Rare earths and their compounds show many interesting physical phenomena caused by the complex electronic structure related to f electrons. External pressure can affect the hybridization between 5d band electrons and the more atomic-like 4f ones, giving ri ...

We investigate with angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy the changes of the Fermi surface and the main bands from the paramagnetic state to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state occurring below 72 K in Fe1.06Te. The evolution is completely different from ...

Due to imperfect surfaces of most cuprate samples, almost all photoemission studies in the past decade were performed on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x, even though a large fraction of other studies and electronic applications was reported for YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) family of superconducting compounds. In order to systematically study the gap parameter and the Fermi surface variation in high symmetry directions of YBCO and related oxide films we have constructed a new facility at the Wisconsin Synchrotron Radiation Center

We present high resolution (Delta E=120 meV) resonant inelastic x-ray scattering data measured at the Ni L-3 edge (2p(3/2)-> 3d) on the paradigmatic antiferromagnetic oxide NiO. Spectra reveal clear signatures of magnetic excitations at similar to 95 and s ...

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has rapidly become a mature spectroscopic technique. In particular, taking advantage of an improved energy resolution, a series of experiments performed over the past 5 years have established soft X-ray RIXS as a ...

Time- and angle-resolved photoemission measurements on two doped graphene samples displaying different doping levels reveal remarkable differences in the ultrafast dynamics of the hot carriers in the Dirac cone. In the more strongly (n-)doped graphene, we ...

We used thermal neutron irradiation to produce disorder in Bi-2212 single crystals (T-c = 85 K), at a constant carrier density. The irradiated samples were insulators. High-temperature superconductivity with a lower T-c than prior to irradiation could be restored by a low-temperature annealing. We performed angle-resolved photoemission investigation on both unannealed (insulating) and annealed (superconducting) samples in order to study the corresponding changes in electronic structure. We observed a strong

The manipulation of the electronic properties of solids by light is an exciting goal, which requires knowledge of the electronic structure with energy, momentum and temporal resolution. Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) is the ...

We observe a giant spin-orbit splitting in the bulk and surface states of the noncentrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI. We show that the Fermi level can be placed in the valence or in the conduction band by controlling the surface termination. In both cases, ...

We investigate by means of high resolution angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy the classical one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ and the inorganic one-dimensional conductor (TaSe4)(2)I. We measure dispersive features (1D bands) in accordance with band structure calculations. We observe typical bulk specific properties like the band periodicities (i.e. the Fermi wavevector) and the CDW-gap, which are in agreement with other experimental techniques. Peculiar for one-dimensional systems, we do n

We present a detailed analysis of the band structure of the root 3 x root 3 R 30 degrees BiAg2/Ag/Si(111) trilayer system by means of high resolution Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES). BiAg2/Ag/Si(111) exhibits a complex spin-polarized elec ...

We describe a new pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system that is linked to an angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) chamber at the Synchrotron Radiation Center (SRC) in Wisconsin, USA. We also discuss our first results on epitaxially grown YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films. The core level photoemission data indicate that a Be-oxide layer is the dominant surface layer. We were not able to reproducibly detect a sharp fermi edge in the photoemission spectra and thus conclude that the surface layer is non-metallic, pro

We have investigated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy changes induced by Xe adsorption on the spin-orbit-split bands of the epitaxial Ag(111) (root 3x root 3)R30 degrees-Bi surface alloy. We observe an extensive backfolding of the alloy band structure due to the formation of a 9 x 9 commensurate or quasicommensurate Xe overlayer and the opening of a small hybridization gap at the intersection of two sets of bands of (primarily) Bi sp(z) and p(xy) characters. The large spin-orbit splitting of the

Long known for its peculiar resistivity, showing a thus far unexplained anomalous peak as a function of temperature, ZrTe5 has recently received rising attention in a somewhat different context. While both theoretical and experimental results seem to point ...

By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and polarization-dependent infrared reflectivity measurements the electronic and vibrational properties of the low-dimensional perovskites Sr1-yLayNbO3.5-x were studied along different crystal directions. The electronic behavior strongly depends on the oxygen and La content, including quasi-one-dimensional metallic and ferroelectric insulating behavior. An extremely small energy gap at the Fermi level is found for SrNbO3.41 and SrNbO3.45 along the conducting dire

We have studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) the band structure of the ordered surface alloy obtained by the deposition of 0.33 monolayers of Pb on the Ag(111) surface. We observe several dispersing features which are well described ...

Metal monochalcogenides (MX) have recently been rediscovered as two-dimensional materials with electronic properties highly dependent on the number of layers. Although some intriguing properties appear in the few-layer regime, the carrier mobility of MX co ...

Spin-polarized two-dimensional electronic states have been observed in metallic surface alloys with giant Rashba splitting and at the surface of topological insulators. We study the surface band structure of these systems, in a unified manner, by exploitin ...

The spectroscopy of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) systems has been a subject of strong interest since the first experimental observations of unusual line shapes in the early 1990s. Angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements performed with increasing ac ...

We present recent results obtained with a novel spectrometer developed within the EU project VOLPE (VOLume PhotoEmission from solids with synchrotron radiation), now operational at ESRF (Beamline ID 16), where we were able to achieve high energy resolution ...
