Rotationally resolved spectra in the 5 nu (1) region of (CH3OH)-C-13 reveal strong vibrational splittings, which by analogy to (CH3OH)-C-12, we assign to a resonance between 5 nu (1) and 4 nu (1)+nu (2). Accordingly, the vibrational dynamics on a subpicosecond time scale are similar for the two isotopomers. Comparison of the secondary structure of the first-order states resulting from this strong resonance shows a distinct difference in the two isotopomers. While the C-12 species exhibits sharp secondary st

The structural complexity of glycans makes their characterization challenging, not only because of the presence of various isomeric forms of the precursor molecule but also because the fragments can themselves be isomeric. We have recently developed an IMS ...

We summarize here our experimental studies of the high rovibrational energy levels of water. The use of double-resonance vibrational overtone excitation followed by energy-selective photofragmentation and laser-induced fluorescence detection of OH fragment ...

It is known that a C-terminal lysine stabilizes helix formation in polyalanine peptides that have seven or more residues. Using a combination of cold ion spectroscopy and DFT calculations, we demonstrate that even a three-residue peptide, Ac-Phe-Ala-LysH+, adopts a structure in which the lysine side chain forms three hydrogen bonds with backbone carbonyls, reproducing the capping motif of larger polyalanine helices. This is confirmed by comparison with Ac-Phe-(Ala)5-LysH+, which forms a 310 helix containing

This paper describes a new spectroscopic technique which uses photodissociation to detect pure rotational transitions in highly excited vibrational energy levels of the ground electronic state. This method has initially been applied to the (HOCl)-Cl-35 molecule in its second excited OH stretching vibration, the (200) state. In addition to observing the microwave signal, the Stark effect for this transition provides a dipole moment measurement in the (200) vibrational state. The (200) 18(0,18) --> 17(1,17) t

Glycosylation patterns in monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) can vary significantly between different host cell types, and these differences may affect mAbs safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity. Recent studies have demonstrated that glycan isomers with the termi ...

We report here a new technique for spectroscopic studies of protonated, gas- phase biomolecules and demonstrate its utility by measuring highly-resolved electronic and infrared spectra of peptides of up to 17 amino acids. After UV excitation of an aromatic ...

Quantum beat spectroscopy is combined with triple-resonance vibrational overtone excitation to measure the Stark coefficients (SCs) of the water molecule for 28 rovibrational levels lying from 27 600 to 41 000 cm−1. These data provide a stringent test for assessing the accuracy of the available potential energy surfaces (PESs) and dipole moment surfaces (DMSs) of this benchmark molecule in this energy region, which is inaccessible by direct absorption. SCs, calculated using the combination of a high accurac

A device for fragmenting ions by collision induced dissociation, the device intended to be used together with a planar ion mobility apparatus, the device including a first conductive grid having a plurality of first openings, the first conductive grid conf ...

We present cryogenic infrared spectra of sodiated beta-cyclodextrin beta-CD + Na, a common cyclic oligosaccharide, and its main dissociation products upon collision-induced dissociation (CID). We characterize the parent ions using high-resolution ion ...

We report here a new method to obtain electronic spectra of biomolecular ions that are produced in the gas phase by electrospray and cooled to ~10K in a 22-pole ion trap, and we demonstrate this technique by applying it to protonated tryptophan and tyrosin ...

The isomeric complexity of glycans make their analysis by traditional techniques particularly challenging. While the recent combination of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) with cryogenic IR spectroscopy has demonstrated promise as a new tech-nique for glyca ...

We employ Cold Ion Spectroscopy (CIS) in conjunction with high-Field Asymmetric Waveform Ion Mobility Spectrometry (FAIMS) to study the peptide bradykinin in its doubly protonated charge state ([bk+2H]2+). Using FAIMS we partially separate the electrospray ...

We present the design of a highly efficient, pulsed ammonia laser which is optically pumped by a commercial TEA CO2 laser and is line tunable in the spectral range of 780-930 cm(-1). The power, spectral, and temporal characteristics of the laser have been investigated for different configurations of the optical cavity. Using a stable resonator, the laser operates with an efficiency of 24% (940 mJ) in a multiline configuration and 16.5% on a single line. Changing the resonator to an unstable configuration pr

We present a spectroscopic investigation of the excited-state dynamics of the phenylalanine (Phe)/serine (Ser) protonated dimer in the gas phase. Using an ultraviolet (UV) laser pulse, we promote individual isomers to the S1 state and probe their fate with ...

The amino acid serine has long been known to form a protonated “magic-number” cluster containing eight monomer units that shows an unusually high abundance in mass spectra and has a remarkable homochiral preference. Despite many experimental and theoretica ...

Because of the importance of helices in the secondary structure of proteins, we have undertaken a study of their spectroscopy, fragmentation patterns and conformations in the gas phase. In this work, we describe the effects of substitution at the N-terminu ...

We have used an optical-infrared double resonance technique to probe the nature of the eigenstates prepared by 4-nu-OH vibrational overtone excitation in hydrogen peroxide. A visible dye laser excites the 4
