Solid-oxide electrolyzer (SOE) based power-to-methane (PtM) system can efficiently store surplus renewable power into synthesis natural gas by electrolysis and methanation. The system performance depends on the operating point of the electrolyzer and syste ...

The use of renewable energy sources has been promoted with concern about limited fossil fuels and increased environmental impact. Empty fruit bunch (EFB), which is a valuable biomass residual from palm oil milling processes, is one of the most promising re ...

This research presents a mathematical formulation for optimizing integration of complex industrial systems from the level of unit operations to processes, entire plants, and finally to considering industrial symbiosis opportunities between plants. The fram ...

With the increasing trend of mobility of the human population, vehicles have to face the problem of primary energy resources scarcity. The vehicles need higher efficiency and better adaptation to the alternative energy sources. The need to improve the effi ...

(Formula presented.) emission reduction of sectors such as aviation, maritime shipping, road haulage, and chemical production is challenging but necessary. Although these sectors will most likely continue to rely on carbonaceous energy carriers, they are e ...

Modern ammonia production plants are equipped with efficient energy integration networks able to recover an important fraction of the enthalpy of reaction released by the exothermic chemical systems. However, to fully supply the exergy demands of the highl ...

This study presents a thermoeconomic and environmental assessment of the extraction of lipids and proteins from wet microalgal biomass in a 3G biorefinery by two different technologies: supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and low-pressure solvent extracti ...

Power-to-fuel systems via solid-oxide electrolysis are promising for storing excess renewable electricity by efficient electrolysis of steam (or co-electrolysis of steam and CO2) into hydrogen (or syngas), which can be further converted into synthetic fuel ...

In this study, the performance of high-purity hydrogen production through the sorption-enhanced chemical looping gasification (SECLG) process, involving a gasifier, calciner, and air reactor, was investigated. In this process, the biomass feedstock was woo ...

The concept of urban CO2 networks has been developed to deploy heat pump based district heating and cooling systems in dense urban areas. The use of the CO2 phase change reduces the cost of the heat distribution while allowing to recover waste heat that is ...

A detailed thermo-economic model combining thermodynamics with economic analysis and considering different technological alternatives for the thermochemical production of liquid fuels from lignocellulosic biomass is presented. Energetic and economic models ...

As one of the largest industrial emitters, today's refineries must take action to reduce emissions in response to global climate change and net -zero targets. However, the decarbonization of refineries is complex due to the diverse range of processes invol ...

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) have developed to a mature technology, able to achieve electrical efficiencies beyond 60%. This makes them particularly suitable for off-grid applications, where SOFCs can supply both electricity and heat at high efficiency. C ...

Biorefineries hold the potential to provide products and energy carriers at reduced environmental impact compared to their fossil-based counterparts. Thus, they can contribute to the decarbonization of sectors in which electrification of demands is challen ...

Endogenous and exogenous uncertainties exert significant influences on energy planning. In this study, we propose a systematic methodology to excavate the uncertainty space, by combining mix-integer linear programming (MILP), Monte Carlo simulation, and ma ...

Governments are setting ambitious targets to tackle the issue of global warming by switching to renewable energy sources and reducing CO2 -emissions. For example, as announced in November 2020, Canada aims to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. Large c ...

Electricity production and consumption must be balanced for the electrical grid. However, the rapidly growing intermittent power sources are now challenging the supply-demand balance, leading to large flexibility needs for grid management. The plant integr ...

Industrial plant data are difficult to find in academic literature for a number of reasons such as confidentiality, and thus intentional masking, or problem size reduction. These common practices limit the ability of researchers to apply novel methods to r ...

Energy needs in urban areas are heterogeneous by their nature, spatial distribution and temperature level required. Three concepts of district energy networks that could provide the energy services efficiently to a city centre are compared. The focus is on ...

The thermochemical production of hydrogen from lignocellulosic biomass is systematically analyzed by developing environomic models combining thermodynamics with economic analysis, process integration techniques and optimization strategies for the conceptua ...
