When people interact to communicate, a very important role is played by the face. In fact, thanks to it we can get information about our interlocutors: who they are, what they feel, what their intentions are, etc. Studies demonstrated that facial expression is even more significant than verbal communication, and we can daily experience this in our life (when we want to tell something important to someone, we often prefer to have this person in front of us). This is why various researchers have been interest

A recent internet based survey of over 35'000 samples has shown that when different human observers are asked to assign labels to static human facial expressions, different individuals categorize differently the same image. This fact results in a lack of a ...

Goal: Difficult tracheal intubation is a major cause of anesthesia related injuries with potential life threatening complications. Detection and anticipation of difficult airway in the preoperative period is thus crucial for the patients’ safety. We propos ...

Facial expression recognition by human observers is affected by subjective components. Indeed there is no ground truth. We have developed Discrete Choice Models (DCM) to capture the human perception of facial expressions. In a first step, the static case is treated, that is modelling perception of facial images. Image information is extracted using a computer vision tool called Active Appearance Model (AAM). DCMs attributes are based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), Expression Descriptive Units (E

Automatic facial action unit (AU) detection in videos is the key ingredient to all systems that utilize a subject face for either interaction or analysis purposes. With the ever growing range of possible applications, achieving a high accuracy in the simpl ...

This work addresses the problem of tracking, in real video sequences, the global motion of an infant face as well as the local motion of its inner features. This is a challenging task in Computer Vision field, because of the variability of facial appearance within a video sequence, most notably due to changes in head pose, expressions, lighting or occlusions. Thus, much research has been devoted to the problem of face tracking, as a specially difficult case of non-rigid object tracking. This task requires,

Facial expressions are probably the most visual method to convey emotions and one of the most powerful means to relate to each other. A typical automatic system for the recognition of facial expressions is based on a representation of the expression, learned from a training set of pre-selected meaningful features. The learning process relies on the labels associated by an expert or a group of experts to the training samples. The experts are asked to associate each images in the training set to one of the ex

Data collected through a recent web-based survey show that the perception (i.e. labeling) of a human facial expression by a human observer is a subjective process, which results in a lack of a unique ground-truth, as intended in the standard classification ...

This paper addresses the issue of automatic classification of the six universal emotional categories (joy, surprise, fear, anger, disgust, sadness) in the case of static images. Appearance parameters are extracted by an active appearance model(AAM) represe ...

In the recent years, researchers have investigated several methods of facial expression analysis. Their interest has been to apply their algorithms to sets of images labelled by a restrained number of experts. In order to deal with the generalizability of the proposed methods, databases of numerous facial expressions images have been collected. Less attention has been given to the experts. In this paper we present a web-based survey aiming at collecting the judgment on different facial expressions of a hete

Facial expression recognition is a hard and ambiguous problem in computer vision. It is hard due to the wide variety of faces and the wide variety of ways of representing the same expression. And it is ambiguous because, even though common approaches treat it as a classification problem, actually when looking at the same scene, different people can feel a different expression. In this presentation, we will show preliminary results obtained in an ongoing project of Discrete Choice Modeling of human perceptio

In this paper, we focus on the use of random projections as a dimensionality reduction tool for sampled manifolds in high-dimensional Euclidean spaces. We show that geodesic paths approximations from nearest neighbors Euclidean distances are well-preserved ...

In this paper a new extension of the CONDENSATION algorithm, with application to infants face tracking, will be introduced. In this work we address the problem of tracking a face and its features in baby video sequences. A mixed state particle filtering sc ...
