Hydropower systems often operate in contextual conditions quite different from those for which they have been planned for. Often, the pace at which the changes occur does not invite operators to analyse their long-term effects and quantify the resilience of these system. During the last decades hydropower has experienced strong changes. Energy markets have evolved, dam safety guidelines and legislations have undergone improvements, societal awareness towards their potentially adverse effects on natural ecos

Reservoir sedimentation and consequently lack of storage volume and perturbation of the operation of intakes and bottom outlet is a key challenge affecting both hydropower production as well as dam safety and flood management. In the framework of a peer-re ...

Small hydropower plants can improve their proficiency if they are able to become more flexible on power production, answering the need of peak energy demand, following the needs of the energy market and providing ancillary services in the electricity suppl ...

In its Energy Strategy 2050, Switzerland is revising its energy perspectives with a strong focus on renewable sources of energy and in particular hydropower. In this context, the Swiss Government funded a number of competence centers for energy research (S ...

Heightening very high gravity dams is one of the solutions considered as part of the energy transition and to mitigate the effects of climate change. The paper presents a stepwise approach to assess the potential for dam heightening and its impact on the h ...

The total storage capacity of the reservoirs in Switzerland represents only 42% of their annual production of electricity, but secures approximately 100% of hydropower’s contribution to the winter electricity supply. In order to avoid spilling, the storage ...

High elevation or high latitude hydropower production (HP) strongly relies on water resources that are influenced by glacier melt and are thus highly sensitive to climate warming. Despite of the wide-spread glacier retreat since the development of HP infra ...

The papers present three innovative solutions for fine sediment manage- ments in seasonal reservoirs, which are at different stages of maturity. Operational reservoir stirring using jet-like inflows may facilitate sediment routing, at no addi- tional cost ...

Reservoir sedimentation is, at present, one of the main concerns in the operational management of dams. The resulting reduction of storage capacity has negative impacts on the hydropower production, flood protection, and availability of water for irrigatio ...

Many Alpine rivers are affected by hydro-peaking, strong sub-daily fluctuations of discharge caused by intermittent power production from hydropower plants. Adding a retention volume at the outlet of a hydropower plant aims at attenuating hydro-peaking to a level where adverse effects on fish and invertebrates are minimal. The performance of such a retention volume needs to be assessed when extensions to the hydropower system are envisaged to improve operational flexibility. Using a set of scenarios for fut

Only 42 % of the mean annual production of large hydropower plants in the Swiss Alps is stored in their reservoirs. Once the reservoirs are full at the end of the summer semester, plants are operated as run-on-the-river in order to avoid spilling. A signif ...

Run-off-river hydro projects can create sustainable energy minimizing impacts to the surrounding environment. Among many advantages of these systems, whose development has in fact been largely supported during the past years by the confederation, their main limitation is that their functioning is dependent by the available discharge, as they do not have storage. In order to overcome this constrain and enhance their flexible use, the Smart Storage Operations (SSO) are introduced (Figure 1c). SSO consist on u

Smart storage operations (SSO) have been implemented on an alpine run-off-river HPP (case study: KW Gletsch-Oberwald HPP) in order to enhance the flexibility of the power plant (ref poster SmallFlex). SSO operations consist on the use of available space underground, such as the settling basin, in order to store the water, particularly in periods of the year with low inflow, which can afterward be used for energy production when the demand and the remuneration tariffs are higher and at a discharge close to t

The turbulent plunging jet of a nearly incompressible fluid into a stagnant fluid is of great importance in many practical applications, especially for the engineering of hydropower. As an example, the dynamic load exerted by the impact of turbulent high-v ...

Reservoir sedimentation is, at present, one of the main concerns in the operational management of dams in the Alps. For larger seasonal storage reservoirs, the main operational concern is the blockage of bottom outlets and turbine abrasion. In case of infr ...

The prospect of a renewable transition seems plausible for many countries, but can be shrouded in risks, costs and challenges. This paper illuminates a path for such a transition with a numerical investigation, aimed at resolving the power dynamics of a co ...

The dissipation of energy of flood discharges from water releasing structures of dams is often done by plunging jets diffusing in water and impacting on the riverbed downstream. The construction of expensive concrete structures for energy dissipation can b ...

This paper presents a comprehensive methodology to model and determine the annual sediment balance of a complex system of interconnected reservoirs, based on the detailed interpretation of a multi-decadal data series of reservoir management and modelling o ...

Hydropower production (HP) in high mountainous areas relies on snow- and glacier melt influenced water resources and is thus highly sensitive to climate warming. Based on the case of Switzerland that produces over 50% of its electricity from hydropower, we ...

The response of concrete gravity dams under seismic loads is a major concern of dam safety assessment in earthquake-prone areas. This study focuses on the seismic analysis of the tallest non-overflow monolith of Pine Flat Dam. The paper presents results of numerical modelling considering the effects of fluid-structure interaction for both linear and nonlinear analysis using accelerations records of the historical Taft earthquake and of an artificially designed Endurance Time Acceleration Function (ETAF).
