This paper describes SciClops, a method to help combat online scientific misinformation. Although automated fact-checking methods have gained significant attention recently, they require pre-existing ground-truth evidence, which, in the scientific context, ...

We demonstrate the SciLens News Platform, a novel system for evaluating the quality of news articles. The SciLens News Platform automatically collects contextual information about news articles in real-time and provides quality indicators about their valid ...

Non-trivial search predicates beyond mere equality are at the current focus of P2P research. Structured queries, as an important type of non-trivial search, have been studied extensively mainly for unstructured P2P systems so far. As unstructured P2P systems do not use indexing, structured queries are very easy to implement since they can be treated equally to any other type of query. However, this comes at the expense of very high bandwidth consumption and limitations in terms of guarantees and expressiven

In this paper we study the problem of updates in truly decentralised and self-organising systems such as pure P2P systems. We assume low online probabilities of the peers (

In recent years, crowdsourcing has become essential in a wide range of Web applications. One of the biggest challenges of crowdsourcing is the quality of crowd answers as workers have wide-ranging levels of expertise and the worker community may contain fa ...

We show in this paper that de Bruijn networks, despite providing efficient search while using constant routing table size, as well as simplicity of the understanding and implementation of such networks, are unsuitable where key distribution will be uneven, a realistic scenario for most practical applications. In presence of arbitrarily skewed data distribution, it has only recently been shown that some traditional P2P overlay networks with non-constant (typically logarithmic) in stead of constant routing ta

With an increasing number of rich embedded sensors, like accelerometer and GPS, smartphone becomes a pervasive people-centric sensing platform for inferring user’s daily activities and social contexts. Alternatively, wireless sensor network offers a compre ...

News entities must select and filter the coverage they broadcast through their respective channels since the set of world events is too large to be treated exhaustively. The subjective nature of this filtering induces biases due to, among other things, res ...

Numerous research groups and other organizations collect data from popular data sources such as online social networks. This leads to the problem of data islands, wherein all this data is isolated and lying idly, without any use to the community at large. Using existing centralized solutions such as Dropbox to replicate data to all interested parties is prohibitively costly, given the large size of datasets. A practical solution is to use a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) approach to replicate data in a self-organized m

In the web context, it is difficult to disentangle presentation from process logic, and sometimes even data is not separate from the presentation. Consequently, it becomes crucial to define an abstract model for business processes, and their mapping into an active user interface presentation, using the principle of separation of concern between the process logic, data and its presentation aspects. We endeavor to extend declarative (rule based) XSLT to accommodate the separation of process information from t

As the number of scientific papers getting published is likely to soar, most of modern paper management systems (e.g. ScienceWise, Mendeley, CiteULike) support tag-based retrieval. In that, each paper is associated with a set of \emph{tags}, allowing user ...

Web 2.0 streams, like blog postings, microblogging tweets, or RSS feeds from online communities, offer a wealth of latest news about real-world events and societal discussion. From a user’s perspective, it becomes harder and harder to get a decent overview ...

In this paper, we propose a new approach to learn multimodal multilingual embeddings for matching images and their relevant captions in two languages. We combine two existing objective functions to make images and captions close in a joint embedding space ...

With the large-scale adoption of GPS equipped mobile sensing devices, positional data generated by moving objects (e.g., vehicles, people, animals) are being easily collected. Such data are typically modeled as streams of spatio-temporal (x,y,t) points, ca ...

Ranking systems, such as those in product review sites, and various recommender systems usually employ user ratings to rank favorite items based on their quality and/or popularity. Since higher ranked items are more likely to be selected by customers and thus yield more revenues for their providers, the latter with unpopular and low quality items have strong incentives to try to strategically manipulate their ranking. However, rank manipulation attempts are also costly, especially in the presence of trust m

Existing distributed stream systems adopt a tightly-coupled communication paradigm and focus on fine-tuning of operator placements to achieve communication efficiency. This kind of approach is hard to scale (both to the nodes in the network and the users). ...

Complex activities are activities that are a combination of many simple ones. Typically, activities of daily living (ADLs) fall in this category. Complex activity recognition is an active area of interest amongst sensing and knowledge mining community toda ...

Pervasive installation of smart meters opens new possibilities for advanced analytics of electricity consumption at the level of the individual household. One of the important tasks in various Smart Grid applications, from demand-response to emergency management, is the short-term electricity load forecasting at different scales, from an individual customer to a whole portfolio of customers. In this work we perform a quantitative evaluation of different machine learning methods for short-term (1 hour ahead

We find that there lacks a formal algebraic framework in the research area of P2P information retrieval. Such a formal framework is indispensable and pivotal. On the one hand, no solid theoretical foundation can explain why the results of many ad-hoc commercial ranking algorithms are good or bad; on the other hand, in some cases, it might be preferable in a decentralized search system to use different retrieval models and different ranking algorithms at the same time since each separate document collection

Until recently, most data integration techniques involved central components, e.g., global schemas, to enable transparent access to heterogeneous databases. Today, however, with the democratization of tools facilitating knowledge elicitation in machine-pro ...
