Within the fluvial network, confluences are particular areas characterized by great ecological value where flow dynamics and bed morphology are much influenced by local patterns. The aim of this article is to describe the influence of the convergence angle ...

In water supply systems there is potential for hydropower production at several scales, from small hydro to micro. The energy recovery within the urban water supply networks is a type of micro-hydro that may be useful for the control of excessive pressures ...

Recently, Jafarnejad, Franca, Pfister, and Schleiss [2017. Time-based failure analysis of compressed riverbank riprap. Journal of Hydraulic Research, 55(2), 224–235. doi: 10.1080/00221686.2016.1212940] presented an experimental study on the stability of co ...

Accurate river flow forecasting is an important asset for stream and reservoir management, being often translated into substantial social, economic and ecological gains. This contribution aims at coupling satellite rainfall estimates and machine learning t ...

One of the common measures for river bank protection is the installation of riprap. There are several methods to design riprap appropriately, which are however generally limited to dumped medium size blocks. Nevertheless, an additional resistance against e ...

The simulation of run-off in alpine catchment areas is an important issue for the optimal operation of hydropower plants for normal flow conditions, but also during flood events. A semi-lumped numerical approach combines hydrological modelling and operation of hydraulic elements. It allows simulation of operating mode of complex storage hydropower plants and its impacts on the downstream river system for different scenarios. The modelling of the upper Aare catchment with the Oberhasli hydropower scheme in S

This investigation aims at assessing the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) occurring during hydraulic transients in straight pipeline systems fixed to anchor blocks. A two mode 4-equation model is implemented incorporating the main interacting mechanisms: ...

For the highly loaded pressure tunnels and shafts that are used for the extension of storage power plants with pumped storage and to increase installed capacity, alignments of the waterway system with high overburden are of great importance from the econom ...

The sediment transport capacity of the Avançon river through the city of Bex in Switzerland is limited. During the October 2000 flood event, water levels rose to danger limits. After the flood, the river channel was completely filled with sediments, with a uniform layer thickness comprised between 1.7 and 1.8m through the village. The return period of the flood event was estimated to be around 20 years, but the amount of transported sediments was extremely high for such an event.

In this study the scour mechanism and the effect of some of the important parameters such as jet velocities, impinging jet distance from the upstream wall and tailwater depth on the longitudinal scour profile due to 3d simoultaneous wall and impinging jet are investigated experimentally. Experiments were conducted in a channel 10 m long, 1 m height and 0.57 m width. For generating jet flow, two pipes with 1 cm inside diameter and 2 m long were used. Uniform sediment with median size of 1.05 mm was used as t

Uncontrolled scour is affecting multiple mobile dams. The plunge pool of the Chancy-Pougny barrage, located on the Rhone River bordering France and Switzerland, has recently been reported to develop in a potentially unfavourable direction after almost 100 ...

Several stepped spillways have been built in recent decades, mostly integrated in the downstream faces of roller compacted concrete dams. Among them, only a few have changing bottom slopes. Comprehensive information on the effect of a slope change on the f ...

The collection of floating woody debris at flow control structures, such as spillways and weirs, can potentially result in reduced discharge efficiency (higher upstream head for a given weir discharge). Compared to less hydraulically-efficient control stru ...

In open channels, a sudden rise in water elevation generates a positive surge. Positive surges are commonly observed in man-made channels (Bazin 1865, Treske 1994) and a natural occurrence is the tidal bore in macro-tidal estuaries (Tricker 1965, Chanson 2 ...

Spillways are designed to evacuate floods in a safe way. They should safely release water in order to avoid dam overtopping with its related damages. Nevertheless, it may be dangerous to assume that a flood is only carrying “clear” water. Large woody debri ...

The present paper approaches fluid-structure interaction by means of a 4-equation model. Experimental data collected from a straight copper pipe-rig lying directly on the lab floor is used for the model validation in terms of wave shape, timing and damping ...

Nowadays, high-head power plants could increase their installed power capacity for many reasons, e.g. dam heightening, increase of their peak power capacity or refurbishment with new turbines. Frequently, due to several considerations, e.g. topographical o ...

Concurrent rehabilitation alternatives were evaluated for a 1900 m reach of the River Etsch in northern Italy using a recently developed Hydro Morphological Index of Diversity (HMID) model. HMID is a new tool enabling quantitative assessments of river rest ...

Methods to design riprap-lined channels usually refer to dumped material. Large blocks placed individually by machinery are used when more stability is required. They offer additional resistance against flow erosion since space between blocks is minimized ...

La réhabilitation des barrages existants impose généralement une augmentation de leur capacité d’évacuation en crue. Dans de nombreuses situations, le PK-Weir (Piano Key Weir) offre à cet égard une solution compacte et efficace. La conception et la réalisa ...
