Molecular dynamics simulations of displacement cascades in aluminium, aluminium-nickel solid solutions and inhomogeneous samples containing amorphous or crystalline Al3Ni precipitates are performed. It is shown that no segregation occurs inside the displac ...

Single crystal copper was irradiated with 590 MeV protons to a dose of 0.01 dpa at room temperature. Irradiated and unirradiated tensile samples were deformed and relaxation tests were performed at temperatures between 77 and 293 K. The tests show a strong temperature dependence of the flow stress of irradiated samples as compared to the unirradiated case. Deformed microstructures in the unirradiated and irradiated samples were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The plastic deformation mechan

At present, little is known about the response of the martensitic phase in TiNi alloys to heavy ion irradiation. However, previous studies [2,3] of ion and electron irradiation show that these alloys are highly susceptible to disorder and amorphization at damage levels below 1 dpa. This substantially affects their transformation characteristics and their shape memory effect. The present study focuses on the effect of 5 MeV Ni ion irradiation of plastically strained (epsilon-4%) martensitic TiNi thin films,

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of displacement cascades in Fe-0.1%He are used to investigate the synergistic effects of primary knock-on atoms (PKA) and He on the irradiation damage production at temperatures between 10 K and 523 K. The results indicat ...

The deformed microstructures of both irradiated and unirradiated Fe-9%Cr (Fe-9Cr) uniaxial tensile specimens have been examined to identify controlling mechanisms. Deformation following irradiation is found to occur in poorly defined channels about 100 nm wide, causing formation of discrete steps at surfaces and, interestingly, designated by nonuniformly distributed highly elongated voids. Deformation is by motion of a(0)/2 dislocations, which interact with and decompose irradiation-induced a(0)

The weak beam technique is now used widely for the determination of stacking fault energies, in particular for intermetallic alloys, and the accuracy of the approach is critically dependent upon the reliability of the relationship between the image and the actual position of the dissociated dislocations. Examining as a model case a dislocation dissociated into two Shockley partial dislocations in Cu at 100 kV for orientations ranging through the g(3g) weak beam condition, image simulations are used to explo

One of the most important problems in the field of nuclear industry is the relationship between irradiation-induced damage and the resulting induced mechanical response of the target metal and in particular ferritic base steels. In this work the molecular dynamics is used to simulate the nanoscale interaction between a moving dislocation and a defect, such as a cavity, as void or He bubble. The stress-strain curves are obtained under imposed strain rate condition using the atomic potentials based on the Fe

The purpose of this study is to investigate the modes of vibration of the self-interstitial atoms and the vacancy in bcc iron and to estimate how the vibrational properties can affect the stability of these defects. The phonon density of states of the vaca ...

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) imaging using diffraction contrast is a powerful technique to assess crystal defects. In this work it is used to assess the spatial distribution of radiation induced defect in tungsten. In effect, its irradi ...

Oxide dispersion strengthened steels based on the ferritic/martensitic steel EUROFER97 are developed. The reinforcing particles dispersed in the matrix of EUROFER97 are made of yttria and yttrium titanium oxides. Microstructure is investigated by transmiss ...

One of the most important problems in the field of nuclear industry is the relationship between irradiation-induced damage and the resulting induced mechanical response of the target metal and in particular ferritic base steels. In this work molecular dynam ...

Irradiation-induced transformations in sputter-deposited Ti-rich NiTi thin films have been investigated with special attention given to the effects of prior deformation on the response of martensite phase. Irradiation at low fluence was carried out at room ...

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is revisited in order to define methods for the identification of nanometric defects. Nanometric crystal defects play an important role as they influence, generally in a detrimental way, physical properties. For insta ...

Atomistic simulations are used to describe the ½ screw dislocation in tungsten. Two different embedded atom model (EAM) potentials and one bond-order potential (BOP) are compared. A new analytical approach for constructing asymmetrical screw dislocati ...

Irradiation-induced disordering of bulk Ni3Al under 6 MeV Ni2+ irradiation is studied at room temperature. A self-consistent long-range-order quantification method for ion-irradiated intermetallics is presented using cross-sectional sample preparation and conventional transmission electron microscopy in selected area diffraction depth profiling mode. This method, which does not require the full assessment of dynamic diffraction image simulation information, is unique to precisely measure long-range-order as

Tensile properties have been investigated on the low activation F82H ferritic/martensitic steels for both unirradiated and irradiated material. The irradiations have been carried out with protons of medium energy (590 MeV) at the PIREX facility and doses from 0.2 up to 1.75 dpa have been reached for temperature ranging between 310 and 673 K. The irradiation induced hardening has been systematically measured at room temperature for the different irradiation conditions (dose and irradiation temperature). The

Within the European Union, the two major breeding blanket concepts presently being developed are the helium cooled pebble bed (HCPB), and the helium cooled lithium lead (HCLL) blankets. For both concepts, different conceptual designs are being discussed wi ...

We have fabricated three-quarter ring structures on silicon nitride membranes for magnetic domain imaging using Lorentz electron microscopy. The ring structures have linewidths of 100, 250, 350 and 700 nm, and outer diameters of 1.65 mu m. Using the Foucau ...
