Thick-film materials are very advantageous for piezoresistive pressure and force sensors because of ease of processing, reliability and low cost. The standard substrate material used with thick-film technology for sensing is alumina, but its elastic modulus is high and its strength rather low. Steels offer better mechanical properties and permit assembly without an elastomer seal, which is required for pressure sensing in severe conditions. In order to use the steel as substrate, the standard firing tempera

Performance of piezoresistive thick-film pressure sensors on steel substrates is hindered by the high required firing temperatures of the layers, which cause degradation of the substrate mechanical properties. Special steels or alloys that are relatively unaffected by these temperatures are available, but their cost is very high. A much more promising alternative is the reduction of the thick-film firing temperature, in order to allow application of the standard high-strength steels used in thin-film cells.

Smart packaging concept has been the driving force for the search of advanced technologies to produce multi-functional micro-scale devices for long years. In this sense, LTCC technology has been recently addressed as the suitable choice for a wide range of applications. In addition to its attractive characteristics for high-frequency applications those have been profited for a long time, it receives a growing attention for sensor applications in the recent years as well. This is due to the easy machinabilit

Recently, high-strength zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) ceramic substrates have attracted interest, because they offer much improved mechanical properties over straight alumina, while maintaining advantages such as good thermal conductivity and chemical stability. This allows their application in high-power electronics and piezoresistive thick-film sensors, where the substrate is subjected to considerable stress. This work examines the impact of processing a range of thick film materials (Ag- and Au-based

The aim of this work is to examine the possibility of high performance pressure sensors based on piezoresistive thick films deposited on steel membranes, which combine the performance advantage of thin-film sensors (high-strength steel substrates, assembly without elastomer seal) with the low cost of ceramic thick-film sensors. As standard thick-film firing conditions degrade the properties of most high-strength steels, two routes were explored: 1) application of a special steel, which does not undergo mech

Low-temperature cofired ceramic (LTCC) combines many advantageous features for low-range (force & pressure) piezoresistive sensors: ease of 3D structuration, availability of very thin sheets, low elastic modulus and yet reasonable mechanical strength. This ...

Ease of fabrication and design flexibility are two attractive features of low temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) technology for fabrication of complex micro-fluidic devices. Such structures are designed and processed using different shaping methods, the extent and complexity of which depends on the final device specifications (dimensions, mechanical and functional properties). In this work, we propose a sacrificial layer method based on carbon-black paste, which burns out during the LTCC firing stage. The

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate sensors and structures fabricated using the LTCC technology, which has been addressed and employed increasingly as a smart packaging approach for several applications. The focus will be on inclination and cantile ...

The design procedure, realization and measurements of an implantable radiator for telemetry applications are presented. First, free space analysis allows the choice of the antenna typology with reduced computation time. Subsequently the antenna, inserted i ...

LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramic) technology has recently gained a remarkable application potential in sensors field. This can be ascribed to many advantages it offers: the ease of LTCC tape handling providing a great freedom in design and fabrication, feasible processing conditions bringing down the costs, excellent thermal and chemical resistance, and combination of electrical and mechanical functions in a reliable hermetic system. In scope of this, fabrication of an LTCC-based millinewton force sen

In this work, a novel sensor for measuring the viscosity of a gas, based on the combination of a heating cavity, a pressure sensor and a meander with a high resistance to flow, all integrated in low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology, is presented. This paper reports the design, thermal characterisation and modelling of the heater module in quasi-stationary operation. The performance of the heater is satisfactory, and good agreement between experimental and calculated thermal properties is found

Monolithic actuators have turned out to be an efficient solution to several design and assembly problems associated with inertial drive positioning systems. In addition to their compact size with a possible thickness below 1.5 mm, the modular actuators presented in this paper can be manufactured cost efficiently even for small batches. This paper explains the basic operation of the actuators and their fabrication technology based on thick-film technology with assembly on either Al2O3 substrates or PCB. Some

This work presents calculations and measurements on a novel low-cost thick-film force sensor design for the 100 N force range. The mechanical concept of these force sensors is based on a double ring biaxial load, which allows the fabrication of simple sens ...

The ring-on-ring bending principle allows the fabrication of simple, low-cost thick-film piezoresistive sensors for compressive forces in the 10 to 400 N range. However some imperfections are encountered in its basic embodiment, such as relatively high for ...

Two simple low-cost thick-film force sensor designs are optimised, characterised and tested in this work, combining calculations of sensor element and joint stresses, joint strength characterisation and measurement of complete sensors. All sensors are base ...

Fabrication of a millinewton force sensor, which is based on LTCC technology as an alternative to the widely used alumina (Al2O3) is described. The new sensor, integrated with piezoresistor thick-film, has shown an increase in the sensitivity by two times ...
