When generating in-silico clinical electrophysiological outputs, such as electrocardiograms (ECGs) and body surface potential maps (BSPMs), mathematical models have relied on single physics, i.e. of the cardiac electrophysiology (EP), neglecting the role o ...

In the context of cardiac electrophysiology, we propose a novel computational approach to highlight and explain the long-debated mechanisms behind atrial fibrillation (AF) and to reliably numerically predict its induction and sustainment. A key role is pla ...

Cardiovascular diseases have a major impact in Western countries. Mathematical models and numerical simulations can help the understanding of physiological and pathological processes, complementing the information provided to medical doctors by medical imaging and other non-invasive means, and opening the possibility of a better diagnosis and more in-depth surgical planning. This book offers a mathematically sound and up-to-date foundation to the training of researchers, and serves as a useful reference for

We provide a computational comparison of the performance of stentless and stented aortic prostheses, in terms of aortic root displacements and internal stresses. To this aim, we consider three real patients; for each of them, we draw the two prostheses con ...

We consider a heterogeneous model for the dynamics of a blood solute both in the vascular lumen and inside the arterial wall. In the lumen, we consider an advection-diffusion equation, where the convective field is provided by the velocity of blood, which is in turn obtained by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. Inside the arterial wall we consider a pure diffusive dynamics. Since the endothelial layer at the interface between the lumen and the wall acts as a permeable membrane, whose permeability depends

The set of solutions of a parameter-dependent linear partial differential equation with smooth coefficients typically forms a compact manifold in a Hilbert space. In this paper we review the generalized reduced basis method as a fast computational tool for the uniform approximation of the solution manifold. We focus on operators showing an affine parametric dependence, expressed as a linear combination of parameter-independent operators through some smooth, parameter-dependent scalar functions. In the case

Coronary artery disease, caused by the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary vessel wall, is one of the leading causes of death in the world. For high-risk patients, coronary artery bypass graft is the preferred treatment. Despite overall exce ...

We consider the numerical simulation of integrated heart models for the study of the cardiac functioning with particular emphasis on the coupling of the muscle contraction, the fluid dynamics of the left ventricle, and the interaction with the valves. We a ...

Cylindrical containers agitated by orbital shaking are being developed as simple and cost-effective bioreactor systems for the cultivation of mammalian cells. Here the oxygen transfer capacities of containers with nominal volumes from 50 mL to 2000 L were ...

he reduced basis (RB) methods are proposed here for the solution of parametrized equations in linear elasticity problems. The fundamental idea underlying RB methods is to decouple the generation and projection stages (offline/online computational procedure ...

The COVID-19 epidemic is the latest in a long list of pandemics that have affected humankind in the last century. In this paper, we propose a novel mathematical epidemiological model named SUIHTER from the names of the seven compartments that it comprises: ...

We present a loosely coupled scheme for the numerical simulation of the cardiac electrofluid-structure interaction problem, whose solution is typically computationally intensive due to the need to suitably treat the coupling of the different submodels. Our ...

To evaluate the differences between non-circular shape of FloWatch®-PAB and conventional pulmonary artery (PA) banding. Methods: Geometrical analysis. Conventional banding and FloWatch®-PAB perimeters were plotted against cross-sections. Computational flui ...

The aim of this work is to propose and analyse a new high-order discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the time integration of a Cauchy problem for second-order ordinary differential equations. These equations typically arise after space semidisc ...

We consider Isogeometric Analysis in the framework of the Galerkin method for the spatial approximation of cardiac electrophysiology models defined on NURBS surfaces; specifically, we perform a numerical comparison between basis functions of degree p >= 1 ...

A Fluid–Structure Interaction (FSI) problem can be reinterpreted as a heterogeneous problem with two subdomains. It is possible to describe the coupled problem at the interface between the fluid and the structure, yielding a nonlinear Steklov–Poincaré problem. The linear system can be linearized by Newton iterations on the interface and the resulting linear problem can be solved by the preconditioned GMRES method. In this work we investigate the behavior of preconditioners of Neumann–Neumann and Dirichlet–N

This review paper addresses the so called geometric multiscale approach for the numerical simulation of blood flow problems, from its origin (that we can collocate in the second half of ’90s) to our days. By this approach the blood fluid-dynamics in the whole circulatory system is described mathematically by means of heterogeneous problems featuring different degree of detail and different geometric dimension that interact together through appropriate interface coupling conditions. Our review starts with th

The numerical simulation of free-surface flows around sailing boats is a complex topic that addresses multiple mathematical tasks: the correct study of the flow field around a rigid hull, the numerical simulation of the hull dynamics, the deformation of th ...

In this work a reduced-order computational framework for the study of haemodynamics in three-dimensional patient-specific configurations of coronary artery bypass grafts dealing with a wide range of scenarios is proposed. We combine several efficient algorithms to face at the same time both the geometrical complexity involved in the description of the vascular network and the huge computational cost entailed by time dependent patient-specific flow simulations. Medical imaging procedures allow to reconstruct

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an important tool for the simulation of the cardiovascular function and dysfunction. Due to the complexity of the anatomy, the transitional regime of blood flow in the heart, and the strong mutual influence between the ...
