The kink behavior of non-slender glass fiber-reinforced epoxy prismatic specimens of variable length and fiber volume fraction at temperatures ranging from 25 degrees C to 125 degrees C was investigated. Splitting failure occurred at the glassy state while ...

Energetically weak points in thermally insulated building envelopes are formed by thermal breaks that are implemented to structurally connect external balconies to internal slabs. Current thermal breaks comprise stainless steel bars that penetrate the insu ...

The aim of this work was to investigate to what extent the performance of a glass fiberreinforced polymer (GFRP) sandwich slab-bridge with uniform high-density balsa core could be improved in terms of structural efficiency and weight thanks to a more compl ...

The aims of this research is to experimentally investigate the post-wrinkling behavior in GFRP cell-core sandwiches with orthotropic webs as well as the applicability of existing theories, e.g. the rotated stress field theory, to orthotropic FRP material systems. Through biaxial compression-tension experiments on web-core panels, the redistribution of the strain field during post-wrinkling was examined for two different fiber architectures, [90/0] and [±45] stacking sequences. The results prove that the fib

Temperature dependence of physical and mechanical properties is considered in most thermal and mechanical response models for composite materials. Based on thermogravimetry analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis conduc ...

The ductility and time-dependent recovery of a ductile acrylic adhesive were investigated in this work. The quasi-static true tensile and compressive strain behaviors were examined at different strain rates, taking large deformations into account. Yield st ...

This paper aims to present an experimental investigation on the behavior of web-flange junctions (WFJs) rotational stiffness of pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer composites (FRP). Channels and I-sections were tested using a simple set-up, which was develo ...

The span limits of two glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bridge concepts involving GFRP-balsa sandwich plates are discussed. The sandwich plates were either used directly as slab bridges or as decks of a hybrid sandwich-steel girder bridges. In the lat ...

The structural behavior of GFRP-polyurethane (PUR) web-core sandwich structures subjected to sustained loading was investigated. As a basis, a study of the mechanical behavior of rigid PUR foams used as core materials was conducted, with emphasis on creep. ...

Direct load transmission experiments on hybrid short-span beam specimens for a novel bridge deck were performed. The sandwich construction consists of three layers: a fiber- reinforced polymer composite (FRP) sheet with T-upstands for the bottom skin, ligh ...

In view of the low structural efficiency of bolted joints in pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) profiles with mainly unidirectional (UD) fiber architecture, off-axis plies were considered as an effective way to improve bolted joint performance. An ex ...

The fatigue behavior of adhesively-bonded pultruded GFRP joints subjected to variable amplitude loading patterns was experimentally investigated. The failure mode of the examined joints was found to be similar to that under constant amplitude loading. The ...

The two-dimensional (2D) debonding behavior of GFRP/balsa sandwich panels presenting embedded circular disbonds at the face sheet/core interface was experimentally investigated. The bottom of the panels was fixed and out-of-plane quasi-static tensile loads ...

In the field of timber engineering, adhesive bonding remains a promising, though poorly developed, joining technique that may increase the structural stiffness and capacity of timber joints and structures. Selecting ductile adhesives may further allow to c ...

The effect of load interruptions on the fatigue behavior of (±45)2s angle-ply glass/epoxy composite laminates was investigated in this work. Constant amplitude fatigue experiments were performed at different stress levels to derive base line fatigue data. ...

The constant amplitude fatigue behavior of adhesively bonded pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer double-lap joints were modeled by a number of conceptually different phenomenological SN (cyclic stress vs. number of cycle) formulations. An extended dat ...

The special issue of the Construction and Building Materials journal has 14 papers covering a spectrum of studies from leading researchers the world over into the ductility characteristics of structural components or structures incorporating FRPs (fiber re ...

In this study, an experimental campaign was conducted to characterize the length effect on the elasticity and tensile strength of clear spruce wood parallel to the grain direction. Four groups of specimens of different lengths, cut from the same log, were tested under the same conditions under longitudinal tensile loading. The cross-sectional area of the specimens was selected as being constant and sufficiently small to exclude the effect of variations of the properties in the transverse direction. Local de

An experimental study of full-scale reinforced concrete flat slabs crosswise strengthened with prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps against punching shear was performed. The effects of two strap anchoring systems and of slab thickness ...

The effect of cyclic loading interruption on the fatigue behavior of angle-ply (±45)2S glass/epoxy composite laminates was investigated by comparing the obtained results of continuous- and interrupted loading patterns. Continuous fatigue experiments were p ...
