A CFD model was developed to predict with accuracy the local electrochemical performance in an operating solid oxide fuel cell. A particular focus was given on the study of performance limitations and degradation sources caused by the design of the fuel cell, by the choice of materials and components, or by improper operating points. The model is used to understand typical degradation effects observed on stacks tested in collaboration with HTCeramix - SOFCpower. The model is able to predict several degradat

Electric vehicles (EVs) currently dominate the sales in the automotive market. A big leap in this market can be made by developing a photovoltaic product that can be integrated to an EV, as it can boost the driving range of the EV while reducing the chargi ...

Microstructural evolution in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cermet anodes has been investigated using X-ray nanotomography along with differential absorption imaging. SOFC anode supports composed of Ni and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) were subjected to e ...

The main drawback of Ni/YSZ anode supports for solid oxide fuel cell application is their low tolerance to reducing and oxidizing (RedOx) atmosphere changes, owing to the Ni/NiO volume variation. This work describes a structured approach based on design of ...

Environmental transmission electron microscopy was used to characterize in situ the reduction and oxidation of nickel from a Ni/YSZ solid oxide fuel cell anode support between 300-500°C. The reduction is done under low hydrogen pressure. The reduction initiates at the NiO/YSZ interface, then moves to the center of the NiO grain. At higher temperature the reduction occurs also at the free NiO surface and the NiO/NiO grain boundaries. The growth of Ni is epitaxial on its oxide. Due to high volume decrease, na

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) common technology is based on anode- supported cells composed of nickel-yttria stabilized zirconia (Ni-YSZ) cermet. The nickel is in oxide state (NiO) during SOFC production and is reduced to metallic nickel during the first operation. The microstructure influences the SOFC electrochemical performance as well as its stability for long-term use. Oxidation of the nickel catalyst can occur at high fuel utilization and due to air leakage. The volume change from Ni to NiO can be det

As the performances of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) get attractive, long term degradation becomes the main issue for this technology. Therefore it is essential to localise the origin of degradation and to understand its processes in order to find solution ...

Environmental transmission electron microscopy is used in combination with density functional theory calculations to study the redox stability of a nickel/yttria-stabilized zirconia solid oxide fuel cell anode. The results reveal that the transfer of oxygen from NiO to yttria-stabilized zirconia triggers the reduction reaction. During Ni reoxidation, the creation of a porous structure, due to mass transport, accounts for the redox instability of the Ni-based anode. Both the expansion of NiO during a redox c

Microstructural evolution of anode supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) during medium-term stack testing has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Low acceleration voltage SEM imaging is used to separate the three anode phases (nicke ...

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) is an interdisciplinary technology by excellence, necessitating combined knowledge and R&D from mechanical, chemical, electrical and materials science engineering. At LENI Laboratory at EPFL, SOFC cells and stacks are designed, tested and analysed in collaboration with industry, from small area single cells to now kW-range stacks integrated in a system. The hardware R&D effort is strongly assisted by, and dependent on, modeling activities, for both design (e.g. new geometries)

This review focuses on monolithic 2-terminal perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells and discusses key scientific and technological challenges to address in view of an industrial implementation of this technology. The authors start by examining the different ...

Cell durability is a crucial technological issue for SOFC commercialization, and considerable progress has been made in recent years. A number of degradation pathways have been established, amongst which microstructural changes, poisoning effects and forma ...

A reliable and aesthetically pleasing lightweight (LW) photovoltaic (PV) module for building integration is expected to develop a growing interest in the consumer market. However, its application is still limited by old buildings that are not structurally ...

Solid oxide fuel cells are able to convert fuels, including hydrocarbons, to electricity with an unbeatable efficiency even for small systems. One of the main limitations for long-term utilization is the reduction-oxidation cycling (RedOx cycles) of the ni ...

The common technology for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) is based on a cermet anode of nickel with yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ), often used as the supporting structure. One of the main limitations of this anode technology is the redox tolerance. In thi ...

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) are an efficient energy technology for converting different types of fuels to electricity and heat. An important material limitation, especially for (planar) Ni-based anode supported cells, is their redox stability. The nickel volume change between its metallic and oxide state is destroying the thin electrolyte. Thereby it is crucial to understand mechanisms of nickel reduction, oxidation and coarsening in this system. Reduction parameters are also important from an electrochem

One of the main drawbacks of anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell technology is the limited capability to withstand reduction and oxidation (“RedOx”) of the Ni phase. This study compares the effect of RedOx cycles on curvature and strength of half-cells, ...

We investigated cyanine heterojunction photovoltaic devices using carbocyanine dyes as donors and buckminsterfullerene (C60) as acceptor. In particular, we focused on the influence of cyanine counterions on the photovoltaic device characteristics. It was f ...
