Background. The small characteristic sizes (in the range of 102 - 103 μm) of Microstructured reactors (MSR) lead to very high specific interfacial area which, in turn, increases heat- and mass transfer efficiency. However, for quasi instantaneous exothermic reactions, the overall reaction kinetics in MSR is strongly influenced by mixing. The characteristic time of the latter phenomenon varies from millisecond to seconds depending on the operating conditions used. If mixing is the rate determining step for h

Information transmission through multimode fibers (MMFs) has been a topic of great interest for many years. Deep learning algorithms have been applied successfully to MMFs in particular to fiber endoscopy. In this work, we show how Deep Neural Networks (DN ...

The time-averaged two-phase flow heat transfer coefficients were determined with a very fine resolution based on infra-red (IR) temperature measurements conducted over a 1 cm(2) heated area of a multi-micro-, channel evaporator. This experimental investiga ...

The output of physical systems, such as the scrambled pattern formed by shining the spot of a laser pointer through fog, is often easily accessible by direct measurements. However, selection of the input of such a system to obtain a desired output is diffi ...

Experimental and numerical studies are performed to characterise the dynamics of isolated confined air bubbles in laminar fully developed liquid flows within channels of diameters d = 0.5 mm and d = 1 mm. Water and glycerol are used as the continuous liqui ...

Two-phase flow boiling of R245fa, R236fa, and R1234ze(E) in 100 × 100 μm2 parallel microchannels for cooling of future 3D-ICs has been investigated. Significant flow instabilities, back flow, and non-uniform flow distribution among the channels were observ ...

We propose a computational method for controlling the output of a multimode fiber using machine learning. Arbitrary images can be projected with amplitude-only calibration (no phase measurement) and fidelities on par with conventional full-measurement meth ...

The present study focuses on an experimental investigation of two-phase flow boiling in a silicon multi-microchannel evaporator, which emulates a single layer of a 3D stacked computer chip. The micro-evaporator is comprised of 67 parallel channels, each ha ...

The present invention is related to an endoscopic system for phase imaging, comprising a multicore waveguide (080), an optical system comprising at least one first light source (002), for illuminating the sample to be examined, a first camera (010) that is ...

Spatiotemporal nonlinear interactions in multimode fibers are of interest for beam shaping and frequency conversion by exploiting the nonlinear interaction of different pump modes from quasi-continuous wave to ultrashort pulses centered around visible to i ...

The current paper presents new operational maps for several different multi-microchannel evaporators, with and without any inlet restrictions (micro-orifices), for the two-phase flow of refrigerants R245fa, R236fa, and R1234ze(E). The test fluids flowed in ...

This study focuses on the application of infra-red thermography to visualise the heat transfer dynamics of diabatic flows in multi-microchannels etched into silicon wafers. The 100 parallel channels were 50 micron wide, 100 microns deep, and with a pitch of 50 microns. The length of the channels was 10mm, and was limited by transverse inlet and outlet slits. A copper manifold was used to provide and remove fluid from the test section. This manifold was also designed to provide optical access to both the top

Image delivery through multimode fibers (MMFs) suffers from modal scrambling which results in a speckle pattern at the fiber output. In this work, we use Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for recovery and/or classification of the input image from the intensity-o ...

The intensification of fast exothermic reactions can be achieved by using microstructured reactors (MSR) which provide improved mass & heat transfer rates leading to higher overall reaction kinetics. But for highly exothermic reactions the heat evacuation becomes not efficient enough and unwanted hot spots are formed. In this study, first the mixing in MSR is quantified for different geometries and then temperature profiles are measured using a novel quantitative IR-thermometry method. The results are fitte
