Graphene transfer methods either employ support layers that have to be removed after transfer, giving rise to impurities, or are based on delamination from bulk crystals, yielding only small flakes with various thicknesses. We present a graphene transfer m ...

We report on the magnetization reversal mechanism of Co islands on Pt(111) as a function of their size and shape. We measure the zero-field susceptibility chi(T) and low-temperature magnetization curves M(H) with in situ magneto-optical Kerr effect. Together with the island morphology deduced from scanning tunneling microscopy, this creates sufficient information to determine both the magnetization reversal mechanism and the distribution of anisotropy energies between perimeter and surface atoms. We find a

Low-temperature x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements on the endohedral single-molecule magnet DySc2N@C-80 at the Dy M-4,M-5 edges reveal a shrinking of the opening of the observed hysteresis with increasing x-ray flux. Time-dependent measurements show that the exposure of the molecules to x-rays resonant with the Dy M-5 edge accelerates the relaxation of magnetization more than off-resonant x-rays. The results cannot be explained by a homogeneous temperature rise due to x-ray absorption. Moreover,

We report on the strengths and limitations of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) when used for characterising atomic-scale features of quasi two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and single layers of hexagonal boron nitride, which may present stron ...

We investigate the effects of Na adsorption on the electronic structure of bare and Ir cluster superlattice-covered epitaxial graphene on Ir(111) using angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. At Na saturation coverage, a massive charge migration from sodium atoms to graphene raises the graphene Fermi level by ∼1.4 eV relative to its neutrality point. We find that Na is adsorbed on top of the graphene layer, and when coadsorbed onto an Ir cluster superlattice, it results i

We present a comprehensive study of the magnetism and morphology of an ultrahigh density array of Co nanoclusters self-assembled on the single atomic layer GdAu2 on Au(111) template surface. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy, x-ray magnetic circular ...

TbPc2 single-molecule magnets adsorbed on a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier exhibit record magnetic remanence, record hysteresis opening, perfect out-of-plane alignment of the magnetic easy axes, and self-assembly into a well-ordered layer.

By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy we reveal the structural and electronic properties of multilayer graphene on Ru(0001). We prove that large ethylene exposure allows the synthesis of two distinct phase ...

We study the coexistence of strain-and charge-mediated magnetoelectric coupling in a cobalt (0-7 nm) wedge on ferroelectric (011)-oriented Pb(Mg-1/3/Nb-2/3)O-3-PbTiO3 using surface-sensitive x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Co L-3,L-2 edges. Three distinct electric field driven remanent magnetization states can be set in the Co film at room temperature. Ab initio density functional theory calculations unravel the relative contributions of both strain and charge to the ob

We employ variable-temperature spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy in constant current mode to read the magnetic state of monodomain cobalt nanoparticles on Pt(111). In order to avoid stray fields we use in situ prepared antiferromagnetically (Cr) ...

We have studied the fluoride-bridged Dy-Cr molecular nanomagnet [Dy(hfac)(4)-CrF2(py)(4)]center dot 1/2CHCl(3) by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The obtained element-specific magnetization curves allow for a quantification of the sign and strength of the magnetic exchange coupling between the Dy and the Cr ions. In an effective spin-1/2 formalism only taking into account the ground Kramers doublet of the Dy-III ion, we find a coupling strength of j (eff,z) = -2.3(1) cm(-1). Further, we find that

By studying the magnetic behavior of self-assembled Co islands on a single-crystal metal surface, Pt(111), we show how the magnetic anisotropy evolves from isolated atoms to monolayer islands and films. Single Co adatoms are found to have a giant magnetocr ...

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, atomic multiplet simulations, and density functional theory calculations are employed to identify criteria for the optimum combination of supporting alkaline earth oxide and adsorption site maximizing the spin lifetimes o ...

A surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) setup fully integrated in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber is presented. The system has been designed to combine in situ MOKE and scanning tunneling microscopy. Magnetic fields up to 0.3 T can be applied at any angle i ...

We have employed x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Ni andMn L-3,L-2 edges in LaMnO3/LaNiO3 superlattices grown along (001) and (111) orientations. Our results show a significant XMCD signal and thus the prese ...

An isostructural series of dinuclear chromium(III)-lanthanide(III) clusters is formed by fluoride abstraction of cis-CrF2(phen)(2) by Ln(3+) resulting in LnF(3) and methoxide-bridged Cr-Ln clusters (Ln = Nd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3)) of formula [Cr-III(phen ...
