Giovanni De Micheli is a research scientist in electronics and Martin RajmanMartin Rajman is the Executive Director of
Nano-tera.ch
, a large Swiss Research Program funding collaborative multi-disciplinary projects for the engineering of complex systems in Health and the Environment. Since 2008, the Nano-Tera.ch program started more than 100 research projects for a total public funding of more than 95 Mo CHF (~100 Mo USD).
Before being appointed as Nano-Tera.ch Executive Director, Martin Rajman was Director of the EPFL Global Computing Center (CGC), an association of research groups and laboratories of the School of Computer and Communication Sciences fostering interdisciplinary research in the general area of internet computing and distributed information systems. In this position, he was managing more than 20 European projects.
In parallel with his research management activities, Martin Rajman is senior researcher at EPF Lausanne, Switzerland (EPFL). His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics and Data-driven Probabilistic Machine Learning.
Previously, he was senior researcher at the Computer Science Department of Telecom Paris-Tech, where he was in charge of the development of a research and teaching activity in the domain of Natural Language Processing.
Martin Rajman is also active in various large scale industry-research collaborations with majors economic players. In particular, he has been involved in the improvement of the product ranking technology used by e-Bay and is currently collaborating with Elsevier on enhanced article recommendation techniques.
Martin Rajman is author or co-author of more than 100 publications and former Director of the Computer Science Series of EPFL-Press (PPUR).

Patrick MayorPatrick Mayor conducted his doctoral research on soft condensed matter physics at the Institute of Physics of Complex Matter at EPFL. His PhD thesis, entitled "Fluid and glassy phases of vibrated granular matter studied with a torsion oscillator", focused on the central concept of temperature in out-of-equilibrium systems, developing a method to probe these systems based on fundamental statistical mechanics theory. The experiment has become well known in the field and the research yielded several publications in major journals (including the cover page of Nature), a lot of Swiss and international media coverage, and won the EPFL doctorate award for the best thesis of year 2005 as well as the Charles Haenny prize.
As a post-doctoral fellow for 2 years at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA, Patrick Mayor worked on impact phenomena in granular materials, supported by an SNSF grant. In parallel to his research activities, Patrick Mayor has taken an active role in teaching, and collaborated on various mathematics and physics classes.
In 2009, Patrick Mayor became the scientific coordinator Nano-Tera.ch, one of the largest Swiss federal programs funding research in engineering sciences, supporting 188 projects with a total budget of ~260 MCHF. He was in charge of the coordination, technical writing, dissemination and communication until the program's conclusion in 2018.
He is now the program manager for the MARVEL NCCR. He is in charge of internal communication within the MARVEL community, and deals with education and knowledge transfer activities.

Vitor Pessoa ColomboVitor grew up in São Paulo (Brazil) and studied architecture in Switzerland (B.Sc. École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, M.Sc. Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio). Since 2016, he has conducted research on urbanization processes in cities of the global South. He has focused his research on "citizen mapping" methods that provide spatial information useful to support the improvement of vulnerable human settlements in cities marked by socio-spatial segregation. Now he conducts a PhD project at EPFL's CEAT unit to investigate how different urban morphologies relate to the occurence of diarrhoeal diseases in the context of rapid and largely informal urbanization processes.
