We aim at the elaboration of Information Systems able to optimize energy consumption in buildings while preserving human comfort. Our focus is in the use of state-based stochastic modeling applied to temporal signals acquired from heterogeneous sources such as distributed sensors, weather web services, calendar information and user triggered events. Our general scientic objectives are: (1) global instead of local optimization of building automation sub-systems (heating, ventilation, cooling, solar shadings,

This paper describes the development and application of a new unique tool to support designers to optimise the sustainability of urban neighbourhoods (SUNtool). In this the paper introduces (i) the software architecture, (ii) the integrated solver and rela ...

In our research we use the technology of electrochromic (EC) glazing to maximize the use of daylight and minimize the energy consumption in buildings while preserving visual and thermal comfort of the users. We propose an advanced automatic control of EC windows coupled with an anidolic daylighting system (ADS), blinds and dimmable fluorescent lights. EC windows with a visible transmittance range (Tv) of 0.15 – 0.50 were installed on the southern façade of an office room of the LESO experimental building (E

The consumption of resources within an urban neighbourhood depends on the behaviour of its occupants. To understand the randomness of this behaviour and its effect on the demand of resources calls for the development of a set of stochastic models which are ...

This work takes benefit from two advanced building technologies through the integration of an anidolic daylighting system and an electro-chromic glazing in a building facade for achieving an optimal control of the daylight flux entering in an office room. ...

The paper describes a predictive and adaptive heating controller, using artificial neural networks to allow the adaptation of the control model to the real conditions (climate, building characteristics, user's behaviour). The controller algorithm has been developed and tested as a collaborative project between the CSEM (Centre Suisse d'Electronique et de Microtechnique, Neuchâtel, Switzerland, project leader), and the LESO-PB (Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory, EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland). A sig

This paper describes how data collected during a continuously running data acquisition program on the LESO building in Lausanne, Switzerland, was used to measure the intermediate light switch probability by users as a function of current illuminance levels ...

A method is proposed to estimate objectively occupants' visual discomfort in small office rooms as a function of the illuminance at one or more locations. Expressed as a visual discomfort probability, it is based on an analysis of the past history of the u ...

A personalized measure for thermal comfort has been applied for use in combination with smart controls for building automation. Using data from a field study, we first show the superiority of personalized measures for thermal comfort compared to standard n ...

The goal of the project DELTA was to develop an optimal blind controller for a room or a building, taking into account the following factors: - optimisation of thermal comfort - optimisation of daylighting - minimisation of energy consumption - priority given to users' wishes

This paper presents the results of computational experiments where multi-objective algorithms were used to tune a controller for blind movements in a residential building and a room of the LESO (Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory) experimental bu ...

In this work, we investigated the interplay and the influence of lighting and blind control models on the heating, cooling, and lighting energy loads of an office room. By including different stochastic models for occupancy and appliances, we built a compl ...

In literature many different blind controller have been proposed and it has been shown in most cases, that they can provide energy savings and better comfort. In the early approaches they where based only on one state variable, but over time more variables ...

Data from multiple sensors and actuators has been recorded from December 2001 to March 2008 at the LESO-PB building of the EPFL campus, using the EIB/KNX bus standard. Sensors and actuators provided data on room temperature, presence, lighting level, windo ...

This paper describes an algorithm for the simulation of occupant presence, to be later used as an input for future occupant behaviour models within building simulation tools. By considering occupant presence as an inhomogeneous Markov chain interrupted by ...

In this paper we present results of computational experiments where multi-objective algorithms were used to tune a controller for blind movements in a room of the LESO experimental building. The blind controller which is based on fuzzy logic was optimized ...
