The skin wrinkling phenomenon was investigated in the case of ultra-light sandwich structures with a honeycomb core manufactured by one-shot vacuum bag processing. The interplay between process pressure and compressive strength of the skin was established. ...

Magnetite nanoparticles are synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(acac)(3) and subsequently coated with a silica shell exploiting a water-in-oil synthetic procedure. The as-produced nanopowder is mixed with a photocurable hyperbranched resin and the p ...

The influence of temperature and moisture activity on the viscoelastic behavior of fluorinated membranes for fuel cell applications was investigated. Uncrosslinked and crosslinked ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE)-based proton-conducting membranes were p ...

The aim of this study is to develop coatings on polymer substrates with a combined increase in oxygen barrier performance and toughness, based on SiOx coatings modified with multifunctional organo-silane polymers of controlled polarity and reactivity. As a ...

Determination of fracture parameters for brittle coatings with a sub-micron thickness is not a straightforward task. Since direct evaluation through testing with for instance a double cantilever beam or compact tension tests is hardly applicable due to the ...

Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) was used to deposit SiOx thin films of varying thicknesses on parylene C substrates, using hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as a precursor. The microstructure of SiOx coatings was analyzed using X-ray photoemis ...

A simple and reliable method to measure the adhesion of thin, hard coatings on polymer substrates is presented, based on the rupture mechanics of brittle films on ductile substrates. The regular fragmentation pattern of the coating obtained after straining specimens under uniaxial tension is analyzed through a classical shear-lag analysis at the coating/substrate interface. The model links the mean crack spacing measured on strained specimens to the interfacial shear strength and the reversible adhesion ene

Nano-scale patterns were produced with UV-curable acrylated hyperbranched polymer nanocomposites using nanoimprint lithography with a glass master in a rapid, low-pressure process. The pattern of the glass master was replicated with composites containing up to 25 vol% SiO2 with a shape fidelity better than 98%. Photo-rheology, interferometry and atomic force microscopy were used to analyze the material behavior. Attention was paid to the relationship between composition, nanoparticle dispersion, kinetics of

The equilibrium rheological properties of a range of isotropic exfoliated and intercalated hyperbranched polymer (HBP)/montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanocomposites have been investigated using low strain oscillating shear measurements at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of the HBP. Predominantly exfoliated nanocomposites showed a sharp increase in shear viscosity at about 0.8 wt % MMT, associated with a transition from Newtonian to solid-like behavior, which was characterized in terms of a l

The present invention concerns a dual cure composition comprising a radiation curable polymer precursor, solid particles, an organometallic precursor and a coupling agent, a hybrid organic/inorganic nanocomposite material produced using said dual cure comp ...

The interface toughness of a thin coating/compliant substrate system is estimated based on the evolution of coating buckle patterns in the fragmentation test. The linear density of coating buckles as a function of applied strain is determined experimentall ...

A facile in situ and UV printing process was demonstrated to create self-cleaning synthetic replica of natural petals and leaves. The process relied on the spontaneous migration of a fluorinated acrylate surfactant (PFUA) within a low-shrinkage acrylated h ...

Crack patterns of 100-nm-thick silicon oxide coating on polypropylene film subjected to equibiaxial stress loading are studied experimentally. The loading is achieved by means of a bulging cell mounted under an optical microscope with stepwise pressurizati ...

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) can be produced in the form of thin, transparent and flexible films. However, the permeability of such materials to oxygen and water vapor is very sensitive to moisture, which limits their potential for a variety of packaging an ...

This paper reports the impressive mechanical properties of 1 μm thick carbon-containing SiOx gas barrier coatings, characterised using the uniaxial fragmentation test. Such coatings have been found to act as excellent barriers to water vapour permeation pa ...

The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between nickel-titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloy wires, characterized by a nonlinear stress-strain behavior, and epoxy matrix was determined by pull-out tests. Tests were carried out at several temperatures and levels ...

From the experimental analysis of the photocuring process in terms of reaction kinetics as well as modulus and shrinkage build-up, the residual stresses arising during the photopolymerization of functionally graded composite coatings based on an acrylate m ...

Photoresponsive soft liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) transform light's energy into dynamic shape changes and are considered promising candidates for production of soft robotic or muscle-like devices. 3D printing allows access to elaborated geometries ...

The present work investigates the saturation damage state of a two-layer coating on a substrate (layer 1/layer 2/substrate) under uniaxial tensile loading in order to derive expressions for the interfacial strength between layer 1 and layer 2, and between ...

The crack onset strain (COS) of 4-level thin film transistor (TFT) devices on both steel foils and thin polyimide (PI) films was investigated using tensile experiments carried out in situ in an optical microscope. Cracks initiated first within the SiO2 ins ...
