We present a method that exploits an information theoretic framework to extract optimized audio features using the video information. A simple measure of mutual information (MI) between the resulting audio features and the video ones allows to detect the active speaker among different candidates. Our method involves the optimization of an MI-based objective function. No approximation is introduced to solve this optimization problem, neither concerning the estimation of the probability density functions (pdf

Background: Computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) systems can enhance the objectivity of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), which is widely used in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for cervical cancer detection. VIA's reliance on subj ...

In this paper, we propose a new variational model to segment an object belonging to a given shape space using the active contour method, a geometric shape prior and the Mumford-Shah functional. The core of our model is an energy functional composed by thre ...

Objectives This study introduced a tailored MP2RAGE-based brain acquisition for a comprehensive assessment of the normal maturing brain. Methods Seventy normal patients (35 girls and 35 boys) from 1 to 16 years of age were recruited within a prospective mo ...

Speed-of-sound pulse-echo imaging denotes a set of promising techniques able to expand the diagnostic capabilities of medical ultrasound. Their objective is to recover a speed-of-sound map of soft tissue and use it as a biomarker for diseases that are difficult to detect using standard B-mode imaging. Such methods often rely on a specific linear operator based on straight-ray approximation to compute the local wave propagation time. Refraction effects are thus neglected, leading to potential artifacts in th

Windows play a vital role in occupants’ well-being, yet quantitative methods for analysing how people interact with window views remain limited. This paper introduces a novel computer-vision framework for assessing both movement and gaze dynamics in window views. First, we analyse real-time eye-tracking data from 84 participants viewing 35 high-resolution window-view recordings, revealing a clear hierarchy of attention drivers: semantic and social objects dominate viewing patterns (57.3% importance), follow

Thanks to its capability of acquiring full-view frames at multiple kilohertz, ultrafast ultrasound imaging unlocked the analysis of rapidly changing physical phenomena in the human body, with pioneering applications such as ultrasensitive flow imaging in t ...

Whether signals from different sensory modalities converge and interact within primary cortices in humans is unresolved, despite emerging evidence in animals. This is partially because of debates concerning the appropriate analyses of functional magnetic r ...

Computed Tomography (CT) represents the standard imaging modality for tumor volume delineation for radiotherapy treatment planning of retinoblastoma despite some inherent limitations. CT scan is very useful in providing information on physical density for dose calculation and morphological volumetric information but presents a low sensitivity in assessing the tumor viability. On the other hand, 3D ultrasound (US) allows a highly accurate definition of the tumor volume thanks to its high spatial resolution b

In this work we present a method for the image analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of fetuses. Our goal is to segment the brain surface from multiple volumes (axial, coronal and sagittal acquisitions) of a fetus. To this end we propose a two-step ...

As distribution shifts are inescapable in realistic clinical scenarios due to inconsistencies in imaging protocols, scanner vendors, and across different centers, well-trained deep models incur a domain generalization problem in unseen environments. Despit ...

There is a strong incentive to develop computational pathology models to i) ease the burden of tissue typology annotation from whole slide histological images; ii) transfer knowledge, e.g., tissue class separability from the withheld source domain to the distributionally shifted unlabeled target domain, and simultaneously iii) detect Open Set samples, i.e., unseen novel categories not present in the training source domain. This paper proposes a highly practical setting by addressing the abovementioned chall

In this paper we aim to explore what is the most appropriate number of data samples needed when measuring the temporal correspondence between a chosen set of video and audio cues in a given audio-visual sequence. Presently the optimal model that connects statistics of audio and video signals does not exist since one does not know the most appropriate features to be extracted in order to analyze their correlation. Previous approaches assumed simple parametric and non-parametric models for the joint distribut

In this paper we define a scale-space for cortical mean curvature maps on the sphere, that offers a hierarchical representation of the cortical structures, useful in multi-scale algorithms. A spherical feature map is obtained through inflation of the cortical surface of one hemisphere. Using the Beltrami framework, we embed this spherical mesh in a higher dimensional space and the feature assigned to a mesh vertex becomes an additional component of its coordinates. This enhanced mesh then evolves under Belt

Constrained Spherical Deconvolution (CSD) is widely used to estimate the white matter fiber orientation distribution (FOD) from diffusion MRI data. Its angular resolution depends on the maximum spherical harmonic order (lmax): low lmax yields smooth but poorly resolved FODs, while high lmax, as in Super-CSD, enables resolving fiber crossings with small inter-fiber angles but increases sensitivity to noise. In this proof-of-concept study, we introduce Spatially Regularized Su

OBJECTIVE The tremor circuitry has commonly been hypothesized to be driven by one or multiple pacemakers within the cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathway, including the cerebellum, contralateral motor thalamus, and primary motor cortex. However, previous stud ...

Understanding the large-scale structural network formed by neurons is a major challenge in system neuroscience. A detailed connectivity map covering the entire brain would therefore be of great value. Based on diffusion MRI, we propose an efficient methodo ...

Segmenting ultrasound images is a challenging problem where standard unsupervised segmentation methods such as the well-known Chan-Vese method fail. We propose in this paper an efficient segmentation method for this class of images. Our proposed algorithm ...

Phase correction (PC) is a preprocessing technique that exploits the phase of images acquired in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to obtain real-valued images containing tissue contrast with additive Gaussian noise, as opposed to magnitude images which fol ...

Early identification of drug toxicity is essential yet challenging in drug development. At the preclinical stage, toxicity is assessed with histopathological examination of tissue sections from animal models to detect morphological lesions. To complement this analysis, toxicogenomics is increasingly employed to understand the mechanism of action of the compound and ultimately identify lesion-specific safety biomarkers for which in vitro assays can be designed. However, existing works that aim to identify mo
