Dehalorespiration is an environmental-friendly bacterial anaerobic respiration that couples reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic pollutants with energy conservation. Tetrachloroethene (PCE) respiration is encoded by the pce gene cluster in Desulfitobacterium hafniense strain TCE1, a cluster embedded in the composite transposon Tn-Dha1. The objective of this study was to characterize the stability and/or mobility of the pce transposon. Starting from an inoculum of strain TCE1 routinely growing on

Technical hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and lindane are obsolete pesticides whose former production and use led to widespread contaminations posing serious and lasting health and environmental risks. Out of nine possible stereoisomers, α-, β-, γ-, and δ-HCH ...

Many factors influence success and failure of large-scale faecal sludge and wastewater treatment projects in low-income countries. Benchmarking indicators and multicriteria analysis were adapted to define key institutional, technical and financial factors, ...

The anaerobic degradation potential at a chloroethene-contaminated site was investigated by operating two anoxic column aquifer microcosms enriched in iron(III). One column was fed with vinyl chloride (VC) only (column A) and one with acetate in addition ( ...

Desulfitobacterium spp. are ubiquitous organisms with a broad metabolic versatility and some isolates have the ability to use tetrachloroethene (PCE) as terminal electron acceptor. In order to identify proteins involved in this organohalide respiration pro ...

Aerobic granules are dense microbial aggregates with the potential to replace floccular sludge for the treatment of wastewaters. In bubble-column sequencing batch reactors, distinct microbial populations dominated propionate-and acetate-cultivated aerobic ...

The ribosome-bound Trigger Factor (TF) chaperone assists folding of newly synthesized polypeptides and participates in the assembly of macromolecular complexes. In the present study we showed that multiple distinct TF paralogues are present in genomes of D ...

The presence of chloroethene dechlorination activity as well as several bacterial genera containing mainly organohalide respiring members was investigated in 34 environmental samples from 18 different sites. Cultures inoculated with these environmental sam ...

Although the production and use of technical hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and lindane (the purified insecticidal isomer -HCH) are prohibited in most countries, residual concentrations still constitute an immense environmental burden. Many studies describe t ...

The competition of two Rhodocyclaceae-affiliated bacterial populations was assessed during the formation and maturation of aerobic granular sludge in two different types of anaerobic-aerobic sequencing batch reactors. Zoogloea spp. (57%) were predominant i ...

The pceABCT gene cluster from Dehalobacter restrictus is one model system for tetrachloroethene (PCE) respiration. In the present study we aim to decipher the stoichiometry of the pceABCT gene products and the composition of PceA-containing membrane-bound protein complexes in D. restrictus. Quantitative proteomics (qProt), membrane extraction, CN-PAGE, and an in-gel enzymatic assay were developed. A qProt analysis performed on the membrane fraction revealed a 1.5:1 stoichiometric relationship between PceA a

Biomethane potential (BMP) tests are used to determine the amount of methane that can be produced from organic materials in order to design different components of full-scale anaerobic digestion (AD) plants such as size of the digesters and units exploitin ...

In chloroethene-contaminated sites undergoing in situ bioremediation, groundwater acidification is a frequent problem in the source zone, and buffering strategies have to be implemented to maintain the pH in the neutral range. An alternative to conventiona ...

Lindane, the gamma-isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), is a potent insecticide. Purified lindane or unpurified mixtures of this and alpha-, beta-, and gamma- isomers of HCH were widely used as commercial insecticides in the last half of the 20th century ...

Dehalobacter restrictus strain PER-K23 (DSM 9455) is the type strain of the species Dehalobacter restrictus. D. restrictus strain PER-K23 grows by organohalide respiration, coupling the oxidation of H2 to the reductive dechlorination of tetra- or trichloro ...

The strategic adaptation of prokaryotes in polluted niches involves the efficient regulation of their metabolism. The obligate anaerobe and metabolically versatile Desulfitobacterium hafniense reductively dechlorinates halogenated organic compounds (so-cal ...

Despite recent advances in down-stream processing, production of microalgae remains substantially limited because of economical reasons. Harvesting and dewatering are the most energy-intensive processing steps in their production and contribute 20–30% of t ...

Reductive dehalogenases are the key enzymes involved in the anaerobic respiration of organohalides such as the widespread groundwater pollutant tetrachloroethene. The increasing number of available bacterial genomes and metagenomes gives access to hundreds ...

Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) contaminated soils were treated for a period of up to 64 days in situ (HCH dumpsite, Lucknow) and ex situ (University of Dehli) in line with three bioremediation approaches. The first approach, biostimulation, involved addition of ammonium phosphate and molasses, while the second approach, bioaugmentation, involved addition of a microbial consortium consisting of a group of HCH-degrading sphingomonads that were isolated from HCH contaminated sites. The third approach involved a c
