If process modelling is a well known approach to compute the performances of fuel cell systems, the optimal design of systems where the process configuration is not fixed a priori remains an issue. The goal of the presented methodology for integrating and optimising fuel cell systems is to help in this preliminary design step. The thermo-economic model developed includes three parts : 1) the energy flow model that represent the thermodynamic performances of the chemical and energy conversions in the physica

In the context of stationary power generation, fuel cell-based systems are being foreseen as a valuable alternative to thermodynamic cycle-based power plants, especially in small scale applications. As the technology is not yet established, many aspects of fuel cell devel- opment are currently investigated worldwide. Part of the research focuses on integrating the fuel cell in a system that is both efficient and economically attractive. To address this problem, we present in this paper a thermo-economic opt

Large scale power production benefits from the high efficiency of gas-steam combined cycles. In the lower power range, fuel cells are a good candidate to combine with gas turbines. Such systems can achieve efficiencies exceeding 60%. High temperature Solid ...

This paper addresses the problem of modeling and estimating the cost of the heat exchanger network (HEN) in multi-period operation using pinch technique concepts. The developed method improves the vertical heat exchanges technique originally proposed by Ah ...

Fuel cell systems integrate the fuel cell technology with fuel processing and post processing. A thermo-economic optimization method has been developed to systematically generate the most attractive configurations of the integrated system. In the developed ...

OSMOSE is a platform for the study and design of complex integrated energy systems. The software is developed in the Laboratory for Industrial Energy Systems (LENI) in the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland. The project is motivated by the need of a fexible and performant research tool to study and design energy systems. In this perspective, the general scope of the software is to help the user to develop and compute technology models that combine (a) thermodynamic comput

The aim of this project was to develop and implement an optimisation methodology that combines process thermo-modelling and process integration in a thermo-economic optimisation framework for fuel cells systems. During this project, a generic software has been developed to perform optimisation of integated energy systems. OSMOSE stands for “OptimiSation MultiObjectif de Systemes Energétiques intégrés” (MultiObjective Optimisation of Integrated Energy Systems). The developed approach and software have been u

Background: The electricity production market benefits from combined cycles with their high efficiency. In the lower power range, Fuel Cells are a good candidate to combine with gas turbines. Such systems can achieve efficiencies of 60% and more. High tem ...
