System and methods for producing a plurality of Sinc shaped pulses in the time domain include a light source for providing an input light signal having an input frequency, and at least one spectrum shaper for producing the plurality of Sinc shaped pulses f ...

The Manakov modulation instability is shown to determine the performance limit of long-distance Brillouin fiber sensors utilizing orthogonally-polarized pumps. Numerical simulations of the Manakov equation are supported by the experimental measurement of a ...

A new method for chromatic dispersion mapping in optical fibers is presented. It is based on measuring the CW four-wave mixing distribution created by two beams along the fiber using a Brillouin-OTDA. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the technique

The absorption of light by a gas molecule has been measured comparatively using light propagating in normal conditions and in a slow light regime. The experiment is designed to make the 2 measurements possible without modifying the interaction conditions, ...

A method to produce highly-stable optical sinc-shaped pulses is proposed based on the generation of a rectangular-spectrum frequency comb. Nyquist pulses with

We report the first observation of backward stimulated Brillouin scattering in fully cladded Si3N4 waveguides. The intrinsic Brillouin gain at 25 GHz and the photoelastic constant are estimated to be 4 × 10−13 m/W and |p12| = 0.047 ± 0.004 respectively. ...

In this letter, we experimentally demonstrate Brillouin echoes-based distributed optical fiber sensing with centimeter spatial resolution. It is based on a differential phase-shift-keying technique using a single Mach–Zehnder modulator to generate a pump p ...

Recently developed, highly effective technologies enabling slow light propagation as a tunable feature in photonic devices, are reviewed. Several applications in ICT are also demonstrated. Controlling the group velocity of light offers a broadband solution ...

Sensing is the fundamental technique for sensor data acquisition in monitoring the operation condition of the machinery, structures and manufacturing processes. In this paper, we briefly discuss the general idea and advances of various new sensing technolo ...

A technique based on a multi-dimensional signal processing approach is here described for performance enhancement of distributed optical fibre sensors. In particular, the main features of linear and nonlinear image denoising techniques are described for si ...

The possibility to perform distributed measurements of the effective refractive index difference between distinct modes in few mode optical fibers is demonstrated using phase sensitive optical time domain reflectometry. Effective refractive index differenc ...

Large light–sound interaction in nanoscale silicon wires is experimentally demonstrated, making integrated nonlinear optical devices a reality.

In this paper we will present the Brillouin scattering properties of optical fibres as experimentally measured at ultra-low temperatures and discuss the possibilities for distributed cryogenic temperature sensing, accordingly. We then present a first example of real scale application

This paper describes the outcome of two groups which are involved in the specification of guidelines for fibre optic sensors performance and testing. The "Guideline for use of fibre optic sensors" from the COST-299 guideline group, and the "Optical Strain ...

Commonly, the frequency shift of back-reflection spectra is the key parameter to measure quantitatively local temperature or strain changes in frequency-scanned Rayleigh-based distributed fiber sensors. Cross-correlation is the most common method to estima ...

Brillouin time-domain analysis in optical fibres is a novel technique making possible a distributed measurement of temperature and strain over long distance and will deeply modify our view about monitoring large structures, such as dam, bridges, tunnels and pipelines

A closed-loop servo control based on the gain ratio of two probing frequencies is proposed for fast BOTDA, where the feedback is independent of probe and pump loss, making it robust in harsh environment. ...

The importance of molecular relaxation in photoacoustic spectroscopy is discussed. The particular case of methane monitoring in dry oxygen using a 1.65-μm laser-based photoacoustic sensor is reported. The slow vibration-to-translation energy transfer occur ...
