High-velocity plunging jets, issuing from ood release structures of dams, may result in scouring of the rocky riverbed and even endanger the foundation of the dams. Assessment of the scour extent is essential to ensure the safety of the dam and appurtenant ...

The safety of dams is very often endangered by the formation of scour near the foundation as a result of high-velocity jet impact. These jets issue from appurtenant structures such as spillways and may impact in the immediate vicinity of the dam toe. The process of rock scour is very complex and full physical understanding of the water-air-rock interaction is still lacking. With his PhD research Dr. Matteo Federspiel filled up a gap towards a better scientific understanding of the scouring process. For the

Flood release structures of high-head dams generate high-velocity plunging jets. These may scour the downstream rocky riverbed and even damage the dam foundation. Assessment of the scour evolution is essential to ensure the safety of the dam and appurtenant structures, as well as to guarantee the stability of its abutments. In the framework of a research project, near-prototype scaled experimental installation generating high-velocity jet impact in a plunge pool has been equipped with an artificial rock bloc

Within the fluvial network, confluences are particular areas characterized by great ecological value where flow dynamics and bed morphology are much influenced by local patterns. The aim of this article is to describe the influence of the convergence angle ...

Block Stability in 3 Dimensions (BS3D) is an incremental-iterative algorithm and code to analyse general failure modes of rock blocks subjected to generic forces, including non-conservative forces such as water pressure. This algorithm is used to investigate the effect of high-velocity water jet impact on the stability of single rock blocks in plunge pools. After reviewing the literature, an approach is proposcd to estimate the dynamic water pressure fluctuations at the pool bottom and in rock fractures. Th

The Gloriettes concrete arch dam in the French Pyrenees showed a deficit of 80 m3/s for the new design flood of 150 m3/s. To address the problem, a Piano Key Weir (PKW) as an additional spillway was designed. The existence of a geotechnically unstable zone downstream of the PKW site, as well as requirements for environmental integration, did not allow a direct trajectory of the tailrace channel, but imposed an abrupt change in direction halfway. A stepped channel including an intermediate stilling basin was

In many countries dams are found to have insufficient flood discharge capacity with respect to updated design floods. Upgradig of spillway discharge capacity has therefore become a significant issue for operators of hydropower plants. The Gloriettes concrete arch dam in the French Pyrenees, operated by EDF, shows a deficit of 80m3/s for the new design flood of 150m3/s. Therefore a complementary spillway on the right bank is to be implemented. The type of labyrinth weir known as the Piano Key Weir (PKW) was
