This paper describes the status on the upgrade of the first European gyrotron prototype for ITER, manufactured by Thales. The upgraded prototype, TH1509U, is now being tested to verify the performance improvements and to assess the compliance with ITER ECR ...

High-frequency gyrotrons; with high output power are mainly used for microwave heating and current drive in plasmas for thermonuclear fusion. The development of high-power gyrotrons; in continuous wave (CW) operation has been in progress for several years ...

Using the new interaction code Phaedra, a thorough and systematic investigation of the operation of a high-power gyrotron cavity in the hard excitation regime took place. The preliminary result of this analysis shows that in the hard excitation regime, the ...

A detailed study of the operational capabilities of the W7-X/1MW gyrotron operated at 126GHz/TE26,7 is presented. This study is associated with the foreseen upgrade of TCV in which it is planned to add to the present EC system 3MW of additional RF power bringing the total EC-power to 7.5MW. This study is extended to a possible operation of the gyrotron at the ITER relevant frequency of 168GHz in the TE35,9 mode without implementing any further modification neither in the gyrotron nor in the gyrotron superco

The effects of plasma shape on confinement and sawtooth stability are studied for positive and negative discharge triangularity and for different elongations with 1.5 MW centrally deposited ECH power

We investigate experimental dependence of the third harmonic generation efficiency in the n-type Si crystals on the geometrical dimensions of the sample, polarization and power of the fundamental wave. The efficiency increases monotonically with the rise o ...

The magnetron injection gun (MIG) is one of the most critical subcomponents in gyrotrons. The electron beam, which has the primary role on the gyrotron operation, is generated and configured at this part of the tube. The electron beam properties determine ...

The aim of the WEST experiments is to master long plasma pulses (1000s) and expose ITER-like tungsten wall to deposited heat fluxes up to 10 MW/m2. To increase the margin to reach the H-Mode and to control W-impurities in the plasma, the installation of an ...

Six Electron Cyclotron (EC) launchers are currently envisaged to be installed at the Equatorial Ports (EP) of the EU DEMO Tokamak with the purpose of delivering up to 130 MW for plasma bulk heating (BH), thermal instability (TI) control and magnetohydrodyn ...

A mock-up gun has been manufactured as exact replica of the refurbishment first prototype EU 170 GHz/2MW/CW coaxial cavity gyrotron, but without emitter ring in order to validate the voltage standoff stability. The experimental results of the mock-up gun tests are presented.

An Electron Cyclotron (EC) Heating and Current Drive (HCD) system will be installed in the EU DEMO Tokamak to provide plasma heating and stabilization by coupling up to 130 MW of mm-wave power into specific regions of the plasma. The mm -waves will be gene ...

We have performed this work again.

We demonstrate the construction of corrugated waveguides using stacked rings to propagate terahertz frequencies. The waveguide allows propagation of the same fundamental mode as an optical-fiber, namely, the H E11 mode. This simple concept opens the way fo ...

The upgraded EU 1 MW, 170 GHz continuous wave (CW) industrial prototype gyrotron (TH1509U) for Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating and Current Drive (ECRH&CD) in ITER was tested at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The gyrotron surpassed the pe ...

We demonstrate the construction of corrugated waveguides using stacked rings to propagate terahertz frequencies. The waveguide allows propagation of the same fundamental mode as an optical-fiber, namely, the HE11 mode. This simple concept opens the way for ...
