In open-channel bends, interactions between streamwise flow, curvature-induced secondary flow and sediment transport lead to a typical bar-pool bed topography. Erosion occurs near the outer bank that can endanger structures, whereas deposition occurs near the inner bank that can reduce the navigable width. Laboratory experiments have been performed in a sharp open-channel bend to investigate how a bubble screen can influence the bend hydrodynamics and morphological evolution. A porous tube placed near the o

Flow conditions and sediment transport capacity in steep mountain rivers are poorly known. One of the main problems is that the presence of macro-roughness elements, such as large relatively immobile boulders, have a strong influence. Experiments carried out in a steep laboratory flume, show that the bed surface occupied by boulders and their protrusion need to be taken into account for the estimation of sediment transport. The tests were performed with a wide mobile grain size distribution and a random pos

Micro-hydropower is currently expanding as a solution to improve the efficiency of water systems by using energy excesses which are typically lost. In the particular case of water supply systems, often excessive pressure exists in zones of the network conn ...

Inland navigable waterways are significant in cargo transport and leisure activities. In parallel, these channels and rivers often suffer from the ship traffic, as the generated waves may damage waterway banks, along with their riparian fauna. As a consequ ...

A theoretical stochastic approach is presented for the structural analysis of plunge pool liners dynamically loaded by the impact of free-falling jets. Such an approach was used as the real behaviour of plunge pool liners is complex, and deterministic methods usually fail to represent the true response of the system. This general approach can easily be used in design practice, given the random characteristics of the loading. Based on the pressure fluctuations measured in the laboratory under prototype condi

Piano Key Weirs (PKWs) are an alternative to linear overflow structures, increasing the unit discharge for similar heads and spillway widths. Thus, they allow to operate reservoirs with elevated supply levels, thereby providing additional storage volume. As they are relatively novel structures, few design criteria are available. Hence, physical model tests of prototypes are required. This study describes comprehensive model tests on a sectional set-up of several A-type PKWs, in which the relevant parameters

The Upper Rhone River is located in the Swiss Alps. Several hydropower schemes with large reservoirs were built in the catchment area, strongly influencing its hydrological regime. In past decades, several floods caused disasters in the catchment area. The MINERVE project aims to improve the flood protection safety, focusing on their prediction. Furthermore, the multi-reservoir system is optimally managed to limit or avoid damages during floods. A “Decision Support Tool” called MINDS has been developed for

Bridge failure, due to local scour at bridge pier foundations, has become a critical issue in river and bridge engineering, which might lead to transportation disruption, loss of lives and economic problems. A practical solution to prevent bridge collapses ...

Improving the integration of dams in the natural environment and recovering their storage capacity lost to sedimentation are two topics of growing concern. To address these two issues, the accumulated sediments are being relocated down into the dam's tail water. This process is called sediment replenishment (SR), and has been tested in Japan and other parts of the world. More study is required to enhance its effectiveness, and the present research thus offers a practical method to assess positive outcomes o

Flow interactions with a bridge pier and movable river bed result in local scour which can endanger bridge pier foundations. This scour is initiated by the downward flow and amplified by the so-called horseshoe vortex. A new method to reduce scouring around bridge piers has been assessed with preliminary tests. A bubble screen located upstream of the pier may counteract the downward flow and avoid the initiation of scour. Laboratory experiments have been performed in a shallow flume with a physical scale mo

Interactions between curvature-induced secondary flow, streamwise flow and bed morphology in open-channel bends lead to the development of a typical bar-pool bed morphology, shaped by scour at the outer bank and deposition at the inner bank. This typical bar-pool bed morphology may endanger the stability of the outer bank or reduce the navigable width of the channel. Preliminary laboratory experiments in a sharply curved channel with a fixed horizontal bottom (Blanckaert et al. 2008) have shown that a bubbl

River widening is commonly used as a solution for the rehabilitation of rivers with the main purposes of allowing the river to adjust to its natural dynamics and to improve riparian and instream habitat for flora and fauna, by increasing the heterogeneity ...

A part of the domestic waste of the city of Geneva (Switzerland) is transported with ship convoys on the Rhone River to the waste incineration station. These convoys generate waves, which partially endangers the stability of the river banks and the riparia ...

Orifices are hydraulic devices producing pressure drops or head losses in pipes ways. Flow velocity measurements at the upstream of orifices allow understanding the effect of given flow field on head losses, while downstream measurements provide informatio ...

The authors present the results of a new experimental study to improve the flow classification in rectangular shallow reservoirs. Although previous papers have paved the way for the classification (Dewals et al. 2008, Dufresne et al. 2010), the authors are complemented for the detailed flow-field measurements conducted for a high number of reservoir geometries, complementing the previous observations based on Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (Dewals et al. 2008). The studied rectangular reservoirs hav

Steady free-surface flows around buildings occurring during flood or tsunami events can produce major damages and a quantification of the post-peak forces is essential for safety and resilience of coastal structures. The loading process is highly affected ...

Sedimentation close to dams in large and deep reservoirs is mainly related to sediment transport by turbidity currents. The state of the art regarding the management of turbidity currents is presented here, and illustrated with two case studies. Possible solutions, such as the development of physical obstacles and the evacuation of sediments from water intake structures, are proposed.

With a basin covering 1.4 million km2, the Zambezi is the fifth largest drainage basin in Africa. Bounded by the 9°S and 21°S parallels, it is home to approximately 30 million people and is officially shared by eight riparian countries. The river stretches over 2600 km across Southern Africa, from Angola in the west to Mozambique in the east, and plays a vital role in the region’s cultural identity and economy. Along the course of the Zambezi River and the main tributaries, a number of relevant features can

The mouth of the Baye de Clarens torrent in Switzerland is currently constrained by lateral training walls, sequent sills and a bridge with a low hydraulic capacity. Due to a bed load trap upstream, few sediments reach the mouth. To improve flood protectio ...
