Magnetic manipulation is a method used for biomedical applications to remotely control micro-robots in a contactless manner. The electromagnet manipulator should control a magnetic field with 3 degrees of freedom inside a region of interest. In various cas ...

Slotless windings are commonly used in small size high-speed electrical brushless dc machines. Unlike slotted windings, forced to follow the direction of slots, slotless windings can be freely arranged in the airgap. This represents several opportunities f ...

In order to create a new solar aircraft totally powered by the sun, a new method able to handle such a complex system must be developed. The project aim is to make a round-the-world flight in so as to promote the sustainable development. The aircraft power train will consist of solar cells placed on the wings, the energy storage system, the energy management electronics, the brushless DC motor and propellers. This paper presents the method to optimize the motor together with the propellers, to save the maxi

Magnetic bearings represent an important alternative to conventional ball bearings for applications that require very low noise and vibrations. The absence of contact and friction between rotor and stator parts, combined with the use of active vibration co ...

Low Urinary Tract Dysfunctions (LUTD) and in particular Urinary Incontinence (UI) is a medical condition affecting millions of people worldwide. In this context researchers and engineers performed tests on porcine and human urethras. However, ethical conce ...

With the ongoing journey of automation advancements and a trend towards miniaturization, the choice of actuator plays a crucial role. Over recent years, soft actuators have demonstrated their usefulness in various applications, especially where light weigh ...

The paper presents a methodology to determine the coefficient of the natural convection for the surface of a small electric motor. The theory of natural convection is applied to obtain analytical formulas, and the radiation is incorporated in the model. The measurements are performed on a simple motor model, a copper cylinder with a resistance inside acting as a heater. The obtained results match the theoretical predictions. © 2006 IEEE.

Touch-screens have become the most common way of interaction between humans and machines. Nevertheless, the lack of rich haptic-feedback on most of the devices limits the quality and effectivity of the interaction. To develop novel haptic feedback generati ...

Magnetically-levitated drives are compelling in applications where the long-lifetime operation or process chamber encapsulation is a requirement. To exploit these advantages, contactless position sensors are needed to estimate the position of the rotor. Of ...

The miniaturization of classical electromagnetic transformers raises certain problems such as manufacture both the coils and the magnetic core, increase in magnetic leak and especially electromagnetic pollution of the environment. One interesting solution consists of using a piezoelectric transformer (PT). In this paper a Rosen-type structure of PT has been chosen. the first approach consists of performing an analytical model. This approach is inspired by the technique used in electro-acoustics and allows b

A comparative study on the two different kinds of ultrasonic linear motors (ULM), standing and travelling wave types, is described. Analytical modeling using the wave theory and the contact mechanisms is presented. The former is used to describe the wave propagation in the stator, the latter to describe the interface between the slider and the stator, where the tangential and normal forces generated by the contact points allow the slider to describe a linear motion. FEM simulations allow to obtain transient

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have gained significant attention due to their potential in soft robotics and adaptive structures. However, their performance is often limited by their in-plane strain distribution and limited mechanical stability. We ...

We present an exact model for determining the cogging torque in a brushless DC (BLDC) motor. It is based on the conformal mapping (CM) method, by which the motor configuration is transformed to a configuration where the magnetic field can be determined. Then, by integrating the field over the stator surface, the cogging torque is determined. By varying some motor parameters, which is easy to do, an optimal configuration with the minimal cogging torque is obtained. We have confirmed the results by the finite

With the aim of providing a new touch sensation to the user, the design of innovative multi-finger haptic devices passes through the research for efficient and low-cost methods for position sensing. This paper thus addresses a novel self-sensing method for ...

Whenever something moves in the human body, our muscles do the work. However, while today it is part of everyday clinical practice to replace joints and bones with artificial parts, reconstruction medicine still has great difficulties finding a suitable replacement for damaged or destroyed muscles. There is one muscle in particular whose function is vital and is the subject of several studies, but without convincing results: the heart. Other muscles of the body actually share mechanical similarities with th

An ironless position sensor is a novel sensing structure which exhibits intrinsic immunity to external magnetic fields, since it is characterized by air-cored supply and sensing windings. This new solution may be of significant interest for applications wh ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) are recent type of smart materials, which transform electric energy into mechanical work. They show impressive performance as soft actuators. Capable of multidirectional actuation, large strain and high energy density, ...

We present an application of the conformal mapping (CM) method to determine the magnetic field and force in an electromechanical actuator. First, we show how to find, using a special type of CM known as the Schwarz-Christoffel mapping, the magnetic field in such a configuration. Then, we integrate the field in order to determine the force acting on the actuator moving part. The results are verified by a finite-element method.

Electromagnetic transformers have become obstacles to progress power supply miniaturization. Thus, piezoelectric transformers, which are more compact, immune to magnetic field and that present a high galvanic insulation, become more and more an alternative to electromagnetic transformers. In this paper, two different piezoelectric transformers have been studied and compared: a Rosen type and a radial mode type. The first approach consists in performing an analytical model. This approach is inspired by the t

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) stand out as versatile devices with promising applications. Their use has been proposed as artificial muscle implants, aiming to replace paralyzed facial muscles and restore the corresponding movements. By reinforcing DEAs with unidirectional fibres, substantial uniaxial deformations can be induced, resulting in previously reported strains up to 75% higher than isotropic DEAs. In this work, the control of the actuator is explored by investigating the dynamic electro-vis
