We present a study of the adsorption of single molecules of volatiles, such as water, ethanol, ethyl acetate, pyridine, toluene, and n-octane, on the dry surface of a smectite clay using a series of calculations based on density functional theory. Our clay ...

The extraordinary property profiles of many biological materials derive from their hierarchical structure and control of order and disorder at different length scales. Application of these concepts to the design of synthetic polymers may provide new routes ...

The working electrode of a dye-sensitized photovoltaic fiber is constituted of a porous TiO2 coated titanium wire. The cohesion and adhesion of such a brittle oxide coating on the ductile metal substrate are identified as crucial factors in maintaining pho ...

Bitumen is a complex viscoelastic material used as a binder in applications ranging from road paving to waterproof membranes for roofing [1]. In such applications, bitumen is often blended with a polymer in order to improve its elasticity. The resulting po ...

Using calculations based on density-functional theory, we explore the configurations that water molecules (2,3,4;6) assume on the surface a sodium 2:1 smectite clay with isomorphic substitutions both on octahedral and tetrahedral sheets. The hydrophilicity ...

On application of heat, shape memory polymers (SMPs) are able to revert to a primary shape from a secondary shape induced by mechanical deformation. It may be desirable to induce shape recovery at controlled rates under quasi-isothermal conditions, e. g. in certain biomedical applications in which actuation occurs at body temperature, requiring knowledge of the time dependent response of SMPs. In the present work, the time dependence of isothermal shape recovery has been investigated for two shape memory po

Nanocomposites based on 10 to 60 vol % cellulose nanofibers (NFC) in a photopolymerizable hyperbranched acrylate matrix were prepared. Unmodified NFC and NFC chemically modified with a silane coupling agent and with ceric ammonium nitrate for direct polyme ...

Novel amphiphilic multi-arm star-block copolymers with a hyperbranched core, a hydrophobic inner shell, and a hydrophilic outer shell have been prepared from a commercial hyperbranched polyester macroinitiator by ring-opening polymerization of -caprolacton ...

Blends of commercial epoxy monomer with a 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone hardener and poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were evaluated for their potential as a self-healing matrix for fiber-reinforced composites, based on their room temperature toughness and s ...

Nanocomposites with high volume fractions (15-50 vol%) of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) were prepared by impregnation of a wet porous NFC network with acetone/epoxy/amine solution. Infrared spectroscopy studies revealed a significant increase in curing r ...

Thermally activated shape memory polymers (SMPs) recover from a secondary shape induced by mechanical deformation to a primary equilibrium shape when they are heated to their actuation temperature. In certain applications, for example in the biomedical fie ...

Satisfactory impregnation of glass fiber mats may be obtained with isotactic polypropylene/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites under conditions comparable with industrial conditions. However, it is demonstrated here that the high melt viscosity of the nan ...

The evolution of the morphology and degree of crystallinity was investigated postmortem in initially amorphous specimens of a commercial poly(dl-lactide) with a relatively low d-lactide content, after different immersion times in liquid CO2 at 10 A degrees ...

Colloidal silica nanoparticles (NPs) modified with eight different silane coupling agents were incorporated into an amorphous poly(tetramethylene oxide)-based polyurethane-urea copolymer matrix at a concentration of 10 wt % (4.4 vol %) in order to investig ...

The integration of shear-thickening fluids (STFs) into composite structures has been investigated with the aim of tuning part stiffness and damping capacity under dynamic deformation. Results from oscillatory rheological measurements for a STF based on con ...

Optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy have been used to investigate the morphology of polylactide (PLA)/microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) composites prepared by: compression molding of wet-comingled MFC and PLA latex or powder, twin-screw ...

The feasibility of integrating thermoplastic isotactic polypropylene/ montmorillonite nanocomposite matrices into conventional fiber-reinforced composites has been investigated. Two basic processing routes were considered: long glass fiber (GF)-reinforced ...

Dry, compression molded films of medical grade poly-L-lactide (PLLA) showed a marked reduction in tensile strength and strain after accelerated ageing in aqueous NaOH at 50 degrees C. accompanied by mass loss, surface erosion, increased hydrophilicity and, ...

Polymer semiconductors show unique combinations of mechanical and optoelectronic properties that strongly depend on their microstructure and morphology. Here, we have used a model pi-conjugated bithiophene repeat unit to incorporate optoelectronic function ...
