The heterogeneity of today's Web sources requires information retrieval (IR) systems to handle multi-modal queries. Such queries define a user's information needs by different data modalities, such as keywords, hashtags, user profiles, and other media. Rec ...

In the era of misinformation and information inflation, the credibility assessment of the produced news is of the essence. However, fact-checking can be challenging considering the limited references presented in the news. This challenge can be transcended ...

Failures of any type are common in current datacenters, partly due to the higher scales of the data stored. As data scales up, its availability becomes more complex, while different availability levels per application or per data item may be required. In t ...

In a handful of years only, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems have become an integral part of the Internet. After a few key successes related to music-sharing (e.g., Napster or Gnutella), they rapidly developed and are nowadays firmly established in various conte ...

Maximal subgraph mining is increasingly important in various domains, including bioinformatics, genomics, and chemistry, as it helps identify common characteristics among a set of graphs and enables their classification into different categories. Existing ...

As various kinds of sensors penetrate our daily life (e.g., sensor networks for environmental monitoring, GPS for localization and navigation), the efficient management of massive amount of sensor data becomes increasingly important at present. Many sensor ...

In this paper, we present a query-driven indexing/retrieval strategy for efficient full text retrieval from large document collections distributed within a structured P2P network. Our indexing strategy is based on two important properties: (1) the generate ...

As the Sensor Internet starts to become reality, increasingly heterogeneous sensor networks are becoming interconnected into federated sensor networks and provide huge volumes of sensor data for a variety of applications to large user communities, such as ...

The link structure of the Web graph is used in algorithms such as Kleinberg's HITS and Google's PageRank to assign authoritative weights to Web pages and thus rank them. In HITS, a solid theoretical model is lacking and the algorithm often leads to non-unique or non-intuitive rankings where zero weights may inappropriately be assigned to parts of a network. In PageRank, a model of random walks is proposed such that the theory about the stationary state of a Markov process can be applied to assure convergenc

With the commoditization of digital devices, personal information and media sharing is becoming a key application on the pervasive Web. In such a context, data annotation rather than data production is the main bottleneck. Metadata scarcity represents a ma ...

A sliding window top-k (top-k/w) query monitors incoming data stream objects within a sliding window of size w to identify the k highest-ranked objects with respect to a given scoring function over time. Processing of such queries is challenging because, e ...

The huge success of eBay has proven the demand for customer-to-customer (C2C) electronic commerce. eBay is a centralized infrastructure with all its scalability problems (network bandwidth, server load, availability, etc.). In this paper we argue that C2C e-commerce is an application domain that maps naturally onto the emergent field of P2P systems simply by its underlying interaction model of customers, i.e., peers. This offers the opportunity to take P2P systems beyond mere file sharing systems into inter

Web Search is increasingly entity centric; as a large fraction of common queries target specific entities, search results get progressively augmented with semi-structured and multimedia information about those entities. However, search over personal web br ...

Data models capture the structure and characteristic properties of data entities, e.g., in terms of a database schema or an ontology. They are the backbone of diverse applications, reaching from information integration, through peer-to-peer systems and ele ...

Peer-to-peer paradigm is increasingly employed for organizing distributed resources for various applications, e.g. content distribution, open storage grid etc. In open environments, even when proper access control mechanisms supervise the access to the res ...

Research on Web credibility assessment can significantly benefit from new models that are better suited for evaluation and study of adversary strategies. Currently employed models lack several important aspects, such as the explicit modeling of Web content ...

In this paper we consider distributed K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) search and range query processing in high dimensional data. Our approach is based on Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) which has proven very efficient in answering KNN queries in centralized set ...

We propose an automated image selection system to assist photo editors in selecting suitable images for news articles. The system fuses multiple textual sources extracted from news articles and accepts multilingual inputs. It is equipped with char-level wo ...

A large fraction of online queries targets entities. For this reason, Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) increasingly contain information about the searched entities such as pictures, short summaries, related entities, and factual information. A key facet ...

The Web became the central medium for valuable sources of information fusion applications. However, such user-generated resources are often plagued by inaccuracies and misinformation as a result of the inherent openness and uncertainty of the Web. While fi ...
