In this work, we focus on managing scientific environmental data, which are measurement readings collected from wireless sensors. In environmental science applications, raw sensor data often need to be validated, interpolated, aligned and aggregated before ...

Smart sensors, such as smart meters or smart phones, are nowadays ubiquitous. To be "smart", however, they need to process their input data with limited storage and computational resources. In this paper, we convert the stream of sensor data into a stream ...

Queries to detect isomorphic subgraphs are important in graph-based data management. While the problem of subgraph isomorphism search has received considerable attention for the static setting of a single query, or a batch thereof, existing approaches do n ...

Demand Response (DR) is a mechanism in which electricity consumers alter their demand in response to power grid’s supply and economic conditions. DR programs have the potential to improve resource efficiency, sustainability, grid reliability and economic v ...

This paper describes a novel approach for obtaining semantic interoperability among data sources in a bottom-up, semi-automatic manner without relying on pre-existing, global semantic models. We assume that large amounts of data exist that have been organized and annotated according to local schemas. Seeing semantics as a form of agreement, our approach enables the participating data sources to incrementally develop global agreement in an evolutionary completely decentralized process that solely relies on p

With the prevalence of GPS-embedded mobile devices, enormous amounts of mobility data are being collected in the form of trajectory - a stream of (x,y,t) points. Such trajectories are of heterogeneous entities - vehicles, people, animals, parcels etc. Most ...

Understanding narratives requires reasoning about the cause-and-effect relationships between events mentioned in the text. While existing foundation models yield impressive results in many NLP tasks requiring reasoning, it is unclear whether they understan ...

In this paper, we propose a probabilistic framework targeting three important issues in the computation of quality and trust in decentralized systems. Specifically, our approach addresses the multi-dimensionality of quality and trust, taking into account c ...

As the number of sensors that pervade our lives increases (e.g., environmental sensors, phone sensors, etc.), the efficient management of massive amount of sensor data is becoming increasingly important. The infinite nature of sensor data poses a serious chal ...

Minimizing communication cost is a fundamental problem in large-scale federated sensor networks. Existing solutions applicable for the problem are often ad-hoc for specific query types, or they are inefficient when query results contain large volumes of data to be transferred over the networks. Maintaining model-based views of data streams has been recently highlighted because it permits the data communication over networks to be efficient by transmitting parameter values for the models, instead of sending

Participatory sensing has emerged as a new data collection paradigm, in which humans use their own devices (cell phone accelerometers, cameras, etc.) as sensors. This paradigm enables to collect a huge amount of data from the crowd for world-wide applicati ...

The growing number of web services advocates distributed discovery infrastructures which are semantics-enabled and support quality of service (QoS). In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for semantic discovery of web services in P2P-based registries ...

As mobile cloud computing facilitates a wide spectrum of smart applications, the need for fusing various types of data available in the cloud grows rapidly. In particular, social and sensor data lie at the core in such applications, but typically processed ...

Reputation-based trust models based on statistical learning have been intensively studied for large-scale distributed systems whereas practical application of game-theoretic approaches using sanctioning are still very little understood in such settings. This paper studies the relation between accuracy of such computational learning models and their ability to effectively enforce cooperation among rational agents as a result of their game-theoretic properties. We provide theoretical results that show under w

This paper describes, develops, and validates SciLens, a method to evaluate the quality of scientific news articles. The starting point for our work are structured methodologies that define a series of quality aspects for manually evaluating news. Based on ...

Unstructured overlay networks are driven by simple protocols that are easy to analyze and implement. The lack of structure, however, leads to weak message delivery guarantees and poor scaling. Structured overlays impose a global overlay topology that is th ...

GPS devices allow recording the movement track of the moving object they are attached to. This data typically consists of a stream of spatio-temporal (x,y,t) points. For application purposes the stream is transformed into finite subsequences called {\em tr ...

This lecture introduces systematically into the problem of managing large data collections in peer-to-peer systems. Search over large datasets has always been a key problem in peer-to-peer systems and the peer-to-peer paradigm has incited novel directions in the field of data management. This resulted in many novel peer-to-peer data management concepts and algorithms, for supporting data management tasks in a wider sense, including data integration, document management and text retrieval. The lecture covers

The Swiss National Competence Center for Research in mobile Information and Communication Systems (NCCR-MICS or MICS) is one of several research initiatives sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation to promote long term research projects in areas of vital strategic importance for the evolution of science in Switzerland, for the country's economy and for Swiss society. NCCR-MICS covers a wide spectrum of topics in the area of mobile information and communication systems ranging from information theo
