The conventional configuration of a pulp mill, in which black liquor is concentrated and burnt, is compared to the upgrading gasification routes for methanol (MeOH) or dimethyl ether (DME) co-production. To this end, various exergy-based and environmental ...

The large potential for waste resource and heat recovery in industry has been motivating research toward increasing efficiency. Process integration methods have proven to be effective tools in improving industrial sites while decreasing their resource and ...

The transition towards more sustainable, fossil-free energy systems is interlinked with a high penetration of stochastic renewables, such as wind and solar. In this context, energy storage technologies of different kinds - namely electrical, thermal and ch ...

For efficient feedstock and energy utilization, integrated biorefinery processes are applied to furfural production from bagasse to convert furfural residue into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)-an important intermediate building block for the production of v ...

The planning of national power systems is traditionally based on long-term forecasts of electricity demand and fuel prices. However, over such long time horizons (20-50 years), these forecasts often prove to be inaccurate. As an example, wrong projections ...

The increasing demand for heat, electricity, fuels and chemicals is pushing natural resources towards a non-reversible situation. Current solutions have to be adapted, and alternative (desirably sustainable) sources have to be found. With growth assured du ...

The process synthesis and optimization methods used in this work include simulation of biomass gasification, hydrogen and synthetic natural gas production, and jet fuel production via a Fisher Tropsch unit. An energy integration approach, carried out by th ...

An optimal planning method is proposed for the renewal planning problem of an energy supply system installed into building from economic viewpoint. In this method, the objective function to be minimized is the average annual total cost during the evaluatio ...

District Energy Systems (DES) have been widely recognized as crucial components for successful national energy transitions towards meeting 2050 greenhouse gas emissions' reduction targets. While District Heating Network (DHN) still has a role to play in th ...

The objective of the current work is to support the design of a pilot hydrogen and electricity producing plant that uses natural gas (or biomethane) as raw material, as a transition option towards a 100% renewable transportation system. The plant, with a s ...

The cities in which we live are constantly evolving. The active management of this evolution is referred to as urban planning. The according development process could go in many directions resulting in a large number of potential future scenarios of a city ...

In the context of greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, CO2 capture and storage is regarded as a promising alternative for fossil fuel fed power plants. In order to design and evaluate the competitiveness of such complex integrated energy conversion systems ...

Imbalance costs caused by forecasting errors are considerable for grid-connected wind farms. In order to reduce such costs, two onsite storage technologies, i.e., power-to-hydrogen-to-power and lithium battery, are investigated considering 14 uncertain tec ...

A new procedure for benchmarking analysis has been developed to evaluate the energy efficiency of a chemical process. Benchmarking is performed to identify process inefficiencies before developing energy enhancement measures. The new procedure combines typ ...

The task of optimally designing and scheduling energy systems with a high share of renewable energies is complex and computationally demanding. A widespread method for tackling this task is to apply mixed integer linear programming (MILP). Even though the ...

The industrial sector has a large presence in world energy consumption and CO2 emissions, which has made it one of the focal points for energy and resource efficiency studies. However, large investments are required to retrofit existing industrial plants, ...

Extending the idea of exergy to practitioners and policy makers is still a major challenge. Recently the "Canton of Geneva" in Switzerland introduced a new law governing the procedures of attribution of building permits for new or retrofitted city areas. A ...

The offshore extraction of oil and gas is an energy-intensive process leading to the production of CO2 and methane, discharged into the atmosphere, and of chemicals, rejected into the sea. The taxation of these emissions, in Norway, has encouraged the deve ...

Biogas upgrading technologies are crucial for the production of high-purity biomethane. Efficient CO2 removal methods that are currently commercialized rely on "catch-and-release" mechanisms, and the CO2 stream is usually discharged into the atmosphere wit ...

When it comes to residential buildings, there are several stochastic parameters, such as renewable energy production, outdoor air conditions, and occupants’ behavior, that are hard to model and predict accurately, with some being unique in each specific bu ...
