Innovative disinfection technologies are being studied for seawater, seeking a viable alternative to chlorination. This study proposes the use of H2O2/UV254 and photo-Fenton as disinfection treatment in seawater. The irradiations were carried out using a s ...

The aim of this research is to clarify the contribution of sunlight wavelengths, irradiance and Fe2+/H2O2 during bacterial disinfection by the photo-Fenton process in clear surface waters. We considered different solar spectrum distributions (visible, UVA- ...

In this study, the synergistic and antagonistic effects of Fe species and coexisting natural organic matter (NOM) on the efficacy of solar light disinfection of water are investigated. Different initial iron species (Fe2+/Fe3+) and naturalorganic matter ty ...

The bacterial inactivation of E. coli by cotton TiO2/Cu DC-magnetron sputtered thin films was investigated in the dark and under low-intensity actinic light. The TiO2/Cu sputtered layers revealed to be sensitive to actinic light showing the spectral charac ...

The methylene blue (MB) discoloration on innovative photocatalysts made up of Raschig-rings coated by pre-formed TiO2 nanoparticles decorated with CuOx (RR@TiO2-Cu) is presented. The MB-discoloration was drastically accelerated by the subsequent addition o ...

In this work, iron oxides have been proposed as low-cost heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalysts for the simultaneous disinfection and reduction of microcontaminant load from urban wastewater in raceway pond reactors at near-neutral pH. The objective was not ...

The present study aimed to fill the knowledge gap between the implications of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance mechanisms may inflict on the inactivation pathways of the photo-Fenton process under mild conditions. It was thus designed ...

DC-magnetron sputtering with an Ag target on textile surfaces produced Ag particles with sizes similar to 4.7 nm (+/- 15%). Sputtering for 15 s led to Ag layers of 15-20 nm. The threshold sputtering time precluding airborne bacterial growth was about 60 s. ...

The reactivity of phenolic compounds can be drastically affected by the electronic nature of the substituting groups. In this work, the effect of physico-chemical properties on the reactivity via photo-assisted Fenton catalysis is reported for several para ...

This study reports the first attempt of a citrate-modified photo-Fenton (PF) application at near-neutral pH (7.5–8.5, tap water) to disinfect Escherichia coli (as model bacterium), in Chlorella vulgaris cultures. The conditions are aimed towards bacterial ...

The fate of melamine has been studied under UV light irradiation (medium pressure mercury arc) in the presence of TiO2 and H2O2. The increase in the concentration of aromatic and aliphatic photo-products were determined in solution concomitantly with the decrease observed for the melamine concentration. The main intermediate products occurring during photodegradation were identified by liquid chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with the MS detection in positive and negative ions. The oxidation

The emergence of antibiotic resistance represents a major threat to human health. In this work we investigated the elimination of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) by solar light and solar photo-Fenton processes. As such, we have designed an experimental ...

Novel photo-Fenton catalysts were prepared by immobilizing iron species on commercial bentonite plates via two methods: (1) ion exchange reaction (Fe3+ vs. Na+) by aqueous suspension powder-clay/FeCl3 followed by plate preparation, and (2) forced hydrolysi ...

This work presents a kinetic analysis of the exogenous photo-induced disinfection of E. coli in natural waters. Herein, the inactivation of bacteria by light and photo-generated transient species, i.e., hydroxyl radical (HO center dot), excited triplet sta ...

The photo-Fenton process (Fe-2+,Fe-3+/H2O2/hv) is known to degrade aqueous organic compounds at acidic pHs. Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that this process also occurs at circumneutral pHs. Dihydroxybenzene isomers (i.e., resorcinol, hydroquinone ...

Bi2WO6 is considered an effective photocatalyst, even under the visible part of the solar spectrum, and recent advances in the modification of its structure leave promise for harnessing its enhanced effectiveness. Our experimental E. coli disinfection resu ...

Evaluation of solar treatment in the absence and presence of TiO2 has been made to assess its effectiveness in reducing bacterial load with respect to drinking water standards. Field experiments under direct solar radiation were carried out using a compound parabolic collector (CPC) placed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland. Water contaminated with E coli K12 was exposed to sunlight in different seasons. The obtained results indicate that the presence of TiO2 accelera

This study addresses the DC-magnetron sputtering (DCMS) of Ag-films on polyester and compares the results found for the E. coli inactivation with the inactivation obtained when applying highly ionized pulse plasma power magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS). The a ...
