Assessing the relationship between neighbourhood morphology and urban climate is becoming increasingly important as cities continue to grow and the climate continues to change. Here we focus on the impact of (1) shapes and sizes of buildings, (2) street la ...

Automated shading systems have the potential to exploit daylight in buildings to save energy of artificial lighting and cooling loads and improve occupants'f visual comfort. This paper investigates the daylighting performance of automated Venetian blinds b ...

One main barrier to the acceptability of façade use of solar thermal collectors is their black appearance and the visibility of piping or absorber irregularities through the glazing. To facilitate façade integration, a project was set up to develop selecti ...

Nowadays, many new window components known as complex fenestration systems (CFS), such as laser-cut panels and prismatic films, are considered in order to improve the overall luminous properties of building spaces : detailed studies of CFS remain necessary ...

An evapotranspiration model, based on the FAO Penman-Monteith method, taking into account the surface temperature, has been developed and implemented in the ground temperature model of the CitySim software. A case study was conducted in a district of Geneva, Switzerland, which consists of 704 buildings and 714 ground surfaces, to understand the influence of evapotranspiration on the ground surface temperature and water requirement for the irrigation of these areas at urban scale. The simulations were conduc

Compactness is a major urban form parameter that affects the accessibility of solar energy in the built environment. Here we explore the relation between various compactness indicators and solar potential in the 16 neighbourhoods (11,418 buildings) constit ...

The implementation of Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS) in the day-to-day life by practitioners, such as lighting designers, architects and façade makers is not an easy task. However, computer design tools can reinforce their usage through the determinati ...

Lighting has an impact on the visual as well as cognitive performance of people in non-residential buildings. Light is the most powerful time cue for resetting the circadian pacemaker and ensuring correct synchronization of the internal clock with the envi ...

In the present century, for the first time in history, the urban population overpassed the rural one. Cities are growing, and their impact on the world energy balance is significant. Consequently, a sustainable urban environment focusing on the reduction o ...

Clean, safe, affordable and available in the long-term, wind is one of the most promising sources of renewable energy. Its optimized and profitable use, however, requires an estimation of the potential in locations of interest, given its very volatile beha ...

Physical models are commonly used to assess daylighting performance of buildings using sky simulators for purpose of research as well as practice. Recent studies have pointed out the general tendency of scale model assessments to overestimate the performan ...

Visual comfort is a key element at work places and at home. Besides task illuminance and color rendering it is the indoor light distribution, which strongly impacts visual comfort. We aimed to show possible relations between subjective and objective visual ...

Light adaptation is crucial for coping with the varying levels of ambient light. Using high-density electroencephalography (EEG), we investigated how adaptation to light of different colors affects brain responsiveness. In a within-subject design, sixteen ...

Many daylighting applications require a precise knowledge of the directional transmission features of advanced fenestration materials. These photometric properties are described by a bi-directional transmission distribution function (BTDF), whose experimental assessment requires an appropriate equipment. A novel bi-directional photogoniometer, based on digital imaging techniques, has been designed and developed for that purpose. The main advantages of this device are the significant reduction of the time re

Besides providing a more efficient energy use, a large scale application of solar energy technologies in the urban context will be required in the upcoming decades to achieve a drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the biosphere. Three different ...

The increase of the world's population leads to an urgent need of radical measures to diminish the energy footprint of humanity. This study considers the realisation of an optimal Masterplan in energy terms for the new EPFL Research Centre in Ras A1 Khaima ...

The bidirectional transmittance distribution function (BTDF), which is used to characterize the light transmission of a complex fenestration system (CFS), commonly involves bulky volume of data that can be a challenge to data storage and transmission in li ...

Architectural integration of solar technologies in the built environment is a challenge: one of the key tasks is the identification of homogeneous zones of intervention as a function of the solar energy potential and “criticity”, a combination of the socio ...

The increase of the urban population and the climate change are issues that scientists and stakeholders are facing nowadays; in this optic a sustainable design should address buildings, and all the physical phenomena that interact with them, from the urban ...

An accurate daylighting simulation can potentially improve the quality of pre-planing buildings and regulating daylighting to achieve the goal of green buildings. However, standard sky models can hardly reproduce real skies in real-time for a specific loca ...
