The transverse permeability of roving/tow-based fiber reinforcement is of great importance for accurate flow modeling in the pultrusion process. This study proposes an experimental approach to characterize the roving-based fiber beds' permeability under di ...

In the context of the preservation of natural resources, researchers show a growing interest in developing eco-friendly materials based on recycled polymers and natural fiber biocomposites to minimize plastic and agroindustrial waste pollution. The develop ...

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in shortages of personal protective equipment and medical devices in the initial phase. Agile small and medium-sized enterprises from regional textile industries reacted quickly. They delivered alternative products such as te ...

Three different J-integral formulations to derive the experimental translaminar toughness of composites from compact tension tests with a large-scale fracture process zone are implemented and discussed. They improve the existing approaches by taking advant ...

The relative sequence of shrinkage and evolution of modulus of a thermoset resin during cure leads to the build-up of internal stresses, especially if the resin is constrained by the presence of other materials in the form of a substrate or reinforcing fibers. To enable prediction of the levels of internal stress generated during processing and to determine appropriate processing windows, the evolution of the modulus of an epoxy-amine system during cure has been characterized and described with a phenomenol

In 2009, l’Hydroptère broke the symbolic barrier of 50 knots and became the world fastest sailing boat over both 500 meters and 1 nautical mile. This major achievement relied on the high skills of the sailing team but also on technical advances of the boat, resulting from the scientific collaboration between the Hydroptère Design Team and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In the present article, we highlight the multidisciplinary research activity performed within EPFL in the course of th

The fundamentals of flow in the liquid composite moulding (LCM) processes are reviewed with an emphasis on multiphase flow effects considering the dual-scale thin porous media constituted by the textiles, and the dynamic wetting effects observed with visco ...

Concentrated colloidal suspensions of silica particles in polyethylene glycol exhibit a shear thickening behavior: above a critical shear rate in a confined environment, they show a steep increase of viscosity. This reversible transition from a low to a hi ...

This article introduces the concept of preforms and preforming. A preform is defined as an assembly of yarns or textiles, which is generally stabilized by introduction of additional material, yarns or a binder powder. We first provide a brief review of textile forms and processes and then introduce the various preforming techniques, from 2D textiles or directly from the individual yarns. We finally address technical and scientific issues, including the mechanical behavior of the textile during preforming, a

Healing of epoxy resins can be accomplished using a combination of embedded ethyl phenylacetate (EPA) solvent loaded capsules and shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. Upon crack formation, the EPA solvent diffuses in the resin and induces swelling which tends t ...

All three classes of fibre reinforced composite materials (polymer, metal and ceramic matrix) may be produced by flow of liquid matrix into the open spaces left within pores of a fibre preform. Even though several specific issues arise from the nature of each composite matrix class, governing phenomena apply to all infiltration processes, and include in particular: (i) capillary phenomena, (ii) transport phenomena, and (iii) the mechanics of potential fibre preform deformation. These phenomena and their gov

This article investigates the effects of voids, joint geometry, and test conditions on the quasi-static Mode I fracture performance of thick adhesive Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) joints such as those prevailing in wind industry and shipbuilding. The specim ...

Capillary pressures encountered in composite processing are often evaluated by measuring infiltration rates as a function of applied pressure. Such data are generally interpreted assuming slug-flow. Using the Brooks-Corey correlations we relax this assumpt ...

This article reports modeling techniques and results based on experimental Mode I characterization of a layered woven GFRP material with tufting reinforcement. Standard tuft and loop-less geometries are investigated on three different areal patterns to eva ...

This study investigates the fracture behavior of thick adhesive joints manufactured with composite adherends and bonded with an epoxy-based structural adhesive common to the wind turbine industry. For that purpose, double cantilever beam specimens with an ...

We report results on the development of an innovative fast-curing coupling method using a UV-curable epoxy primer based on a cycloaliphatic di-epoxide resin. The materials to bond are metallic wires and a thermoplastic polyurethane matrix. The curing kinet ...

Two resin transfer moulding (RTM) processes have been examined for automotive body-in-white (BIW) structures. An epoxy system was compared with a novel reactive polyamide 12 (PA12) system via characterisation of reaction kinetics and the production of carb ...

Homogeneous plane strain compression tests were performed on standard industrial GMT composites using a channel mould at 200oC. A charring and weighting technique was used to determine the fibre concentration after the compression experiments. Experimental ...

A new adhesive formulation is developed, enabling assisted self-healing for wind turbine rotor blade (WTRB) applications. The properties of this epoxy based formulation are compared to those of a state-of-the-art toughened epoxy adhesive (Sikapower (R)-830 ...

The current investigation introduces the concepts of the equivalent crack length approach for thin and thick adhesive joints. Its applicability is assessed for adhesively bonded composite and steel joints with a bondline thickness ranging from 0.4 mm to 10 ...
