In its Energy Strategy 2050, Switzerland is revising its energy perspectives with a strong focus on renewable sources of energy and in particular hydropower. In this context, the Swiss Government funded a number of competence centers for energy research (S ...

Dam safety is strongly linked to the probability of occurrence of large floods. Floods can transport large wood (LW) into reservoirs and towards water release structures as spillways. Due to blocking and clogging, LW may significantly influence the dischar ...

Within the fluvial network, confluences are considered particular areas in what concerns ecological connectivity, flood safety and water quality. These characteristics were degraded in many cases, by previous channelization works, which resulted in rivers ...

Confluences with relatively low discharge and momentum flux ratios where a small steep tributary with a high supply of poorly sorted sediment joins a large, low-gradient main channel commonly occur in nature, but they have not yet been investigated. Measurements of the three-dimensional velocity field, turbulence, sediment transport, bed material grain size and morphology are reported in a laboratory setting that is representative of confluences on the Upper Rhone River, Switzerland. The difference between

Flow velocity and sedimentation patterns were investigated experimentally and numerically in shallow rectangular reservoirs with different asymmetric locations of the inlet and outlet channels. Velocity fields were measured in the entire reservoir, both fo ...

Hydropower has a long tradition in Europe and contributed significantly during the last century to industrial development and welfare in most of the countries in Europe. The ambitious plan for an energy transition in Europe now seeks to achieve a lowcarbon ...

Gravity driven flows on inclines can be caused by cold, saline or turbid inflows into water bodies. Another example are cold downslope winds, which are caused by cooling of the atmosphere at the lower boundary. In a well-known contribution, Ellison and Tur ...

Tsunami, impulse-waves and dam-break waves afflict humanity with casualties and damages. An insight into the flow mechanisms of these waves is important to provide safety and reduce reconstruction costs. This experimental study focuses on the effect of bed ...

Due to high peak energy demands, existing hydropower plants operate nowadays under rough conditions to regulate the discharge and power with relatively fast and repeated opening and closing of turbines and pumps. The local deterioration of the mechanical properties of the steel-lined pressure wall induces a change of the two global indicators: the water-hammer celerity and the wave attenuation. This deterioration may arise from the weakening of the backfill concrete and/or the surrounding rock mass. In-situ

The potential failure evaluation of river embankment structures such as ripraps, resulting from erosion or over-flows during flood events, is the main issue of their stability and safety assessment. Moreover, a changed sediment transport in rivers as a possible result of climate change influences the failure risk of riprap. This bank failure can lead to uncontrolled erosion and flooding with disastrous consequences in residential areas or damage of infrastructures. Thus, probabilistic analysis of failure me

Two approaches have traditionally been used to describe the widening rate of jets and plumes: the diffusion concept of Prandtl, and the entrainment principle of Morton, Taylor and Turner. The entrainment concept is based on depth-averaged flow scales, and ...

Floodplains downstream of dams with constant residual flow discharge often lack sediment supply and periodic inundation due to the absence of flood events. At the Sarine floodplain in Fribourg, western Switzerland, an artificial flood was released from Ros ...

Résumé Dans le cadre du projet de recherche sur la sédimentation de réservoirs à faible profondeur, en particulier les sédiments en suspension, les paramètres suivants ont été étudiés: l’influence de la géométrie du réservoir sur le transport des sédiments ...

A new monitoring approach for detecting, locating, and quantifying structurally weak reaches of steel-lined pressure tunnels and shafts is presented. These reaches arise from local deterioration of the backfill concrete and the rock mass surrounding the li ...

Hydrodynamic waves are characterised by unsteady, highly turbulent and irregular behaviours. In nature, such phenomena can be observed in dam breaks, impulse waves and tsunamis. Both wet bed bores and dry bed surges were experimentally reproduced on smooth ...

Uplift of blocks from the rock mass at the bottom of plunge pools is the main process of the scouring phenomenon caused by high-velocity jet impact. Although the influence of water and rock on dynamic block ejection has been investigated, no systematic res ...

Mountain river confluences are characterized by narrow and steep tributaries that supply abundant sediment load to a main channel that, in turn, provides the dominant flow discharge. In addition, bed sediments consist of poorly sorted mixtures that promote ...

The interplay between streamwise flow, curvature-induced secondary flow, sediment transport and bed morphology leads to the formation of a typical bar-pool bed morphology in open-channel bends. The associated scour at the outer bank and deposition at the i ...

Existing riverbank riprap could face the risk of failure if the flood regime changes in future. Additionally, changed sediment transport in rivers, as a possible result of climate change, impacts the failure risk of flood protection measures. Evaluation of ...

High-head storage hydropower plants operate their turbines during periods of high energy demand. The starting and stopping of turbines results in rapid fluctuations of discharge and water levels in rivers called hydropeaking, which are unfavorable from an ecological point of view. Morphological measures might help to reduce the fluctuations by increasing the natural retention capacity of rivers. With this practical background, the experimental investigations presented in this paper focused on the determinat
