Controlling the static and dynamic properties of sports equipment has since long been of great concern in the sports engineering industry. More recently there has been interest in better understanding and improving the interplay between such properties and ...

The integration of shear-thickening fluids (STFs) into composite structures has been investigated with the aim of tuning part stiffness and damping capacity under dynamic deformation. Results from oscillatory rheological measurements for a STF based on con ...

The present work investigates the mechanical integrity of multilayer films developed for flexible displays. The layers comprise tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) conductive coatings and alumina barrier coatings sputtered onto high temperature aromatic polyesters. The onset strain for tensile failure and related cohesive strength of the coatings, and their adhesion to the polymer substrate, are analyzed by means of bending tests and fragmentation tests. The former test enables accurate electrical resistivity meas

The aim of the present research has been to quantify the influence of different materials on the global dynamic response of a ski. The properties of the individual constituent materials were characterized as a function of temperature and frequency using dy ...

Shear thickening fluids (STF) demonstrate the ability to simultaneously stiffen and increase their damping capacity above a critical shear strain, which depends on the particle concentration and aspect ratio in the STF. The present work considers two types ...

The dynamic shear-thickening behavior of concentrated colloidal suspensions of fumed silica in polypropylene glycol has been investigated. Dynamic frequency sweeps showed that, for any given solids concentration, the complex viscosity at different imposed ...

Flexural and torsional rigidity are important properties of skis. However, the flexural and torsional rigidity that lead to optimal performance remain to be established. In the present study, four pairs of slalom skis that differed in flexural and torsiona ...

Wooden racket paddles were modified with rubber and carbon fibre laminates and their differences tested in terms of flexural, damping, and coefficient of restitution properties. Four rackets types were designed: a wood reference, wood with rubber, carbon f ...

The invention relates in particular to a method to process composite structures with tailored stiffness and damping performance incorporating a smart material, namely a shear thickening fluid (STF), preferably at the interface between two elements belongin ...
