The concept of the IntegrCiTy platform is built around the development of a single application as a suite of independent software: project partners will mutualize a certain number of tools that shall be integrated in the IntegrCiTy platform. Therefore, a r ...

The design and operation of building energy systems (BES) has become a subject of great interest, given the latest energy policies adapted around the world, namely increasing the energy efficiency and the share of renewable energy sources (RES) while reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to the provision of domestic energy services. Within the latter context, this work addresses the issue of optimal sizing and operation of BES while integrating an advanced CO2 based district energy network. Indeed, unli

CO2 is used more and more as a refrigerant in the commercial and food retail industries and a majority of experts believe that its share in the field of residential heating, commercial refrigeration and mobile air conditioning across Europe will be higher ...

The concept of urban CO2 networks has been developed to deploy heat pump based district heating and cooling systems in dense urban areas. The use of the CO2 phase change reduces the cost of the heat distribution while allowing to recover waste heat that is ...

The increasing use of renewable energy is a deep going trend [1] mainly supported by the sustained annual growth rate of solar photovoltaic (+45.5%), wind power (+24.0%) and Biogases (+12.8%) (Figure 1). In this context, decentralized power generation and ...

Following the pioneering work of the AGS Tokyo half project, a geographical information system has been developed to model the energy requirement of a urban area. The purpose of this platform is to model with sufficient details the energy services requirement of a given geographical area to allow the evaluation of the integration of advanced integrated energy conversion systems. This tool is used to study the emergence of more efficient cities that realize the integration of energy efficiency measures and o

The optimisation of distributed and renewable energy systems in buildings has shown that zero energy systems, using existing technologies, is within reach in the household sector where the thermal and the systems can support each other to increase renewabl ...

In the optic of providing guidelines for the optimal integration of renewable energy in a connected multi-energy context, this report presents EPFL - IPESE and EPFL - PV-lab’s common work on the initial assessment of Romande Energie (RE) demonstration site ...

Based on the audits realised on buildings by the UNIGE-CUEPE in 2007 [2], [3], the present work studies the conditions of the integration of the energy conversion system and of the building refurbishment options to fit with the GLN network and to prepare the data for integration using the tools developped in the frame of GE WP1.1. The method developed for designing and optimising the large scale integration through low temperature networks of district area is based on the data generated using the method des

The study deals with theoretical as well as with practical aspects of the conversion of geothermal heat to electricity. The report is divided into three parts: • Part I: General study • Part II: Practical experience: planning & operation of geothermal power plants • Part III: Methodology for the optimal integration of energy conversion system in geothermal power plants. In the first part the specific properties and characteristics of geothermal resources as heat sources are discussed. Both, EGS as well as d

Political authorities, energy operators and other stakeholders have the responsibility to implement energy transition pathways by increasing decentralised renewable energy generation. As the main stakeholder, authorities often lack the appropriate tools to frame and encourage the transition and to monitor the impact of energy transition policies. On the other hand, network operators need appropriate frameworks and guidelines to implement the transition with a sustainable business perspective. This report ca

Compact district energy networks in a temperature range of 10 to 16°C have a great potential for energy savings by providing a heat source for decentralized heating heat pumps, a cold source for air-conditioning and a heat sink for refrigeration or cogener ...

The 5th generation compact district heating and cooling networks in a temperature range of 10 to 16 °C have a great potential for energy savings by providing a heat source for decentralized heating heat pumps, a cold source for air-conditioning and a heat ...

The AIDRES database aims to support the long-term objective of a fully integrated industrial strategy in the EU 27, providing a service to the European Commission and a catalogue for industries to understand the effectiveness, efficiency and cost of potent ...

In this work, a tool to design district heating networks (DHN) is presented and applied to the city of Lausanne as a case study. The evaluation of the buildings’ heat/cooling demand is performed using a Geographic Information System (GIS) database, built f ...

The large share of energy consumption in the residential sector has necessitated better understanding and evaluation of the energy needs in this sector, with the objective of identifying possible pathways for improvement. A series of approaches have been u ...

The computing platform (OSMOSELua) has been developed in the Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering group IPESE at EPFL as a flexible and robust tool for the design of complex integrated energy systems. The decision tool has been developed using ...

This report present the heating and cooling system integration applied in the GLN area, based on a proposed district cooling/heating network design methodology. The cooling load is provided by a mix of direct cooling and refrigeration. To improve the total performance of the district cooling, a method for optimizing the mass flow of lake water has earlier been developed and implemented for one building in the GLN project. This method has in this project been adjusted and developed so that it can now be used

This article integrates solar potential in a given urban area for the competing technologies of Photovoltaic and thermal collectors. On an urban level, scalable from several buildings to whole cities, the authors examine the possibility of solar power inte ...

The energy services delivered to urban areas in Switzerland make up more than 45% of the national energy consumption. Thus, in the framework of the Tetraener European project, a methodology has been developed to design low temperature thermal networks base ...
