We identify the turbulent regimes in the tokamak scrape-off layer as a function of plasma resistivity, electron to ion mass ratio, safety factor, and magnetic shear. We find that two main instabilities drive turbulence in the SOL: Drift Waves, with their r ...

Important steps towards the understanding of turbulent transport have been made with the development of the gyrokinetic framework for describing turbulence and with the emergence of numerical codes able to solve the set of gyrokinetic equations. This paper ...

The implementation of linearized operators describing inter- and like-species collisions in the global gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code ORB5 [ S. Jolliet, Comput. Phys. Commun. 177, 409 (2007) ] is presented. A neoclassical axisymmetric equilibrium with s ...

A global plasma turbulence simulation code, ORB5, is presented. It solves the gyrokinetic electrostatic equations including zonal flows in axisymmetric magnetic geometry. The present version of the code assumes a Boltzmann electron response on magnetic sur ...

We present non-linear self-consistent 3D global fluid simulations of the SOL plasma dynamics using the Global Braginskii Solver (GBS) code. The code solves the drift-reduced Braginkii equations in a collisional plasma, with cold ions. The GBS code, originally developed for an electrostatic, 2D configuration has been recently upgraded to describe the SOL turbulence with the introduction of the variable curvature along the magnetic field lines, the magnetic shear, and the electromagnetic effects. The code pec

Plasma edge turbulence plays a fundamental role in determining the performance of fusion devices. In the Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL), the plasma dynamics is the result of the interplay between the plasma outflow from the core, perpendicular transport and parallel losses at the limiter, with the high collisionality that makes possible the use of a fluid model. This work presents Scrape-Off-Layer 3D global fluid simulations using the GBS code [1], that evolves the drift-reduced Braginskii equations [2] for a colli

Turbulence and Transport Reduction with Negative Triangularity : Correlation ECE Measurements in TCV Due to turbulence, core energy transport in fusion devices such as tokamaks generally exceeds collisional transport by at least an order of magnitude. It is therefore crucial to understand the instabilities driving the turbulent state and to find ways to control them. Plasma shape is one of these fundamental tools. In low collisionality plasmas, such as in a reactor, changing the plasma shape from Dee-shape

Flux-driven global gyrokinetic codes are now mature enough to make predictions in terms of turbulence and transport in tokamak plasmas. Some of the recent breakthroughs of three such codes, namely GYSELA, ORB5 and XGC1, are reported and compared wherever a ...

Simulations of edge turbulence are particularly challenging due to the presence of large amplitude fluctuations and to the coupling of equilibrium and fluctuating scales. While validating edge simulations is necessary to assess the accuracy of our understanding, difficulties in experimental diagnostics and the lack of a precise validation methodology have, to date, severely limited the process. The Global Braginskii Solver (GBS) code has been developed to simulate plasma turbulence in edge-relevant conditio

The theoretical study of plasma turbulence is of central importance to fusion research. Experimental evidence indicates that the confinement time results mainly from the turbulent transport of energy, the magnitude of which depends on the turbulent state r ...

The mutual interactions of ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven modes, zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes (GAM) in tokamak plasmas are investigated using a global nonlinear gyrokinetic formulation with totally unconstrained evolution of temperature g ...

In this work, a Fourier solver [B.F. McMillan, S. Jolliet, A. Bottino, P. Angelino, T.M. Tran, L Villard, Comp. Phys. Commun. 181 (2010) 7151 is implemented in the global Eulerian gyrokinetic code GT5D [Y. Idomura, H. Urano, N. Aiba, S. Tokuda, Nucl. Fusio ...

We discuss recent studies addressing the properties of tokamak SOL turbulence using a global, electromagnetic, fluid drift-reduced Braginskii model. Non-linear simulations are carried out using the Global Braginskii Solver (GBS) code [1], which is capable of carrying out self-consistent, global three-dimensional simulations of the plasma dynamics in the tokamak SOL. The simulations involve plasma profile formation in the SOL as a power balance between plasma flux from the core, the turbulent radial transpor

Plasma Turbulence studied by means of Correlation-ECE in the TEM domain in TCV Electron temperature fluctuations in the TEM domain have been measured in TCV using the correlation-ECE diagnostics [1]. Significant broadband electron temperature fluctuations are found radially extending between 0.3

Owing to its detailed diagnostics, feasibility of parameter scans, and relatively simple configuration, the basic plasma physics experiment TORPEX is an ideal testbed in which to perform experiment/simulation comparisons and to contribute to the establishment of the validation methodology. Focusing on observables related to Langmuir probe measurements, we consider a number of physical quantities that can be used as observables for experiment/simulation comparison. We classify the observables according to a

Highly variable flux surface averaged heat fluxes are resolved in gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence, even in large systems. Radially propagating fronts or avalanches are also seen. Their propagation lengths in gyroradii a ...

Linearized operators describing inter-species and like-species collisions have been discretized and implemented in the gyrokinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code ORB5 [S. Jolliet, Comp. Phys. Comm. 177, 409 ( 2007)] based on the delta-f approach. Simulation r ...

The particle-in-cell code ORB5 is a global gyrokinetic turbulence simulation code in tokamak geometry. It has been developed at CRPP, Lausanne, Switzerland, with major contributions from IPP, Garching, Germany, and IPP, Greifswald, Germany, under a long-st ...

We develop a predictive theory applicable to the scrape-off layer (SOL) of inner-wall limited plasmas. Using the non-linear flattening of the pressure profile as a saturation mechanism for resistive ballooning modes, we are able to demonstrate and quantify ...

Collisionless delta-f gyrokinetic particle-in-cell simulations suffer from the entropy paradox, in which the entropy grows linearly in time while low-order moments are saturated. As a consequence, these simulations do not reach a steady state and are unsui ...
