The design and operation of ITER experimental fusion reactor requires the development of neutron measurement techniques and numerical tools to derive the fusion power and the radiation field in the device and in the surrounding areas. Nuclear analyses prov ...

The total emission of radiation is a crucial quantity to calculate the power balances and to understand the physics of any Tokamak. Bolometric systems are the main tool to measure this important physical quantity through quite sophisticated tomographic inv ...

A systematic study of the power threshold for L-H transition has been conducted in TCV. Only results from NB heated plasmas are reported. The dependencies of PLH on plasma current, plasma density and main ion species have been investigated. For Deuterium&# ...

The intensity of Be-9 + p nuclear fusion reactions was experimentally studied during second harmonic (2 omega CH) ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) and further analyzed during fundamental hydrogen minority ICRH of JET-ILW hydrogen and deuterium plasma ...

Intense electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) are employed on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) both in second- and third-harmonic X-mode (X2 and X3). The plasma behaviour under such conditions is ...

L-mode to H-mode transitions (LH transitions) are obtained in a wide range of plasma parameters in TCV Ohmic discharges. LH transitions either occur directly, indicated by a single abrupt drop in D-alpha emission, or present an intermediate 'dithering' phase before the H-mode state is attained, in which D-alpha emission shows rapid excursions between L-mode and H-mode levels. The type of transition, with or without a dithering phase, depends on the plasma current and plasma triangularity. It is less sensiti

Compact DT neutron generators based on accelerators are often built on the principle of a mixed beam operation, meaning that deuterium (D) and tritium (T) are both present in the ion beam and in the target. Moreover, the beam consists of a mixture of ions ...

An effect due to fusion born triton production has been observed in JET high-performance deuterium plasma discharges with neutral beam injection (NBI) and H-minority ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) heating, using DD and deuterium tritium (DT) neu ...

Geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) may generate strong oscillations in the radial electric field and therefore are considered as a possible trigger mechanism for the L-H transition. This contribution focuses on the characterization of GAMs in JET plasmas when ...

Ohmic H-mode discharges in the Tokamak Configuration Variable (TCV) have recently been heated for the first time by electron cyclotron (EC) waves at the 3rd harmonic (X3) at full power. New edge localized mode (ELM) behaviour has been found, with larger am ...

In TCV, L-mode to H-mode transitions have been observed in a wide variety of plasma configurations. Two statistical methods, discriminant analysis and a nonlinear system identification, have been used to localize the boundary between the L-mode and H-mode domains in the multidimensional operational space. For control purposes, an estimate of the shortest distance between the actual position in the operational domain and the boundary is defined, and the parameters to modify in order to reach the transition a

The unique flexibility of TCV in plasma shaping has been exploited to address different aspects of tokamak physics in which the plasma shape may play a role. This paper summarizes the experiments undertaken in the TCV tokamak ("Tokamak à Configuration Variable") over the last decade in stability and transport and offers a comprehensive and integrated view of the various effects of plasma shape observed. For each of these effects, the relation between experimental results and theoretical predictions is stres

Starting from a standard single null X-point configuration, a second order null divertor (snowflake (SF)) has been successfully created on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) tokamak. The magnetic properties of this innovative configuration have been analysed and compared with a standard X-point configuration. For the SF divertor, the connection length and the flux expansion close to the separatrix exceed those of the standard X-point by more than a factor of 2. The magnetic shear in the plasma edge

A new compact gamma-ray spectrometer was developed in order to optimise the measurement of bremsstrahlung radiation emitted from runaway electrons in the MeV range. The detector is based on a cerium doped lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) scintil ...

The International Global H-mode Threshold Database has been revised and cleaned from inadequate data for some tokamaks. This significantly reduces the scatter for the corresponding datasets. The resulting new analyses including all ten tokamaks yields results comparable to previous work. In this case, the uncertainties are essentially determined by the inability of the linear models to take the different dependencies into account with sufficient accuracy. However, restricting the database to a more homogene

Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) are routinely seen in present-day tokamaks and stellarators with energetic particles and they represent an attractive form of MHD spectroscopy that provides valuable information on background plasma and on the energetic particles. P ...

The 1MW power of the neutral beam injector (NBI) enters the plasma of the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) through a duct. The original beam propagation model predicted a maximal heat flux on the internal faces of the duct below 350 kW/m(2), leading ...

The kinetic code for plasma periphery (KIPP) was used to assess the importance of the kinetic effects of parallel electron transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and divertor of JET high radiative H-mode inter-ELM plasma conditions with the ITER-like wall ...

Fast ions have recently been found to significantly impact and partially suppress plasma turbulence both in experimental and numerical studies in a number of scenarios. Understanding the underlying physics and identifying the range of their beneficial effe ...

The paper is dedicated to the characterisation of multi-strap ICRH antenna coupling to plasma. Relevance of traditional concept of coupling resistance to antennas with mutually coupled straps is revised and the importance of antenna port excitation consist ...
