In this article we present a novel approach for diffusion MRI global tractography. Our formulation models the signal in each voxel as a linear combination of fiber-tract basis func- tions, which consist of a comprehensive set of plausible fiber tracts that ...

Motivation: This work addresses the sampling bias related to voxel size and boundary conditions in DW-MRI Monte-Carlo simulations. Goal(s): The study aims to understand how voxel-size and boundary-conditions influence Monte-Carlo simulations in DW-MRI to ensure convergence and minimise errors. Approach: It uses simulations with realistic synthetic white-matter substrates and calculates diffusion propagators and apparent diffusion coefficients to measure simulation accuracy. Results: It underscores the signi

MRI has evolved into an important diagnostic technique in medical imaging. However, reliability of the derived diagnosis can be degraded by artifacts, which challenge both radiologists and automatic computer-aided diagnosis. This work proposes a fully-auto ...

Attribute guided face image synthesis aims to manipulate attributes on a face image. Most existing methods for image-to-image translation can either perform a fixed translation between any two image domains using a single attribute or require training data ...

Face detection in images or video sequences is a very challenging problem. It has a wide range of applications but at the same time it presents a great number of difficulties, since faces are non-rigid and very changeable objects that can adopt a lot of different poses and with a high inter and intra-person variation and a high sensitivity to lighting conditions. Along this document, a new approach to the face detection and pose estimation problem is given. This approach is based on the method proposed by V

Children born prematurely are at high risk for long-term abnormal development, including deficits in attentional abilities that persist throughout adolescence. The severity of these cognitive difficulties varies significantly among preterm-born children, w ...

Facial expression recognition by human observers is affected by subjective components. Indeed there is no ground truth. We have developped Discrete Choice Models to capture the human perception of facial expressions. In a first step, the static case is treated, that is modelling perception of facial images. Image information is extracted using a computer vision tool called Active Appearance model (AAM). DCMs attributes are based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), Expressions Descriptive Units (EDU)

This paper presents a new non parametric atlas registration framework, derived from the optical flow model and the active contour theory, applied to automatic subthalamic nucleus (STN) targeting in deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. In a previous work, ...

Manually segmenting multiple sclerosis (MS) cortical lesions (CLs) is extremely time consuming, and past studies have shown only moderate inter-rater reliability. To accelerate this task, we developed a deep-learning-based framework (CLAIMS: Cortical Lesio ...

Automatic facial action unit (AU) detection in videos is the key ingredient to all systems that utilize a subject face for either interaction or analysis purposes. With the ever growing range of possible applications, achieving a high accuracy in the simpl ...

Gaze movements play a crucial role in human-computer interaction (HCI) applications. Recently, gaze tracking systems with a wide variety of applications have attracted much interest by the industry as well as the scientific community. The state-of-the-art ...

There has been a recent surge in methods targeting the recovery of a speed-of-sound map from pulse-echo ultrasound measurements. We focused in this work on a particular technique and identified a drawback shared by similar methods - namely the necessity of ...

Axon radius is a potential biomarker for brain diseases and a crucial tissue microstructure parameter that determines the speed of action potentials. Diffusion MRI (dMRI) allows non-invasive estimation of axon radius, but accurately estimating the radius o ...

Recent state-of-the-art methods for skin lesion segmentation are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Even though these CNN-based segmentation approaches are accurate, they are computationally expensive. In this paper, we address this problem and ...

We propose a novel compressed sensing technique to accelerate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition process. The method, coined spread spectrum MRI or simply s2MRI, consists of pre-modulating the signal of interest by a linear chirp before rando ...

This work addresses the problem of tracking, in real video sequences, the global motion of an infant face as well as the local motion of its inner features. This is a challenging task in Computer Vision field, because of the variability of facial appearance within a video sequence, most notably due to changes in head pose, expressions, lighting or occlusions. Thus, much research has been devoted to the problem of face tracking, as a specially difficult case of non-rigid object tracking. This task requires,

In this paper, we propose a general framework for fusing bottom-up segmentation with top-down object behavior inference over an image sequence. This approach is beneficial for both tasks, since it enables them to cooperate so that knowledge relevant to eac ...

Regularization, filtering, and denoising of biomedical images requires the use of appropriate filters and the adoption of efficient regularization criteria. It has been shown that the Stein’s Unbiased Risk Estimate (SURE) can be used as a proxy for the mean squared error (MSE), thus giving an effective criterion for choosing the regularization amount as to that minimizing SURE. Often, due to the complexity of the adopted filters and solvers, this proxy must be calculated with a Monte Carlo method. In practi

Monitoring the attentive and emotional status of the driver is critical for the safety and comfort of driving. In this work a real-time non-intrusive monitoring system is developed, which detects the emotional states of the driver by analyzing facial expre ...

This paper presents the segmentation of bilateral parotid glands in the Head and Neck (H&N) CT images using an active contour based atlas registration. We compare segmentation results from three atlas selection strategies: (i) selection of “single-most-sim ...
