A Finite Element Model is used to observe the build-up of residual thermal stresses during the sintering process in two WC-Co samples with different volume fractions of Co. A realistic model of the two phase material is obtained by FIB slicing a real WC-Co ...

This review paper shows that grain boundary sliding (GBS) is a general phenomenon occurring in all classes of inorganic materials: ceramics, metals and composite materials. The occurrence of relaxations attributed to GBS is also quite general and therefore ...

The mechanical loss and dynamic modulus temperature spectra of two 18-carat white gold alloys, Au58%Cu24%Pd18% without (grade A) and with alloying additions (grade B), were measured in the 400-1000 K temperature range. A peak interpreted as a Zener relaxat ...

Different Au-Ag-Cu samples have been studied by mechanical spectroscopy. Both polycrystals and bi-crystals show a relaxation peak at 800 K, accompanied by an elastic modulus change. Since this peak is absent in single crystals it is related to the presence ...

In-situ temperature XRD and mechanical spectroscopy were applied to study phase transitions in AuCu alloy from the disordered FCC state (A1). The phase transition temperature intervals were investigated upon heating and cooling using a rate of 1 K/min in o ...

Thermally sprayed hardmetal coatings can be used to improve the wear or fatigue resistance of mechanical parts. Depending on the deposition conditions, their microstructure and phase composition are out of equilibrium at different levels due to the extreme heating/cooling rates. In the present study, the changes that occur with temperature variation are monitored by mechanical spectroscopy. Requirements to specimen of mechanical spectroscopy created the need to prepare WC-17%Co coatings of 1.2 mm thickness

Nitrogen-rich Ca-alpha-SiAlON ceramics made with different starting powder compositions have been studied by high-temperature mechanical spectroscopy in parallel with compressive deformation in a spark plasma sintering equipment. The mechanical loss spectr ...

We investigate a vibrated granular system composed of millimeter-size glass beads. When the system is submitted to a perturbation with decreasing intensity, below the fluidization limit, it evolves in a way similar to glass-forming liquids until it reaches ...

A point defect relaxation peak has been observed in a ternary 18-carat gold alloy with the composition Au62.5Pd32.5In5. It shows a Curie Weiss dependence on the temperature, as is commonly observed for a Zener peak. However, the peak is absent in the binar ...

We investigate the jamming transition observed in vibrated granular systems composed of millimeter size glass beads. When a granular system is submitted to vibrations with decreasing intensity, it evolves in a way similar to glass-forming liquids: from a low viscosity, liquid-like state, it evolves into an amorphous jammed state. This evolution is observed by the means of an immersed oscillator acting as a torsion pendulum in forced mode. The complex susceptibility of the oscillator is measured as a functio

Grain boundary stress relaxation in Au polycrystals and single crystals has been studied by mechanical spectroscopy. A relaxation peak related to grain boundaries is observed at 620 K. Molecular dynamics simulations on Au are performed in order to illustra ...

Phase transitions and related anelastic effects are examined in Fe-xGa alloys (x =19 and 27 at.%) by means of in situ neutron diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, dilatometry, and three different mechanical spectroscopy techniques: torsion forced pe ...

New data are presented on dynamic measurements of elasticity and anelasticity of several poly- and single crystalline Ni1+xTi1-x alloys for frequencies between 0.05 and 100 kHz over a wide temperature range below room temperature. Anelastic effects, previo ...

WC–Co cemented carbides are one of the most widely used materials for the production of cutting tools, for their exceptional mechanical properties. Due to the extreme mechanical and thermal conditions of the cutting operations, understanding and controllin ...

Au60Ag30Cu10 (in at%) gold alloy exhibits a mechanical loss spectrum composed of a Zener peak due to Cu atoms in the solid solution and of a second relaxation peak at higher temperature or lower frequency. It is shown that this second peak is related to the presence of grain boundaries as it is absent in the spectrum of a single crystal. This mechanical loss peak, which is stable and reproducible in heating and cooling cycles, is thermally activated with an activation enthalpy of 2.35 eV and an apparent lim

Tempering effects have been studied in three martensitic carbon steels by mechanical spectroscopy. The mechanical-loss spectra present a relaxation peak similar to the Snoek-Koster peak in ferrite. The peak amplitude decreases upon tempering, indicating a ...

Composites containing 3 mol% yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with various amounts of CNTs (3Y-TZP / X wt% CNT, X= 0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 and 5) were processed by spark plasma sintering. Microscopic analysis proves that CNTs were well dispersed and embedded in grain boundaries of the sintered body. High temperature mechanical properties have been investigated using mechanical spectroscopy and low stress (6 MPa) creep. The isothermal spectrum (measure

We propose a new approach to the study of diffusion dynamics in vibrated granular systems. The dynamic of a granular material is mainly defined by dry friction interactions. This type of interaction is difficult to model for a large quantity of particles. ...

Transient and thermally activated anelastic effects between 0 and 800 °C are studied in in a Fe-26.6at%Ga alloy using bending and torsion forced vibrations and measuring the mechanical loss ant the elastic modulus. The structure characterization and transformations are studied by in situ neutron diffraction. The phase morphology and grain crystal structure are investigated by EBSD. Vibrating sample magnetometry accompanies those measurements providing the magnetic susceptibility that characterize the phases

The microstructural changes occurring during drawing and ageing in pearlitic steel wires have been studied using the thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements combined with atom probe tomography (APT) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). APT analysis ...
