We propose a multiplicative specification of a discrete choice model that renders choice probabilities independent of the scale of the utility. The model outperforms the classical additive formulation over a range of data sets.

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructure is becoming critical in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing pedestrian demand. This is particularly true for train stations as in many dense cities space i ...

Significant shares of regional passenger railway still rely on pollutive diesel vehicles. Alstom, Bombardier, Siemens, and Stadler have reacted and recently announced Battery Electric and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (BEVs and FCEVs). In this paper, we anal ...

We propose a probabilistic modeling approach to represent the speed-density relationship of pedestrian traffic. The approach is data-driven, and it is motivated by the presence of high scatter in the raw data that we have analyzed. We show the validity of ...

This paper focuses on the application of tractable route choice models and presents a set of methods for deriving relevant disaggregate and aggregate route choice indicators, namely link and route flows. Tractability is achieved at the disaggregate level b ...

Transportation and mobility service providers face challenges when designing their services to ensure that resources align with demand effectively. To address this problem, one approach is to integrate individual preferences directly into operational decis ...

Pedestrian mobility is at the center of urban transportation systems. Therefore, understanding it is a necessary task to improve the mobility in cities. However, pedestrian mobility is extremely complex, and advance methods are needed to capture its dynami ...

Smartphones have the capability of recording various kinds of data from built-in sensors such as GPS in a non-intrusive, systematic way. In transportation studies, such as route choice modeling, the discrete sequences of GPS data need to be associated with ...

A system is presented to detect and match any objects with mobile cameras collaborating with fixed cameras observing the same scene. No training data is needed. Various object descriptors are studied based on grids of region descriptors. Region descriptors ...

We investigate how customers respond to an opaque airline product offered by a European carrier. In this opaque product design, customers are randomly assigned to travel to one of approximately ten destinations; however, for a fee they may exclude one or m ...

The estimation and validation of pedestrian behavioral models requires large amounts of detailed and appropriate data, the collection of which is a costly and time-consuming undertaking. The identification and design of an appropriate data collection method therefore is of great importance, which, however, is an arduous and itself time-consuming task. This article describes a software laboratory that facilitates the design of pedestrian data collection campaigns.

This paper considers vessel scheduling with pilotage and tugging constraints in berthing operations with channel restrictions at seaports. To our knowledge, pilotage and tugging requirements have not been simultaneously considered in the literature. This w ...

CATS is a collaborative European project promoting driverless vehicles that ended in December 2014. This contribution explains how the project evolved, including the handling of unexpected events and concentrating on lessons learned. The constructor and ve ...

Social Engagement is a novel business model transforming final users of a service from passive into active components. In this framework, people are contacted by a company and they are asked to perform tasks in exchange for a reward. This arises the compli ...

We present a new approach for modeling and analyzing route choice behavior. It is motivated by the need to reduce the complexity of the state-of-the-art choice models. It is inspired by the simplifications done by the travelers, using representations of th ...

Classification methods from machine learning are receiving a lot of attention in the transportation modelling community. This is motivated by the access to large databases, and to various success stories reported in this research community. Discrete choice ...

Oligopolistic competition occurs in various transportation markets. In this paper, we introduce a framework to find approximate equilibrium solutions of oligopolistic markets in which demand is modeled at the disaggregate level using discrete choice models ...
