Poloidal asymmetries in the electron density profiles and limiter diagnostics suggest that poloidal and toroidal flows exist in the SOL and edge plasma of the TEXTOR tokamak. A fast reciprocating probe located at the outer midplane provides profiles of the basic plasma parameters including radial electric field and fluctuation driven transport. Based on the probe measurements, we calculate the E(r) X B(t) drift velocities and phase velocities of the turbulence. The measurements are compared to each other. T

The impact of the finite grid size in SOLPS-ITER edge plasma simulations is assessed for JET H-mode discharges with a metal wall. For a semi-horizontal divertor configuration it is shown that the separatrix density is at least 30% higher when a narrow scra ...

Metallic mirrors will be essential components of all optical spectroscopy and imaging systems for plasma diagnosis that will be used at the next-step magnetic fusion experiment, International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Any change of the mir ...

Recent scientific and technical progress on JET is summarized. The scientific programme on JET over the last 2 years has benefited significantly from various technological developments: advanced real time tools, enhanced heating systems and several upgrade ...

Recent studies (Maggi et al 2015 Nucl. Fusion 55 113031; Maggi et al 2017 Nucl. Fusion 57 116012) have shown that on JET with the Be/W ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) in high beta discharges with high D-2 gas rates, the inter-ELM temperature pedestal growth is sa ...

A 'standard', single null lower diverted discharge has been developed to enable continuous monitoring of the first wall conditions and to characterise the effectiveness and influence of wall conditioning in the TCV tokamak. Measurements over a period encompassing nearly 2000 ohmic discharges of varying configuration and input power show the global confinement time and main plasma impurity concentrations to be good general indicators of the first wall condition, whilst divertor target profiles demonstrate st

EDGE2D simulations show that high SOL flows can be generated when an additional radial convective transport is applied in the SOL and pedestal region along with a 'ballooning-like' poloidal variation in transport. This model produces an inward particle flu ...

Probe measurements of electrostatic plasma fluctuations in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of the TCV tokamak are compared with the results from two-dimensional interchange turbulence simulations. Excellent agreement is found for both the radial variation of st ...

The actively cooled technology used for the plasma facing components demands monitoring and control of heat flux on ITER first wall (FW) panels. Intense heat loads are predicted on the FW, even well before the burning plasma phase. Thus, a real-time (RT) F ...

The effects of plasma shape on confinement and sawtooth stability are studied for positive and negative discharge triangularity and for different elongations with 1.5 MW centrally deposited ECH power

Parallel heat flux calculations at the JET divertor have been based on the assumption that all incoming heat is due to the projection of the heat flux parallel to the magnetic line, q, plus a constant background. This simplification led to inconsistencies ...

In this paper we present the first results obtained with a plasma ion mass spectrometer in the boundary of the TEXTOR tokamak. Measurements were made several days after TEXTOR was boronised. Comparisons are made with results obtained in DITE under similar discharge conditions but in an unboronised machine. The measured charge state distributions are compared with simulations by the Monte Carlo impurity transport code LIM for carbon, boron, oxygen and injected neon impurities.

Almost all optical diagnostics systems on ITER will be based on in-vessel metallic first mirrors. The possible deterioration of their surface reflectivity as a result of erosion by charge-exchange neutrals and re-deposition of material eroded from the plas ...

This paper presents a short overview of current trends and progress in integrated ELM modelling. First, the concept of integrated ELM modelling is introduced, various interpretations of it are given and the need for it is discussed. Then follows an overvie ...

A detailed description of the Langmuir probe electronics upgrade for TCV (Tokamak a Configuration Variable) is presented. The number of amplifiers and corresponding electronics has been increased from 48 to 120 in order to simultaneously connect all of the ...

Carbon-13 labelled methane was injected into the outer divertor during a series of H-mode discharges on the last day of operations with the JET MkII-SRP divertor. Tiles from around the vessel were removed during the subsequent shutdown and surface deposits ...

If an ELM is a peeling of flux surfaces from the plasma, due to a broken separatrix, current density is lost as well as particles and energy. The fast loss of a current-carrying plasma layer modifies the plasma equilibrium, leading to sudden shifts in the ...

A tritium imaging plate technique (TIPT) in combination with an electron-probe microscopic analysis (EPMA) were applied to examine tritium (T) retention characteristics in individual dust particles collected in the Joint European Torus with the ITER-like W ...

in this paper, we present kinetic simulation results of plasma parallel transport in the stationary and ELMy scrape-off (SOL) layer. We demonstrate that number of kinetic factors describing SOL are strongly nonuniform and evolve during the ELM. Power loads ...
