Two new innovative findings presented in this study are: (a) TiO2-cotton fabrics obtained by pretreatment with UVC-light (185nm) at atmospheric pressure introduced functionalities into the cotton surface enabling the chelation/binding of TiO2. This was pos ...

Batch solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a known, simple and low-cost water treatment technology. SODIS is based on the synergistic action of temperature increase and light-assisted generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) on bacteria. ROS are generate ...

In the present work, we study the fabrication of self-cleaning antibacterial surfaces, active under indoor or outdoor light. In order to obtain the highest activity with the lowest complexity we assess mild conditions of preparation (temperatures), pre-tre ...

The Fenton reaction is an effective advanced oxidation process occurring in nature and applied in engineering processes toward the degradation of harmful substances, including contaminants of emerging concern. The traditional Fenton application can be rema ...

TiO2 modified polyester photocatalysts were prepared by immersion. drying and curing of the polyester in TiO2 containing suspensions under different experimental conditions. The structure of TiO2 layers on the polyester varied according to the time of imme ...

Background. The development of alternative processes to eliminate pathogenic agents in water is a matter of growing interest. Current drinking water disinfection procedures, such as chlorination and ozonation, can generate disinfection by-products with car ...

This study presents the first evidence for the photocatalytic performance of ZnO/CuxO hexagonal nanowires leading to sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation. The chemical composition of the nanowires was determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The sample with the ...

This work uncovers the implications of the estimation of exogenous inactivation rates for E. coli after the initial lag phase, and presents a strategy for the determination of the second-order inactivation rate constants (k2nd) of these bacteria with relev ...

This study presents the photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) on TiO2/CuxO nanotubes (NTs) by a differentiated mechanism under low intensity solar light and indoor visible light irradiation. In the presence of TiO2/CuxO nanotubes, the SMT-degr ...

For the first time solar disinfection of liters of water containing wild Salmonella sp. and total coliforms was carried out in a compound parabolic collector (CPC) photoreactor at temperatures of almost 50 degrees C. Using surface water with high turbidity ...

Cu-cotton fabrics were functionalized by bipolar asymmetric DC-pulse magnetron sputtering (DCP). The DCP of Cu-particles on cotton proceeds at a higher energy than DC-magnetron sputtering (DC). The different sputtering mode showed effects on the structure ...

The inactivation of total coliforms/E. coli (10(4) CFU/mL) and Salmonella spp. (10(5) CFU/mL) in well water naturally containing dissolved (Fe2+/3+) and solid iron forms (e.g. iron oxides) was carried out by photo Fenton treatment (Fe-2+,Fe-3+/H2O2/hv). In ...

Solar disinfection (SODIS) is a WHO-accepted intervention method for improving water sources in developing countries. Despite its effectiveness, the limitations of long exposure and bacterial regrowth risk demand further improvement of the practice. In thi ...

Innovative pretreatment by UVC light (185 nm) and by radio-frequency (RF) plasma at atmospheric pressure to functionalize the Nylon surface, increasing its bondability toward TiO2, is reported in this study In the case of UVC light pretreatment in air, the ...

Cement based Eternit plates modified by TiO2/SiO2 surface layers acquired self-cleaning properties. The TiO2/SiO2 coating was transparent indicating that the small TiO2 (rutile) crystals cause no significant scattering. The parameters related to the compos ...

TiO2 photocatalytic and near-neutral photo-Fenton processes were tested under simulated solar light to degrade two models of natural organic matter -resorcinol (R) (which should interact strongly with TiO2 surfaces) and hydroquinone (H) -separately or in t ...

This study presents the performance of GF-mats loaded with TiO2 and Cu under solar/visible light leading to bacterial inactivation and pollutant degradation at both solid-air and solid-liquid interfaces. The GF-mats show effective water disinfection, self- ...

Solar disinfection (SODIS) is a well-accepted intervention method, leading to an improvement in contaminated water sources. In this work, we attempted to further enhance the bacterial inactivation process during light exposure. By means of iron oxide addit ...

The reactivity of phenolic compounds can be drastically affected by the electronic nature of substituents and by their positions in the aromatic ring. In this work, structure effect on the photoreactivity via TiO2 catalysis is studied using several substituted phenols in order to cover a wide variety of electronic effects, ranging from strong electron-donating (activating) to strong electron-withdrawing (deactivating) groups: ---OH, ---OCH3, ---OCH2CH2CH3, ---COOH, ---COH, ---COCH3, ---NO2, ---SO3H, ---CN,

Intensive research has been focused on the synthesis of N-modified TiO2 materials having visible light absorption in order to get higher solar photocatalytic degradation rates of pollutants in water. However, an exhaustive revision of the topic underlines ...
