallic binder such as cobalt. The understanding and control of cobalt characteri ...

Chemical reactions and phase transformations in nanometer-size objects may happen at very short timescales, so conventional characterization tools are not applicable. A new technique combining high spatial and temporal resolution is ultrafast (or dynamic) ...

In situ investigations of rapid solidification in polycrystalline Al thin films were conducted using nano-scale spatio-temporal resolution dynamic transmission electron microscopy. Differences in crystal growth rates and asymmetries in melt pool developmen ...

The discovery of a novel long-lived metastable skyrmion phase in the multiferroic insulator Cu2OSeO3 visualized with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy for magnetic fields below the equilibrium skyrmion pocket is reported. This phase can be accessed ...

Semiconductors made of earth-abundant elements, such as zinc phosphide, have the potential to substitute less abundant, highly functional compound semiconductors such as InAs or InP. Compound semiconductors in the form of nanowires could revolutionise appl ...

Irradiation-induced transformations in sputter-deposited Ti-rich NiTi thin films have been investigated with special attention given to the effects of prior deformation on the response of martensite phase. Irradiation at low fluence was carried out at room ...

This review article discusses the current and future possibilities for the application of in situ transmission electron microscopy to reveal synthesis pathways and functional mechanisms in complex and nanoscale materials. The findings of a group of scienti ...

The present invention concerns an energy dispersion calibration method for calibrating an electron spectrometer of an electron spectrometer system including at least one electron emission source, electron optics and the electron spectrometer. The method co ...

Topological spin textures such as skyrmions hold high potential for use as magnetically active elements in diverse near-future applications. While skyrmions in metallic multilayers attract great attention in this context, unleashing the myriad potential of ...

Sputter deposited Al(1-x)ScxN thin films with a Sc content from x = 0 to 43 at% are investigated by electron microscopy in order to study and explain the formation and growth of abnormally oriented grains (AOG). It is found that the latter did not nucleate ...

We establish a frequency link across the microwave, optical, and free-electron domains by a photonic chip-based electron phase modulator driven by a continuous-wave laser locked to a fully stabilized optical frequency comb. ...

We show how the kinetics of a fast and irreversible chemical reaction in a nanocrystalline material at high temperature can be studied using nanosecond electron pulses in an electron microscope. Infrared laser pulses first heat a nanocrystalline oxide laye ...

The employment of 2D perovskites is a promising approach to tackling the stability and voltage issues inherent in perovskite solar cells. It remains unclear, however, whether other perovskites with different dimensionalities have the same effect on efficie ...

Phase transitions occurring in nonequilibrium conditions can evolve through high-energy intermediate states inaccessible via equilibrium adiabatic conditions. Because of the subtle nature of such hidden phases, their direct observation is extremely challen ...

The raw data used in the publication of MBE grown Zinc Phosphide nanowires. ...

The sign reversal in the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that occurs for material offers great prospects for AHE-based spintronic devices design. However, the mechanisms are still controversial in ultrathin ferromagnetic/heavy metal thin film systems due to th ...

The time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) allows for direct mapping of the electronic band structure and its dynamic response on femtosecond timescales. Here, we present a new ARPES system, powered by a new fiber-based femtosecond l ...
