In this paper we show that individual attitudes of road carriers and their latent preferences toward specific freight service attributes do play a role in determining their mode choices. Specifically, we contribute to the empirical literature on freight ag ...

Facial expressions are probably the most visual method to convey emotions and one of the most powerful means to relate to each other. A typical automatic system for the recognition of facial expressions is based on a representation of the expression, learned from a training set of pre-selected meaningful features. The learning process relies on the labels associated by an expert or a group of experts to the training samples. The experts are asked to associate each images in the training set to one of the ex

Over the last years, international sea-freight container transportation has grown dramatically and container terminals play nowadays a key-role in the global shipping network. The increased competitiveness among terminals requires more and more efficiency in container operations, both along the quayside and within the yard, in order to minimize ships turnaround time. Operations research methods and techniques are therefore worth being used in optimizing terminal operations. In this work, we first give an ov

This paper develops a framework for understanding pedestrian mobility pattern from WiFi traces and other data sources. It can be used to forecast demand for pedestrian facilities such as railway stations, music festivals, campus, airports, supermarkets or ...

Machine Learning (ML) approaches are increasingly being investigated as an alternative to Random Utility Models (RUMs) for modelling passenger mode choice. These approaches have the potential to provide valuable insights into choice modelling research ques ...

Car ownership and usage can vary importantly across years due to various factors, such as the introduction of new governmental policies, changes in the available technologies or variations of the market features. In order to explain and predict these changes, appropriate demand models are needed. Cars are durable goods and households account for that aspect when making an acquisition. In this research we present a dynamic discrete-continuous choice model (DDCCM) of car ownership, usage and fuel type in Swed

This paper presents a finite capacity queueing network model to evaluate congestion in protein synthesis networks. These networks are modeled as single server bufferless queues in a tandem topology. The model approximates the marginal stationary distributions of each queue. It consists of a system of linear and quadratic equations that can be decoupled. It is therefore a tractable and scalable method that is suitable for large-scale networks. This model proposes a detailed state space formulation, which pro

This research investigates the measurement of perceptions by means of adjectives freely reported by respondents in semi-open questions. It involved the use of semi-open responses of 1'763 Swiss individuals to develop indicators for a latent variable repres ...

Even though rail transportation is one of the most fuel efficient forms of surface transportation, fueling costs are the single highest operating cost head for railroad companies. For larger companies with several thousands of miles of rail network, the fuel costs often run into several billions of dollars annually. The railroad fueling problem considered in this paper has three distinct cost components. Fueling stations usually charge a location dependent price for the fuel in addition to a fixed contracti

Car sharing systems (CSSs) are one of the environmentally beneficial solutions in urban transportation. However, the operators still struggle to make these systems profitable. One of the main contributors in operational cost is rebalancing operations. Ther ...

Detecting that pedestrians are present in front of a vehicle is highly desirable to avoid dangerous traffic situations. A novel vision-based system is presented to automatically detect far-away pedestrians with low-resolution cameras mounted in vehicles gi ...

In this research we study the berth allocation problem (BAP) in real time as disruptions occur. In practice, the actual arrival times and handling times of the vessels deviate from their expected or estimated values, which can disrupt the original berthing plan and potentially make it infeasible. We consider a given baseline berthing schedule, and solve the BAP on a rolling planning horizon with the objective to minimize the total realized costs of the updated berthing schedule as the actual arrival and han

A macroscopic loading model applicable to time-dependent and congested pedestrian flows in public walking areas is proposed. Building on the continuum theory of pedestrian flows and the cell transmission model for car traffic, an isotropic framework is dev ...

In this paper we present methodologies for improving the demand-responsiveness of air transportation systems. The main ingredients are the flexibility in transportation capacity provided by an innovative aircraft and an integrated model where supply-demand interactions are explicitly formulated. The integrated model benefits from the simultaneous schedule planning and revenue management decisions. The schedule planning consists of schedule design and fleet assignment models. Revenue management decisions are

We present and analyze a new aggregate model of urban traffic. The objective is to analytically capture the correlation between the different components of the network while maintaining a tractable model that can be used in an optimization framework. Existing analytical queueing models for urban networks are formulated for a single intersection, and thus do no take into account the interactions among upstream and downstream roads. We formulate a model that considers a set of intersections and captures the c

Over the last years, international sea freight container transportation has grown dramatically and container terminals play nowadays a key role within the global shipping network. International sea-freight container transportation has grown dramatically over the last years and container terminals represent nowadays a key actor in the global shipping network. Terminal managers have to face with an increasing competitiveness among terminals, which require more and more efficiency in container operations both along the quayside and within the yard: the objective is usually to minimize ships turnaround time, one of the main indicators of the terminal performance for the shipping companie

Discrete choice models are the state-of-the-art for the mathematical modelling of demand. Based on the concept of random utility, they are able to predict the choice behavior of individuals. However, these models are highly non linear and non convex in the variables of interest, and therefore difficult to be included in mixed linear optimization models. These models are of great importance in transportation revenue management systems. In this research, we propose a new mathematical modeling framework to inc

The integration of discrete choice models in Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) models provides a better understanding of the preferences of the customers to the operators while planning for their systems. However, the formulations associated with choice models are highly nonlinear and non convex. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose a linear formulation of a general discrete choice model that can be embedded in any MILP formulation by relying on simulation. We characterize a demand-based b
