Rule-based control logics have proven to be efficient for automation of shading and lighting systems. However, successful commissioning of these systems for multiple stores non-residential buildings, regardless of the control logic, requires time-consuming ...

In developing countries with a large population and fast urbanization, High-rise Residential Buildings (HRBs) have unavoidably become a very common, if not the most, accommodation solution. The paradigm of HRB energy consumption is characterized by high-de ...

With wind power providing an increasing amount of electricity worldwide, the quantification of its spatio-temporal variations and the related uncertainty is crucial for energy planners and policy-makers. Here, we propose a methodological framework which (1 ...

Renewable energy integration into multi energy grids (MEG) is gradually getting popular due to the rapid depletion of fossil fuel resources and the global concern on GHG emissions through fossil fuel based energy conversion technologies. However, seasonal changes in solar and wind energy potentials make it challenging to increase the renewable energy capacity especially for urban applications where demand for energy services show a complex variation. According to recent literature, connecting multi energy h

Light has an important visual and non-visual impact on humans. Most of our information exchange, especially within office working spaces, occurs through it, our circadian rhythms are directly influenced by its presence. On the other hand, artificial lighti ...

This study proposes an integrated methodology to assess the BIPV potential of existing urban neighborhoods, including social acceptance and grid infrastructure management issues; as a demonstration, a case study in Geneva, Switzerland is considered. In par ...

Nanostructured coatings based on the elements Si, O, Mg, and F have been deposited as thin films by solegel dip-coating in a particle-free atmosphere. The refractive index of the prepared SiO2 and quaternary MgeFeSieO thin films has been determined from sp ...

It is well-known that the morphology of urban areas modifies the variations of climate variables at microscale; known as microclimate conditions. The complexity of urban morphology can lead to undesired wind conditions or excessive air temperature; particu ...

The intensive use of daylight in buildings is beneficial at many levels: it provides sufficient levels of illumination to perform working activities throughout the day and it reduces the use of artificial light, which in turn leads to lower electricity consumption [1-3]. The spectral composition of daylight often leads to higher visual comfort in humans, compared to electric lighting. There are also illuminance and spectrally-dependent light effects on the human circadian system, which regulate hormonal rhy

A novel concept for an advanced fenestration system was studied and samples were produced to demonstrate the feasibility. The resulting novel glazing will combine the functions of daylighting, glare protection, and seasonal thermal control. Coated microstr ...

Extreme climate events occur more frequently and stronger in the future due to climate change. Maintaining the energy security during extreme conditions is essential to reduce the impacts of extreme climate and avoid disasters. Resilient design of the ener ...

Spatial visualization is a very useful tool to help decision-makers in the urban planning process, i) to define future energy transition pathways, ii) to implement energy efficiency strategies and iii) to integrate renewable energy technologies in the cont ...

Multilayered thin oxide films have been deposited on solar collector glazing by sol-gel dip coating in a dust-free environment provided by a laminar flux chapel. A superior film quality and a satisfying film homogeneity have been achieved for the produced ...

Currently, more than half of the world’s population lives in cities, which leads to major changes in land use and land surface temperature (LST). The associated urban heat island (UHI) effects have multiple impacts on energy consumption and human health. A ...

The use of Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS) within buildings can contribute to a significant reduction of cooling loads by the way of two assets: the redirection of daylight and the shading of sunrays. In order to back-up these features, daylight performance evaluations need to be performed individually in each case according to the geographical location, outdoor conditions, building orientation and design as well as indoor material properties. The use of computer simulations can make this assessment easi

Making daylight more available in buildings is highly desirable, not only for reasons of energy-efficiency, but also for improvement of occupants’ health and well-being. Core-daylighting, that is daylight provision in areas situated at considerable distanc ...

Enhancing lighting conditions in institutions for individuals with dementia improves their sleep, circadian rhythms and well-being. Here, we tested whether a greater long-term daily light exposure supports the immune response to the annual influenza vaccination. Eighty older institutionalised patients suffering from dementia (54 women and 26 men) continuously wore an activity tracker for 8 weeks to assess individual light exposure and rest-activity cycles. The patients’ immune response was analysed from two

The thermal performance gap in buildings is defined as the difference between the theoretical and the actual energy consumption for heating, and is known to undermine energy retrofit strategies and policies. This study examines the performance gap in retro ...

The increasing use of ground-source heat pumps (GSHPs) for heating and cooling of buildings raises questions regarding the technical potential of GSHPs and their impact on the temperature in the shallow subsurface. In this paper, we develop a method using ...

Thin films of silicon oxide and silicon titanium mixed oxides are deposited on solar collector glazing in a sol–gel dip-coating process based on alcoxide precursors. Spectrophotometry is used to characterize the relation of film thickness and withdrawal sp ...
