Macrophages play key roles in inflammatory disorders. Therefore, they are targets of treatments aiming at their local destruction in inflammation sites. However, injection of low molecular mass therapeutics, including photosensitizers, in inflamed joints r ...

Conductometry and potentiometry have been employed to examine the influence of macromol. parameters and chem. structure on the electrochem. behavior of flexible polyelectrolytes with finite chain length in the concn. range 10-6 < cp < 10-2 monomol.l-1. For polyelectrolytes with charge distances below the Bjerrum length at low ionic strength the equiv. cond. increases strongly with decreasing polymer concn. Correlating this behavior with concn. regimes according to de Gennes and Odijk the strong and nearly l

Two novel types of hydrogel microspheres (MS) are presented. First, one-component microspheres (1-comMS) were produced from sodium alginate (Na-alg) equipped with thiolfunctionalized hydroxyl groups. The functionalization pathway included the conversion of ...

Analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) primarily serves to investigate hydrodynamic and thermodynamic properties of natural and synthetic macromolecules and colloids in solution, dispersion or suspension. Beside such more conventional use, AUC can support ma ...

The study of each stage of the flocculation process is essential to better understand and predict flocculation mechanisms. The adsorption of cationic polyacrylamide derivatives (C-PAM) onto precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) has been investigated systema ...

The partial molar volume, .hivin.V, and the partial sp. vol., .hivin.n, were estd. for more than 25 polyelectrolyte structures. The materials investigated by d. measurements in highly dild. aq. solns. (c < 10-2 monomol/L) included both synthetic polyelectrolytes and chem. modified natural polymers. Through a detailed anal., related to the chem. structure and macromol. parameters, a linear dependence between the copolymer compn. and the partial vols. could be identified for diallyldimethylammonium chloride/a

The limit of applicability of the monomer-enhanced mechanism as dominant mechanism ruling the initiation process of the polymerization of acrylamide (AM) initiated with potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) has been determined The kinetics and mechanisms for radic ...

Background & Aims: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation was shown to be effective for the treatment of liver fibrosis, but the mechanisms of action are not yet fully understood. We transplanted encapsulated human MSCs in two mouse models of liver fi ...

A series of bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide based "polymeric ionic liquids" (PILs) as high molecular mass analogues of the corresponding imidazolium, ammonium and pyrrolidinium ionic liquids (ILs) was synthesized with high purity and fully characterized including electrochemical properties. The PILs differed by the nature of the cation, the quantity of the ionic centers in each monomer repeating unit, and the alkyl length of the spacer. Two novel ionic liquid like monomers (ILMs), namely 1,3-bis(N,N,N-tri

To date, encapsulated grafts have usually been implanted in the peritoneal cavity. This site is, however, not ideal, mainly because of its low blood supply. We have investigated the feasibility of intra-portal injection of (400 microm) microcapsules in the pig. Ten-thousand microcapsules per kilogram body weight were injected into six Large White pigs. Portal pressure, various biological tests, portographies and liver histology were recorded before and at various time points after injection. As a result, po

A one-step extrusion process under physiological conditions yielded calcium alginate-poly-(ethylene glycol) hybrid microspheres (Alg-PEG-M), for which the physical properties were adjustable by the macromolecular characteristics of the components, their co ...

Employing a combined filtration and pptn. method, the endotoxin concn. in sodium alginate (SA) and sodium cellulose sulfate (SCS) was reduced to a value of 200 EU/g polymer. This is one-tenth of the regulatory threshold calcd., e.g., for an appropriate bioartificial pancreas that consists of approx. 420,000 encapsulated islets of Langerhans. The low endotoxin (ET) levels were maintained below this threshold over a 6-mo storage period. The purifn. procedure of the polymers did not neg. influence the final mi

This report describes the aqueous solution self-assembly of a series of polystyrenem-b-poly(L-lysine)n block copolymers (m = 8-10; n = 10-70). The polymers are prepared by ring-opening polymerization of e-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-lysine AT-carboxyanhydride usin ...

A series of acrylamide/dimethylaminoethylacrylate methyl chloride copolymers (AM-co-DMAEA) was evaluated as flocculants for model Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (FCC) in distilled water. These cationic polyelectrolytes (PEL) differed by their AM/DMAEA rati ...

The effect of gamma radiation on the physical-chemical properties of sodium alginate Algimar has been investigated. Dilution viscometry, densitometry, and FTIR spectroscopy served to identify modifications. Decreasing intrinsic viscosities clearly revealed chain cleavage for both solid alginate and alginate in aqueous solution. The invariance of the partial specific volume and infrared results indicate that chain degradation occurs without significant change of the chemical structure. The obtained results h

Hydrogel microspheres, beads, and capsules of uniform size, differing in their chem. compn., have been prepd. by electrostatic complex formation of sodium alginate with divalent cations and polycations. These have served as model spheres to study the influence of the chem. compn. on both surface characteristics and bulk mech. properties. Resistance to compression expts. yielding the compression work clearly identified differences as a function of the compn., with forces at maximal compression in the range o

The electrolytic cond. and soln. viscosity of some strong polycations, which possess the ammonium quaternary centers either attached to an acrylic macromol. chain (polycation PDMAEMQ type), or in the backbone (polycation PCA type), have been measured to identify how charge d., polyelectrolyte concn., solvent polarity as well as counterion nature influence the ultimate soln. properties. The investigations reveal for all polycations an increase of the equiv. cond. with decreasing concn. The onset of the stron

The solids are removed from an aq. suspension contg. 4-12 g coal fines/L using a suspension of a water-sol., high-mol. wt., highly crosslinked copolymer of di-Me diallyl ammonium chloride and 0.1-3 mol.% of a crosslinked comonomer, optionally mixed with anionic or nonionic polyacrylamide. The suspension is used at a rate of 0.1-4 mg/L at 276-310 K to form a floc which can be sepd. by known means. The floc is suitable for use in briquet manuf. [on SciFinder (R)]
