This paper describes the shaking table tests carried out at the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE) to investigate the seismic behaviour of four configurations of stacked concrete blocks, commonly used at the Euro ...

Fling-step and forward directivity are the major consequences of near-fault ground motions as they can impose unexpected seismic demands on structures located in the vicinity of the fault. The pernicious effect of forward directivity on the seismic behavio ...

This paper presents a methodology for reducing the uncertainty related to the structural behaviour of an existing building in view of a vulnerability assessment regarding future earthquake actions. Estimating the lateral load resistance is a step towards e ...

In Europe, computation of displacement demand for seismic assessment of existing buildings is essentially based on a simplified formulation of the N2 method as prescribed by Eurocode 8 (EC8). However, a lack of accuracy of the N2 method in certain conditio ...

Elastic fundamental frequency is a key-parameter of simplified seismic design and vulnerability assessment methods. Empirical relationships exist in codes to estimate this frequency but they miss experimental data to validate them accounting for national f ...

Ambient vibration measurements and 3-D nonlinear time-history numerical modeling are used to assess the retrofitting measures conducted in a 6-story unreinforced masonry building (URM) built in the end of the 19th century in Switzerland. Retrofitting measu ...

This paper presents the results of in-plane dynamic tests of masonry walls. Five half-scale walls were built, using half-scale hollow clay brick units. Two mo- ment/shear ratios (1.4 (slender) and 0.7 (squat)) and two mortar types (M2.5 and M9) have been i ...

This paper contains an investigation on the potential decrease of seismic vulnerability related to building replacements for the cities of Sion and Martigny in Switzerland. Those two cities were identified for the present research based on the accuracy of ...

Economic and environmental imperatives lead to an ever growing need to extend the service life of the existing building stock without putting the users at risk. In zones prone to moderate seismic hazard, many buildings were built without considering seismi ...

Seismic verification of existing buildings in Switzerland is currently assessed by the pre-standard 2018. In the seismic evaluation of existing buildings in that document, a minimal acceptable seismic safety must be verified, as well as proportional level of retrofitting measures. The relation between the compliance with code requirements and the risk to people associated with a certain accepted level of casualties are the bases for such verifications. The pre-standard will be soon replaced by the technical

As an approach to the problem of seismic vulnerability evaluation of existing buildings using the predicted vulnerability method, numerical models can be applied to define fragility curves of typical buildings which represent building classes. These curves ...

The non-linear seismic displacement demand prediction for low-period structures, i.e. with an initial fundamental period situated in the plateau of design response spectra is studied. In Eurocode 8, the computation of seismic displacement demands is essent ...

The knowledge of fundamental frequency and damping ratio of structures is of uppermost importance in earthquake engineering, especially to estimate the seismic demand. However, elastic and plastic frequency drops and damping variations make their estimatio ...

We present a probabilistic approach to quantify the hazard posed by volcanic ballistic projectiles (VBP) and their potential impact on the built environment. A model named Great Balls of Fire (GBF) is introduced to describe ballistic trajectories of VBPs a ...

Damage spectra for existing reinforced concrete buildings in Europe are presented in this paper. To this end, a series of time-history nonlinear dynamic analyses for single-degree-of-freedom systems with different deformation ductility values and yielding ...

Seismic risk in regions with moderate seismicity, such as Switzerland, was largely underestimated. A vast majority of existing buildings have been built without specific earthquake resistant features and do not meet modern requirements. Although several pr ...

This work reports the outcomes of an extensive experimental campaign on the retrofitting of masonry walls by means of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets, carried out at University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Fribourg. In the first stage, static-cy ...

This paper provides a simplified tool for preliminary seismic assessment of the out-of-plane behavior of non-structural walls, such as unreinforced masonry partition walls, based on non-linear time-history analyses. The studies are performed using equivale ...

Recent earthquake events throughout the world have once again exposed the vulnerability of buildings with respect to earthquakes. It is unlikely and unsustainable to design and - especially in regions with low-to-moderate seismic hazard – to retrofit all b ...

Assessing seismic vulnerability at large scales requires accurate attribution of individual buildings to more general typological classes that are representative of the seismic behavior of the buildings sharing same attributes. One-by-one evaluation of all ...
