Cathepsin B is a lysosomal cysteine protease that plays an important role in cancer, atherosclerosis, and other inflammatory diseases. The suppression of cathepsin B can inhibit tumor growth. The overexpression of cathepsin B can be used for the imaging an ...

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is a relatively new modality for the combined treatment of cancer. Pre-treatment of certain types of cancer cells with PBM potentiates the treatment efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT). The mechanism of action of this sy ...

The efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) alone was evaluated on 41 ‘early’ squamous cell carcinomas of the pharynx (10), oesophagus (15) and tracheo-bronchial tree (16). All lesions but two were synchronous second primaries in ENT-patients suffering from ...

Detection of tissue and cell oxygenation is of high importance in fundamental biological and in many medical applications, particularly for monitoring dysfunction in the early stages of cancer. Measurements of the luminescence lifetimes of molecular probes ...

Cylindrical light diffusers (CLDs) are often employed for the treatment of large tumors by interstitial photodynamic therapy (iPDT) and photoimmunotherapy (PIT), which involves careful treatment planning to maximize therapeutic dose coverage while minimizi ...

The concentration of oxygen and its rate of consumption are important factors in certain medical treatments, such as radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Measuring the tissue concentration of oxygen or its partial pressure (pO2) can be achieved by ...

To detect bronchial carcinoma by autofluorescence, we measured the spectra of tumor and normal tissue in situ, in an in vivo model and in vitro by fiber optic spectrometer and two-dimensional resolved microspectroscopy. The in situ measurements were perfor ...

A fluorescence imaging device applied to the detection of early cancer is described. The app. is based on the imaging of laser-induced fluorescence of a dye that localizes in a tumor with a higher concn. than in the surrounding normal tissue after i.v. inj ...

Therapies to accelerate vascular repair are currently lacking. Pre-clinical studies suggest that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an endogenous gasotransmitter, promotes angiogenesis. Here, we hypothesized that sodium thiosulfate (STS), a clinically relevant source ...

We are developing an imaging system to detect pre-/early cancers in the tracheo-bronchial tree. Autofluorescence might be useful but many features remain suboptimal. We have studied the autofluorescence of human healthy, metaplastic and dysplastic/CIS bron ...

The pharmacokinetics of the photosensitizer used play a key role in the understanding of the mechanism of photodynamic therapy-induced damage. Fluorescence microscopy was used to compare time-dependent biodistribution of tetra(m-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (mTHP ...

The interaction between a ruthenium - based water soluble oxygen probe ([Ru(Phen)3]2+, phen - phenanthroline) and human serum albumin (HSA) was investigated with the aim of describing the influence of HSA on the [Ru(Phen)3]2+ luminescence properties. Nowad ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer in the esophagus and bronchi with red (630 nm) light may occasionally lead to wall perforation and fistula. Therefore, the clin. use of a less penetrating wavelength (514 nm) was investigated for the curative treatment ...

Macrophages play key roles in inflammatory disorders. Therefore, they are targets of treatments aiming at their local destruction in inflammation sites. However, injection of low molecular mass therapeutics, including photosensitizers, in inflamed joints r ...

The aim of the present study was to monitor photodynamic angioocclusion with verteporfin in capillaries. Details of this process were recorded under a microscope in real-time using a high-sensitivity video camera. A procedure was developed based on intrave ...

The global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 has highlighted the necessity for innovative therapeutic solutions. This research presents a new formulation utilising the metal–organic framework MIL-101(Al)–NH2, which is loaded with hypericin, aimed at addressing viral ...

The use of dyes has been helpful for the photodiagnosis of small cancers accessible to endoscopic examn. An important limiting factor of this technol. is that the presently used fluorescent dye mixt. has a relatively poor capacity to accumulate preferentia ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on the combined administration of photosensitizing drugs and light to treat a variety of malignant, pre-malignant and also non-malignant diseases. The reactive species resulting from the excitation of the photosensitizer ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Foscan (mTHPC) is used to cure early cancers of the esophagus or the tracheobronchial tree. However, fixed PDT parameters (drug dose, light dose, etc.) do not permit an accurate prediction of the tissue damage. Large interpa ...

Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, a non-invasive therapeutic approach utilizing red and near-infrared light at sub-thermal irradiances, presents significant potential in promoting angiogenesis and tissue repair. This study optimized PBM parameters and eval ...
